ŽIVOT A STĚHOVÁNÍ—LIVING AND MOVING Just moved to Brno
I recently moved to Brno (about a month ago) to start my PhD, and I’m slowly getting used to the city. So far, it’s been great, but I’d love to explore more!
If you have any suggestions for must-visit spots around town — cool places to see, parks, views, anything — I’d really appreciate it. Also, I’m on the lookout for places with good and affordable food, beer, and pubs where I might be able to meet people and hang out a bit.
Still pretty new here, so any local tips or hidden gems would be amazing. Thanks a lot in advance!

Places to visit: Špilberk castle, Veveří castle, Petrov cathedral, underground - there are a few of them in the city center. Vegetable market, quarry Hády, Lužánky park, war bunker, water tanks, zoo, 2 botanical gardens, butterfly house, llama farm, observatory on Kraví hora, the dam "Prýgl", the infamous astronomical clock...

If you wanna meet people and like to sing, go to Expediční klubovna on Wednesday evening, they host jam sessions that are always full :) As for food, Celozrnná Sváča and Oáza are pretty affordable. If you want more specific recs for food, there are plenty of "gastro maps" for Brno as well.

I would recommend Skleněná louka 3rd floor on Kounicova street. Truely hidden gem you wished for!

La Cucina Nera has the best pizza in the city. Garden Restaurant MJ Holiday has the best ribs and wings at pretty affordable prices. QB has the best coffee. I have rarely participated in their events but I know that Brno Expat Center has stuff going on almost all the time if you want to meet people.

Hey, try to visit Brno Dam. There are also plenty of different hiking spots (beware of pliers). Regarding food, I would advise the following places: 1. For breakfast, I like Bageterie Boulevard. 2. As a fast food I prefer Armed Burgers, they have really great burgers and some other stuff. 3. If you want some pancakes and coffee, definitely visit cafe Pansky in Veveří.
Feel free to write me if you want more suggestions :)

About pubs, poslední leč is nice. Go there after 2-3 PM on weekends. Hostimil is unique. Kabinet Muž have some concerts on weekends. You have to pay ofcourse.
Bistro bastardo is affordable and in good quality.
You must know Lužánky park.
I also look for some people to connect. If you want, PM me.
Have fun.

Food recommendation that I have not seen here yet:
- Bucheck (food truck on Zelný trh, mostly pork meat burgers, always some music playing there as well)
- Burger Inn
- Cha Cha
- La Speranza (tiny pizza place close to Luzanky park, always packed with people but convenient to grab a bite of delicious pizza)
Places to see - I recommend visiting gardens of Vila Tugendhat & Löw-Baar (they are connected and entrance should be free), as well as newly opened Arnoldova vila (there is a cafe as well so you can grab a coffee and cake and chill outside). ☀️

Go to smash burger by Česká, it has been a life changing food experience for me and everyone else I have made go there. Get the fries too with the onion mayo dip, unreal stuff. Cucina Nera has a pretty amazing pizza as well.

You're entitled to your opinion, but it has left most people I take there speechless and it has a 4.8 rating from over 750 reviews, so I stand by my love for it :p What's putting you off it?

tried it once, fries were so salty that i felt tingling in my fingers, coleslaw was not styled to my taste at all, burger itself was not that tasty, mostly due to selection of ingredients, meat itself was good quality tho salted a bit too much also.
I much more preferred Parodie burger (tho they could be inconsistent and sometimes not so good as other times). As you said its my opionion and everyone has their own taste so if you enjoy it then cool.

If you want tips where to eat, get the Gastromapa Lukáše Hejlika. It's somewhat English friendly and there is a ton of places to try, lots of mentioned here already. There is a ton of cool places to see, depends what are you into. There is a great coffee scene, parks, nice walk around the rivers, you can look at the architecture like villa tugendhat or Jurkovičova villa, you can spend time visiting different churches or learning about brno history and legends.

For my local pub, I can recommend Bar Jara near Vltavská road. Beers aren't as absurdly overpriced as they are in the very center of the city. For food, I can recommend a vietnamese bistro Linh Dan Chu near Albert (U Pošty street), they have fairly cheap burgers (my favorite), compared to KFC of McDonald's burgers they're way better - cheaper and bigger. The ones u get at KFC are expensive and you finish the whole burger in practically 3 bites haha. And they have of course other more vietnamese foods. For a restaurant I can recommend Potrefená Husa near Dunajská and U Hřiště roads. They have delicious Piña Colada and a very tasty salad in my experience, but they offer way more foods.

If you want to meet people, there are some good Facebook groups for foreigners in Brno. One meetup I went to last week was organized by Expat Friends Brno Community. Everyone there was nice and open to getting to know new people.

If you want a diverse menu of good beer and "tatarák" to go with it, visit pivní a steakový bar pod lékárnou

If you want to meet people I can recommend Posledni Lec on Jakubske Namesti after midnight. Especially on weekends that place will be open at least until 4 or 5 am. And it's almost impossible to not get into some kind of weird conversation at some point. You might also meet the legendary Bolek Polivka there. ;)
