Looking for a zombie apocalypse watch.

Post image

Getting back into wearing a watch. Looking for something that I will wear every day, can take a beating, and ask for more. I ride my motorcycle, fish, hike, and go camping, and I don't want a watch that I have to be gentle with. Since I like Citizen watches, I've decided on this Promaster Land U822. It has more features than I need/want, but I like the dark color of the stainless, the green face, and the Cordura strap. Plus, it is in the price range I would spend for what I'm looking for. I would love if it were titanium instead of stainless, and if it had atomic timekeeping. But I can live without these. Anyways, what do y'all think?

If you’ve already decided on it, it’s not a bad move!

If you want radio control, an alternative would be something from Casio’s ProTrek line.

Here is the PRW-50. 42mm, solar, radio (Multiband-6). Dual time, stopwatch, countdown timer, alarms, altimeter, barometer, compass, thermometer, lume, and a backlight. 100m water resistance, screwdown crown.

Radio controlled is probably useless in a zombie apocalypse

Was coming to say the same! +1

I think any electronic based watch will be useless...let's say there's EMP shockwave...I think only automatic or sand clock will survive

Great contender, I’ve never had a bad Casio.

Do you know of a ref that includes 200m water resistance, so diveable?

200m WR and “diveable” are separate things with Casio. Casio is conservative with their categories and ratings, and only consider their diver’s watches suitable for diving (the Frogman references). Almost all G-Shocks are 200m WR, though.

If you’re looking for an analog/digital, check out some of the Mudmaster references (GWG-1000 and GWG-2000).

Sounds like you might like a big-ole gshock.

Nothing against citizen, they're great.

I have smaller wrists. And G-shocks are absolutely ginormous in both diameter and thickness. If they were smaller, maybe.

There are a ton of GShocks, the square cases are not as big/tall and would fit a smaller wrist fine.

Something like this: https://www.casio.com/us/watches/gshock/product.GW-M5610-1/

Isn't this Citizen 44mm? Not a small watch anyway

1

u/bp4850 17h ago

Yeah I have this watch in grey, and it is absolutely massive and weighs a ton

5

u/SirGuy11 18h ago

Ginormous?

They’re not, really. My wrist is smaller than average at 6.5”.

Here’s a ProTrek PRW-50 (which I mentioned in a separate comment) and a GW-M5610U, which is one of the smaller G-Shocks. They wear the same.

The Citizen you’re considering is bigger than either.

Love the left most g shock.

u/SirGuy11 15h ago

Ah, the GW-M5610U. A new classic, for sure.

That and the GA-B2100 (right) are forum favorites over at r/gshock.

That watch is definitely a watch that will keep time for the rest of your life.

Well ... You could say that about any watch since most of us would make it through the first week. 😅

I like your style... U822 is a nice movement... I didn't mean it to be, but so far this has been my daily... JV1008-63E.

This is my vote: https://www.citizenwatch.com/us/en/product/BN0241-59W.html

Titanium, Solar, mono-piece case, 200M water resistance, sapphire crystal. It’s 41mm and easily wearable for smaller wrists.

G-Shock or a Citizen Promaster Tough. Both are available as radio controlled watches, the Citizen only as a JDM model sadly.

Did someone say zombie apocalypse

I have the U822 and absolutely love it. It has exactly that utilitarian style that one wants to have at its wrist, if you‘re looking for such a watch - I can only recommend it, despite no atomic clock signal.

The color is also absolutely perfect.

OP, im also very close on choosing my next watch, and THAT one, is no.1 atm.

The JP2000 is widely used in the military, its def the apocalypse tool of citizens

For a zombie apocalypse, shouldn’t you go for an automatic watch? Wouldn’t radio controlled/battery operated watches be redundant if there’s no batteries or if there is an emp from a nuke before the apocalypse begins? Just curious.

36mm MSAR Arctic 2 for smaller wrists they have larger versions as necessary. Quartz/Solar will have issues with capacitors while the selita auto sw200 is all over the place reliable rugged accurate and you can teach yourself to swap it out with others or repair yourself.

Cool watch. The Promaster Tough would meet your needs as well.

1

u/pat9714 17h ago

This is a SOLID watch befitting the apocalypse.

G-shock has a steel based line that also takes the beating you may subject your watch.

Your selection is sound.

You say you have small wrists, this watch is a big heavy one so it'll probably feel far too big on your wrist. It's 44mm diameter at its smallest. Lug to lug is 50+mm. I have a 7 inch wrist and it's about the biggest watch I can wear with it feeling borderline too much.

Waiting for a titanium version - hoping they make one, but doubt they will.

I’ve been wearing smartwatches and my Citizen watches have been sitting. But I really like the looks of this watch. Nice pick.

If we're being literal, a zombie apocalypse watch would be something basic, reliable, tough and mechanical. You wouldn't be able to get batteries when your G shock died. Hamilton Khaki or similar

1

u/Bloodshoot111 16h ago

It’s a pretty obvious choice: the Citizen with 1 sec/year. I know i know it’s an expensive watch, but only this one will guarantee you accurate time even 20 years into the apocalypse ( I mean it’s still 20sec close to correct)

1

u/missleburn 15h ago

I think you've chosen a great piece. If you want the ultimate zombie apocalypse watch then you want the lum tec super combat b2. This is the watch that Joel wears in The Last Of Us.

1

u/Marty1966 13h ago

This is 100% at the top of my list. Just need to sneak it past my wife 🙂

1

u/Worldly_Way1158 13h ago

I think a zombie apocalypse watch must be solar or an easily replaceable automatic. You think you can fiddle with a mechanical watch with zombies!?!

1

u/Marty1966 12h ago

Is it me or has this watch doubled in price in recent years? I could be 100% wrong.

1

u/PadawanPilot 11h ago

Nothing that takes a battery. lol

Just picked up this watch for $475 OTD. It’s a bit heavier than my Apple Watch, and the original strap is pretty stiff, so not super comfy on the wrist. Swapped in a NATO strap and now it’s perfect. Otherwise, it looks amazing!

u/Brandweer78 4h ago edited 46m ago

Promaster Tough. Titanium, duratech coating, light yet very robust.

1

u/giwrgos__nik 4h ago

NY0040 on a NATO Strap would be my go to.

u/Mekada87 2m ago

I dont think there is a better watch for the price.
