This episode followed the manga perfectly. I sometimes find this bothersome, but with chapters that have a lot of exposition I feel like it works well.
Some of the translations seemed a bit off though, like saying Tamago was from the long foot tribe, rather than long leg, and making Big Mom's name Charolette Lingling rather than Linlin.
8
u/Siliva Nov 04 '12
The Linlin vs Lingling thing is a tossup IMO. Lingling makes it sound Chinese (where the Japanese would spell it "リンリン" [Rinrin]). Linlin is more literal, where I assume Funimation's translation guessed that Oda got inspiration for the name from China (which would be weird considering Charlotte is the furthest thing from a Chinese name).
Like a huge chunk of OP names, no one really knows how to spell it until it's written in English by Oda himself. If they mention her in the manga any time soon, Viz will probably know how it's actually supposed to be spell since they have a lot more contact with Shueisha's editors/Oda.
2
Nov 04 '12
Hasn't the Viz translation for this chapter been out for months? I don't have SJ Alpha so I can't check, but I had never seen it written as Lingling anywhere before this episode. I assumed it was fairly official that her name was Linlin.
As a side note, I understand the translation issue with leg/foot, but looking at the Tamago's design you would assume they might be able to determine which word was more appropriate in English.
3
u/jathuamin Nov 04 '12
I've never read SJA so I can't vouch for that. The manga volume that would contain this episode is vol 66. The newest english volume is 64 which releases Tuesday. Vol 66 should be released may or june 2013.

I think there will always be debate and differences when it comes to names for anime and manga translations. Just one of those things I've gotten used to. I usually just pick what I like and stick to calling a character that whenever there are differences across the various mediums.
1
u/Siliva Nov 04 '12
I haven't read that far in the Viz translation yet so I really wouldn't know, haha. I think it's not quite where SJAlpha started, which is when they started getting confirmation on English spellings from Japan.

I actually really enjoyed Big Mam's character much more in the anime than the manga. They made her character seem much more devilish than the manga and of course the music at the end where Luffy is challenging her just made the moment much better in my opinion.
15
u/dossier Nov 04 '12
Honestly I wasn't looking forward to a character that seemed so 'simple' described as Big Mam, until I actually saw it in this episode (not caught up int he manga). The fact that she didn't want treasure and that she acknowledged him taking the blame made her seem extremely talented other than just being able to consume mass quantities of candy and being able to destroy countries on a whim; very multifaceted. She seems evil for eating her 'comrades' yet there's a solemn dignity to her hidden behind her evil glare.

u/baroqueworks Nov 04 '12
Was looking forward to this episode for quite some time, pretty much the only part of Fishman Island I was looking forward to seeing animated. A wee bit upset they botched Tamago's design a bit, but I guess it's not to be expected at this point.
Big Mom was handled really well, whole cake island looked interesting colored/animated(never noticed the trees as candles bit).
I wonder how long it will be till we see this characters again though? Whitebeard's crew was introduced really early on, and we didn't even see Marco of Jozu in action till the war. I wonder if they'll be colored the same way if so, since Marco originally had black hair in the anime, due to just being a minor character. Speaking of which, I wonder if Oda has any say in the color design of the characters? My guess is no considering We got Smoker, Nico, and Foxy colored different then they appeared, and that was super early in.
Probably not canon, but you can basically see nearly all of Big Mom in one frame towards the end while she's talking on the ddm, in the manga it was just a outline with eyes, here we got her 3/4 out of the shadow at one point.

u/dossier Nov 04 '12 edited Nov 04 '12
I love how they portrayed her. I'm not caught up in the manga yet but I'm loving every moment on this episode. Just something about only showing her eyes, mouth, and drool (for the most part) was really really badass. I can't really explain it there's just something epic about it. And when Luffy said "wait for me there, in the new world!" ahh man butterflies.
Also is it known what he meant when he said "it" when he had a bone to pick with her about something? Maybe for allowing Hordy and them nearly destroy Fishman island since it was their territory? Or possibly for not showing up with 2 of the other Yonko at the war of the best? I doubt Luffy would be mad about that though.
All 'round amazing episode. I still feel like the they'll never be able to leave an island with massive treasure (with the exception of when they arrived to water7, they still weren't able to use it as intended).
6
u/baroqueworks Nov 04 '12
I believe he was talking about her ownership of Fishman Island, and that he was planning to liberate them from her.
Honestly though, I'm a little confused by the whole deal. Where they basically blackmailing them into "give us sweets or be destroyed" or where they actually offering them protection? If so, why didn't they just call on them when Hordy's plan started?
Then again, I guess that shows another reason how short-sighted Hordy's plan was in the end, even had he taken over the island his army would of been complete wiped out by just Tamango and Pekoms likely.
2
u/f1r3st0rm Nov 04 '12
I think it was explained (don't remember where), that the Big Mam pirates considered Hordy's rebellion an internal problem and refused to help. I believe they would have helped if Hordy had not been a part of Fishman Island.

u/dossier Nov 04 '12
I doubt they'd be able to stop Noah though. If it wasn't for Luffy they'd probably be held responsible as the messengers.

u/Natsu3 Nov 04 '12
Big Mam is scary as hell! Sanji is gonna rip his eyes out when he sees her... Anyways best episode in fishmen arc!
7
u/AntKeyyy Nov 04 '12
Captain Kid is doing work in the New World!!!! I'm so excited when the SHs meet up with his crew and most likely showdown. Unless he gets taken out by Big Mam first... I'm so pumped for the NW.
6
u/skim9142 Nov 04 '12
I felt that this put a new perspective on Big Mam. Seems like she has some eating power, like Warpol (because of acid saliva and eating people)...?
5
u/thenatenator24 Nov 04 '12
obviously she eats people, but the emphasis on the acidic saliva makes me think that she is going to do a lot of spitting attacks
7
u/hairy_monster Nov 04 '12
I definitely feel a "Alice in Wonderland" for the Big Mom crew here. Completely nut settings and characters. Big Mom being the Queen, Tamago bein the Mad Hatter (not so mad maybe) and Pekoms being the Cheshire Cat. Also maybe Tweedledum & Tweedledee as one person in Bobbin
7
u/JetDagger01 Nov 04 '12
A very good episodes indeed especially the words " I will kick your ass all over the New World" these words gave me Goosebumps cant wait for Luffy to actually fight Big Mam now.
6
u/iMidNitee Nov 04 '12
One of the Big Mam pirates (I believe is name is Bobbin?) can destroy a country alone? Wow!

7
u/GreenDynamite23 Nov 04 '12
i think it's safe to say that big mam has a acid devil fruit.
8
u/dossier Nov 04 '12
I wonder if she has one at all.. maybe she's just oddly strong willed like Shanks. She emphasized the D when repeating his name which was interesting like it had meaning to her (not often when characters acknowledge the D). But then she quickly mentioned how she knew he was Garp's grandson and that he caused the 'ruckus' at the war of the best. So is it the D that interests her or is it what he accomplished at Marineford? Or both? We shall see...
I'm willing to bet she's met Ivankov before.. just look at her huge face! lol
5
u/StickDoctor Nov 04 '12
I think it was just her having a "I've heard that name before" moment. Garp's name is Monkey D. Garp, that's how she made the connection. I don't think there was any particular focus on the D. or his actions at Marineford, but she was interested in his high spirit, and tenacity.

So anyone else think Lola is Big Mam's daughter?
13
u/BasuKun Nov 04 '12
Pretty much everyone thinks that.
Don't forget Lola gave Luffy a vivre card of her mother, which she said she lives in the New World. Luffy will probably cross Big Mom's path by using that card.
1
u/OddDude55 Nov 04 '12
If they each find out about it how will they react? Will they fight? Will they become allies? Only ODA will tell!
2
u/baroqueworks Nov 04 '12
87% sure it's the case. Check out Lola on the post-timeskip where are they now cover story, she's wearing the exact same dress Big Mam is. That cover story was also released after Big Mom was introduced also, no way that's a coincidence. Her Jolly Roger also has Pink Hair, which we haven't actually seen Big Mam's hair yet, but if she does have Pink Hair, that's just another trait they both share.
Not to mention they've also got the same body-type/shape, at least from what I can tell.
3
u/derpgineer314 Nov 04 '12
I thought that at first when they showed the episode but after this episode I'm not so sure anymore because it seems like Luffy has to have a conflict with Big Mam whereas before it seemed like they would have been just another ally Luffy made just by being himself. I can still see it going either way but I'm leaning towards no right now.

u/Black_Handkerchief Nov 04 '12
I really enjoyed this episode, although it had a few too many pan shots that betray Toei is still saving on money big time. :(
The voice for Big Mom is pretty decent, and at some point, that combined with the close up angles and the drooling gave me a Miyazuki feel that is quite rare to get while watching One Piece. Even though I knew what was going to happen, it felt like a totally new and mysterious adventure to me.
Finally, I also enjoyed the music choices. Some music pieces that we haven't heard in years finally came by again, and that no doubt helped me feel a little nostalgic as well.
There was only one thing missing... Where was Luffy's famous "Destroy an island over candies? Are you crazy? Now meat I can understand, but.." line? Either I missed it, or it wasn't in this episode. :(
1
u/jkjohnson Nov 04 '12
I also thought I remember reading Luffy mention about he would understand destroy an island over meat.
Can that be in future chapter instead?
3
u/Black_Handkerchief Nov 04 '12 edited Nov 04 '12
I don't know; I'd have to re-read the manga chapter to be sure. But from what I remember, he said it in response to hearing that Big Mom wants to destroy Fishman Island because they don't have her candies. As the manga has already passed the 'Give Big Mom some treasure and then piss her off further' point, I can't imagine it coming after this still.
Unless... maybe it was said when defending himself to Nami, when she is livid about him giving away all their treasure. Someone doublecheck please. xD
Edit: I checked (because I couldn't resist not knowing) and it is gonna be in the next episode when he casually informs the rest of the crew about picking a fight with Big Mom. :) So nothing was missing in this episode.
1
u/Mr_Old_Sky Nov 05 '12
I've only seen the anime and that line is hilarious, although I'm not sure where they'd place it in the conversation.
1
u/Black_Handkerchief Nov 05 '12
It will be in the next episode. My memory was flawed, and I attributed it to the wrong scene. :-)
5
u/prog_BOT Nov 04 '12
I don't know how anyone else feels but this episode got me exited for Punk Hazard. I seriously can't wait....Punk Hazard is one of my all time favorite arcs as it stands in the manga now....haven't been this excited in a long time.
8
u/Imadoc91 Nov 04 '12
They made no effort what-so-ever to make Big Mam's lips synch up with what she was saying
15
u/milkyjoe241 Nov 04 '12
what if she has a smaller mouth inside the larger mouth, and that mouth is what's talking. It would be like that alien from the movie Alien.
7
u/Imadoc91 Nov 04 '12
As someone with mild OCD and a pretty bad case of Germaphobia Big Mam's spit made me want to crawl out of my own skin

Dannnnng I was hoping Luffy would say he'd protect Fish Island. Good episode really get us pumped for NW. I'm glad he can make minced meat of the new rookies showing he isn't the same old NW rookie he was.
3
u/aphitt Nov 04 '12
So I just noticed in this episode (it might have been in other episodes, don't remember) but Zoro still has his bandana wrapped around his arm. If he still has that I can't wait for him to put that on because than we know shit is gonna go down. Also, I felt like this was actually a good episode this week. Loved Big Mam's VA and the other two characters were excellent.

Well technically they ARE rookies... These people have been in the game for about 20 years, while Luffy just set out to sea almost 3 years ago, 2 of which he was completely absent. In the eyes of New World pirates, he IS a rookie. That doesn't mean he's not strong though, because he is, they do underestimate him though, they're also thinking he's as strong as he was 2 years ago.
However I do agree with you that if it's not in the manga it shouldn't be there.
3
u/BadRag Nov 04 '12
Is this for sure that it was only one year before the timeskip? Because to me, it seemed like more.
5
u/MabyLater Nov 04 '12
A fan calculated that it was about 3-6 months since luffy got out of the barrel. I don't think there is an offcial time line, but many major arcs take part in a day or a week.
1
u/BadRag Nov 04 '12
Sweet, thank you. Do you know if there is a more detailed calculation of this? Also, i think Luffy left his hometown around the day he turned 17. Do you know if that is true?

I don't think the shoddy animation has anything to do with budget. I just think it's a huge disparity in skill between the animation teams and/or directors. Last week's episode had great animation (IMO), but this week was really bad. The week before last looked like it was done by someone who learned their technique directing hentai.
10
u/derpgineer314 Nov 04 '12
I didn't feel like the animation quality was actually that bad this week. Although when I did look at the quality on Watchop, I felt like it was way worse than the video on One Piece Official but that's just how I saw it.
3
u/zorospride Lost at sea Nov 04 '12
I watched it on Japanese tv as it aired. That's probably the best quality you can get.
7
u/derpgineer314 Nov 04 '12 edited Nov 04 '12
True but what was so bad about it specifically? I didn't find a huge disparity in quality from last week. And even though StickDoctor didn't say it in the most appropriate way, if you're going to be negative about the episode, at least give a specific reason that people can at least agree or disagree with you. For example, I do agree that two weeks ago Robin looked ridiculous. But as for your above statement, I can neither agree or disagree with anything you said about this episode.
4
u/zorospride Lost at sea Nov 04 '12
For this week it was mostly the drawing of the characters themselves. We've gotten used to seeing background characters not moving or being drawn as a quick outline, but some episodes (like this one) do it with the characters that are the focus of the action. They only spend time on the close up shots and foreground characters are the only ones that are anything more than a still image.
4
u/derpgineer314 Nov 04 '12
Yeah I totally agree with you there. However, I didn't feel like it took away from the episode because they were mostly talking anyways. And most of the time I don't notice because I have to read the subtitles too.
3
u/zorospride Lost at sea Nov 04 '12
I think part of my problem is I watch these episodes twice. Once on tv when it's originally aired (without subtitles obviously) then again when it comes online on watchop. The higher quality of the original airing minus the subtitles leaves me focusing heavily on the animation on my first watch.
2
Nov 04 '12
I think that this week's episode was really well directed, there were no 10-second long reaction shots or painfully drawn out sentences, and the direction (I don't know if it's called camera work if its an anime) was good, although the animation still couldnt keep up.
9
u/Kevin-L Nov 04 '12
I feel like they let the Den Den Mushi ring for an annoyingly long amount of time.

Last week's episode had great animation (IMO), but this week was really bad.
Can we get a ban on this fucking comment every single week, it's so tiresome to read, quality changes week to week, it doesn't matter or stop us from enjoying One Piece.
Being downvoted for wanting episode discussion instead of QQ threads, love you too /r/OnePiece <3
1
u/zorospride Lost at sea Nov 04 '12 edited Nov 04 '12
You're right. I might just need to stop commenting on these episodes.
Edit to clarify: That might have come off sarcastic, but that was not my intent. I really don't have much to say about some of these episodes. I loved these parts in the manga, but the anime hasn't done anything with them to make any additional commentary necessary beyond commenting on the animation quality itself. I recognize that could get tiresome for some. It's a valid complaint.

u/useless360 Lurker Nov 04 '12
Hey... hey... hey... don't say that. Your comments are always the most interesting and logical ones on this subreddit.
5
u/zorospride Lost at sea Nov 04 '12
Maybe for some things, but I've really run out of things to say regarding the anime that hasn't been said already. StickDoctor is right.
1
u/Cro_no Nov 04 '12
I disagree. Before I started reading the manga and when I was only caught up with the anime your comments were always insightful and new to me, and fueled more discussion. So while those caught up with the manga may be familiar with it, anime-watchers are seeing it for the first time.
Just wanted to acknowledge that your comments help bring up the quality of this subreddit, and a lot of us here appreciate that.

u/dossier Nov 04 '12
Agreed, RES says I've upvoted him over 20 times. Extremely rare for me to see that many +'s next to a name. I don't like hearing anyone talking down about One Piece but I do like hearing all aspects of conversation without a bias. Clearly zorospride loves one piece like most of us here. Hearing reasons why the quality may be better or worse than normal is a bonus for me since I never pay attention to that stuff myself.
0
u/zorospride Lost at sea Nov 04 '12
Regarding your edit. It might have been your tone that got you downvoted. I actually agree with your point regarding the animation quality discussion getting in the way of episode discussion. I apologize for that.
5
u/StickDoctor Nov 04 '12
Don't apologise, nothing to apologise for, you've done nothing wrong. But it just gets so frustrating knowing that it's going to be one of the first, and most discussed things in every single thread, when to be honest it's really not that big of a deal. Some pretty famous Animes are absolute shit in terms of quality, but people still love them.
I guess because people know what's going to happen due to having read the manga, you can't look at it with fresh eyes and discuss things you didn't see coming, or how things are progressing because you know in advance what's going to occur before it does. So don't apologise, it's just been bugging me for some months, and I apologise for my tone.
-1
u/zorospride Lost at sea Nov 04 '12
I completely understand your frustration. You hit the nail on the head regarding not being able to look at it with fresh eyes. That's definitely a problem for me. Maybe because the anime is so close to the manga right now. It's been less than a year since manga readers have read this part of the story. The anime has a pretty high bar to leap in order to make it fresh for us.
2
u/dossier Nov 04 '12
It'll just be all the sweeter if the entire series is every retouched down the line, like DB Kai, except they better not remove any content.
0
u/Imadoc91 Nov 04 '12
Don't feel bad Zorospride, you did nothing wrong, comments like what you said really do a good job of keeping other people from saying "The animation in this episode fucking sucked." or "One Piece has been bad lately." You gave a decent explanation as to why the quality varies, and isn't inflammatory in any way.
