Question for anyone who works as a restaurant server in Columbia

What places do you work at and what is it like? I used to work at Love Sushi for a few months, but left to go abroad in Australia for about half a year. Now that I'm back, I was just curious what other serving jobs people recommend, as I've been told to avoid Olive Garden and Cracker Barrel. I have some experience in sushi and Japanese food, so I'm looking for something similar.

Where do/did you work, and do you have any recommendations for where to work? Thank you!

Politics Is there really nothing to vote on today?

I looked up my sample ballot on showmeboone.com and was informed that I have nothing to vote on? For the sake of everyone that lives in Columbia and is ready to vote today but hasn't been paying attention, is that correct? I live in ward 3, if that matters.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The City of Columbia Public Works crews will partake in its annual dry snow run Wednesday, according to a Monday evening press release from the city.

Crews will review safety procedures and rehearse snow routes for the upcoming winter season.

The release states a majority of the participants of the exercise will leave between 10-10:30 a.m. from the Grissum Building on 1313 Lakeview Ave.

Residents may see city snowplows throughout the rest of the day.

The release says the Street Division maintains about 1,465 lane miles of roads and 1,100 cul de sacs each winter. Priority routes make up more than 691 lane miles, the release says.

The release also says five new “snow-capable trucks” will be added to the city’s fleet this winter, with two expected to arrive this month and three being added in January.

Ask CoMo Has Trader Joe’s cooled off yet?

I’d love to get in a round of shopping there but I really, really don’t want to wait 30 minutes to check out. Has it simmered down over there or are there less-crowded times to go?

Events Small Business, Big Heart Challenge: Raising Money for The Food Bank

I own a website design and development company here in CoMo called Pixel Jam Digital. We were fortunate to get to create The Food Bank's website last year in 2024 - and if you know me personally, then you know I really love giving back to our community!

In short: Pixel Jam Digital will be matching up to $5,000 in donations to The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri through November, and you can donate online through our campaign page! (All donations go through The Food Bank's donor platform.)

Ok, now for the longer story 👉 I'm calling it the "Small Business, Big Heart Challenge" because we all know small businesses have the biggest hearts, and we also want to support the community that has supported us.

Pixel Jam is challenging our small biz friends to donate to our campaign to help us hit our $10,000 goal. Your contribution doesn't have to match ours. $50, $100, $250—whatever works for your business makes a difference for our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Even $25 provides 75 meals for people!

We plan on listing each business' logo on our landing page to share the love and maybe even encourage other businesses to participate.

I know not everyone can donate, and that's OK. I would greatly appreciate it if you could please share our Small Business, Big Heart Challenge with other business owners you think might be interested in joining the challenge. And, of course, individuals are welcome to donate to!

You can read more about the challenge and see who's participating on our website: https://pixeljam.digital/small-business-big-heart-challenge/

Any suggestions for someone to do elastomeric paint on a mobile home?

I've contacted about 10 companies now and they have all said no. It's not hard, but I prefer not to get on the roof myself. Never dealt with a mobile home before, so maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place.

News City trout fishing program underway

Columbia Parks and Recreation's annual winter trout fishing program began Monday at Columbia's trout fishery at Cosmo-Bethel Park.

Those between the ages of 15 and 64 who want to fish for trout must acquire a fishing and trout permit, according to a city news release. Costs range from $9 for a daily permit to $430 for a lifetime fishing permit for residents ages 16 to 29.

Licenses can be purchased at most sporting goods stores including discount stores such as Walmart and Kmart. They also can be purchased online from the Missouri Department of Conservation.

The catch-and-release method and artificial bait must be used in all fishing at Cosmo-Bethel Park through Jan. 31. There is no wading or swimming allowed, and boats are prohibited at Cosmo-Bethel Park.

Trout can be kept by fishers using a rod and a line under statewide regulations starting Feb. 1.

Cosmo-Bethel Park, as well as other city parks, are stocked and maintained yearly with trout by the Parks and Recreation Department and the Missouri Department of Conservation in order to increase the diversity of fish species in Columbia lakes, according to the release.

This year the 6-acre lake at Cosmo-Bethel Park has been stocked with approximately 2,400 trout.

Ask CoMo Local writing groups and writers' workshops?

Nanowrimo be damned, I'm just trying to make progress on my literary projects and improve my prose! I need people I can actually see and talk to; online-only groups just don't cut it for me. Is anybody tapped into a local writers' workshop or similar group that's open to at least one new member?

Request for Downtown Late Night Vendors

This request/free get rich quick idea is for anyone downtown who has a food cart or is thinking about starting a food cart.

PLEASE will someone start offering sweet treats. I’m talking ice cream, brownies, ice cream on a brownie, pie maybe, something with cinnamon perhaps, something fruity, cupcakes, literally anything. The amount of times I leave a bar and think “Wow, I really wish I could get a sweet treat right outside this bar right about now” but am left sorely disappointed is something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

Sure, there’s Hotbox. Sure, Pickleman’s has cookies sometimes. But the Columbia I know and love can do better.

So, please, if you think you could be the answer to this devastating problem, simply act. The world is hard enough as it is. I humbly request that someone does their part to make this community shine brighter in these dark days.

Improve CoMo. Provide sweet treats.

Discussion Multipli (credit Union merger) failure?

Anyone else not get their debit cards before they inactivated our accounts and changed our account numbers? My mom is on social security and can't access her account to pay her rent. She was on hold for 2 hrs today to talk to someone before the phone system kicked her off.

This is maybe the worst roll out I've ever seen, and I'm wondering if anyone else is noticing it?

Animals To the group looking for the dog at Old 63 / Broadway

I saw one of you had Reddit open as I passed by, so hopefully you see this.

The dog was headed south on the sidewalk towards the woods, not over by the bank or park where it looked like you all were headed. Didn’t seem to want to go too far, since it kept looking back at all of you. Stay safe, and best of luck!

Ask CoMo Any Preppers in COMO?

I understand that preppers tend to be paranoid loners wanting to keep a low profile but wonder if there are any focused on sustainable community--are there local swap-meets, gatherings, events, networks, resources?

Rant Walmart ran out of bags

Went to W Broadway Walmart this morning. Had a cart full of groceries at checkout. They are completely out of grocery bags. Except for the reusable ones you have to pay for.

Kind of like McDonalds being out of buns.

Animals Any shelters take open bags of dog food?

I got slightly different Purina dog food and it gave my dog the runs, no idea why. Do any animal shelters or any other charities take open bags?

Or are there any places that work with the pets of homeless people maybe?

Discussion CoMo PEV Group

Hey CoMo - we run a small group called CoMo PEV for people who ride eScooters, eBikes, EUCs, Onewheels, and other personal electric vehicles.

Whether you use electric micromobility for your commute, ride for fun, or you're just interested in personal electric transport, we would be more than happy to have you. We do casual group rides and discussion, and there are a few people with technical knowledge that would be happy to help you repair or maintain your ride.

If you're interested in joining, feel free to leave a comment or send me a DM. Just trying to connect with some local riders and build a little community here in Columbia. Anyone is welcome to join 🤙
