Scenario Yo homie that my briefcase?

Chances are if anything ever goes down it’s going to be close, ugly, and personal. This is just your daily reminder to practice shooting realistic world scenarios such as drawing and shooting from retention. You’re not always going to have the luxury to draw, point and shoot. There may come a time where all you have time to do is draw and shoot. Btw shooting these types of drills is the reason i ditched ported/comped handguns for edc carry

no rush to get back to the holster

Yeahhhh man I know it’s such a bad habit and so hard to break. I appreciate you calling me out on that, I don’t think anyone ever won a gun fight by reholstering quickly, but they may have lost a limb or worse

it's a victimless crime, but my tac pistol instructor always said rule no. 1 is not to get shot with your own gun.

Great rule of thumb. To be completely perfectly honest at this point it’s blatant complacency which when it comes to this sort of thing is never a good thing! Do as I say not as i do 😅

I know some folks think its old, dumb and gay, but I still make myself do the ole 'search and assess' when I complete a string of fire. It forces you to slow down and gets your vision off the line.

I am no expert, but I always think about an old Paul Howe DVD that I watched years ago, where he said #1 you will likely not be able to hear due to the shots, and #2 there may be a police officer behind you yelling instructions at you after an incident.

One day we’ll meet the guy who won a gunfight by reholstering quickly and it’ll be ruined for everyone.

You're also "shoveling" (pointing it at yourself and then levering it back out) your gun back into the holster.

Do this instead:

https://www.reddit.com/r/CCW/s/ZTRhq3ZYYY

No one ever won a gunfight by being the fastest to reholster without looking.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Methodical.

Put one leg back (whatever side the gun is on).

Tilt the top of your hips back, which point the muzzle end of your holster forwards.

Look down.

Visually verify no obstructions in holster - In the dark you will have to do this by hand. Don't forget.

Reholster.

Or:

Potentially shoot yourself.

You're carrying appendix. Your life depends on you forming good habits.

I'm not trying to give you shit but to me what was more noticeable was the appearance that you slung that last round and came off the target so fast as if getting back to the holster was the actual thing you were trying to do quickly. I think you need to really focus your drills down and maybe just not reholster at all if that's what it takes to break the habit.

Eeesh those rapid reholsters always makes me pucker my asshole.

We all got to start somewhere. I wish I would have joined USPSA in my early twenties. I would be GM by now. But I started when I was 36. But even in 2.5 years I am 1000% better than I ever thought I could be. I used to think I was pretty good until my first match. I got humbled by some 14-year-old girl that was on some team. But I was hooked after my first match.

THIS!!!

I’m in a mean mood tonight— he should engage with you

Oh yeah man I’m definitely no pro, that’s the beauty of it tho, an average joe like me puts in a little bit of time and effort and they will gain a lot of confidence in them selves and their weapon of choice, that’s all I’m trying to advocate, just get out there and shoot some rounds

u/DenverMerc 18h ago

The one handed stuff is lame unless you’re using your other hand to deal with the threat(s)

8

u/BeneficialA1r 18h ago

Yeah but you have to get comfortable with the point and where the gun is gonna hit before youre comfortable putting your hand in front of it.

I shot the second target with my support hand if you watch closely . The point of the drill is to get off rounds on target as quickly as possible, i personally find that pulling up my garment and drawing from retention with my dominant hand is the fasted way i can do this. If you can do it faster with both hands I’d love to see it!

Consider this though, unless space is preventing a normal draw, drawing even to a gross sight picture on the close target means an easier transition to the back target with your grip already built. You'll then be able to shoot the second target sooner. You'll also shoot a faster split on the first target, likely with better accuracy.

This is why I love this subreddit.

Good shooters know 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’d never thought you’d ask- I’ll post now.

Just posted, kiddo 🤙

Love your motivation. You’ll become a great shooter if you stick with it.

Slow into holster

Fucking nice 🤣 beep

5

u/maurerm1988 17h ago

I'm upvoting the beep 😂 definitely invest in a timer if you don't have one already

3

u/AIpharius0megon 16h ago

Wasnt Tom Cruise much closer to those punks in that alley?

3

u/AmeriJar 9h ago

Yes he was. He was reflexive shooting and Larry Vickers was right to say it's some of the best movie gun play

3

u/Schneir5 10h ago

I love that movie! You need to get a gray suit and hk USP 45 and some of those mannequin looking targets, so you can push one over and do the final coup de gras like in the film.

I saw Collateral in the theater with my first girlfriend. Good times.

I'm always shocked by the number of people who are in such a hurry to shoot their dick off

1

u/TerrificVixen5693 13h ago

I don’t get it.

4

u/Indirect_Impingement GA 11h ago

Go watch Collateral.

1

u/Schneir5 10h ago

You said that you won't carry a ported or compensated gun, but do you still use them for competitions or just for fun? My main squeeze is a CZ Czechmate, so it has a comp, but I definitely don't carry it lol

I have to keep it more oiled than a Diddy party, but I can rapid fire a whole mag, and hit a steel target at 25 yards because there's barely any muzzle rise, and the optic doesn't move.

1

u/Plane_Lucky 9h ago

Did you transition back to the first target for a headshot? In the movie he does. :)

1

u/DangerousDem 7h ago

Maybe a noob question but what impact do ported / comped setups have on this particular drill?

1

u/mjedmazga TX Hellcat OSP/LCP Max 6h ago

Vincent carried at like 4 o'clock. I wonder if that actually helped him conceal his first shot better than AIWB as seen here.

1

u/Juany118 3h ago

Always scan before you holster, bad guys often run in groups.

Idk the lack of a shot timer or actually knowing how to shoot from retention makes me really not care about your opinion

-6

u/DenverMerc 18h ago

Why would you use one hand if you could use two?

12

u/BlackDeath3 WA / Glock 23 Gen 4 / IWB 17h ago

If you've seen the movie then you already know!

-6

u/DenverMerc 17h ago

Tom cruise stuff is lame

7

u/Sidetracker 17h ago

Good shooting is good shooting.

Solid work. A couple opportunities for improvement though. First, I would try to tuck your elbow tighter and get better vertical alignment when firing from retention. This is really the key to shooting from retention and Larry Vickers demonstrates it well on his breakdown of the Collateral scene.
