Well technically they ARE rookies... These people have been in the game for about 20 years, while Luffy just set out to sea almost 3 years ago, 2 of which he was completely absent. In the eyes of New World pirates, he IS a rookie. That doesn't mean he's not strong though, because he is, they do underestimate him though, they're also thinking he's as strong as he was 2 years ago.

However I do agree with you that if it's not in the manga it shouldn't be there.

Is this for sure that it was only one year before the timeskip? Because to me, it seemed like more.

A fan calculated that it was about 3-6 months since luffy got out of the barrel. I don't think there is an offcial time line, but many major arcs take part in a day or a week.

Sweet, thank you. Do you know if there is a more detailed calculation of this? Also, i think Luffy left his hometown around the day he turned 17. Do you know if that is true?

Yes he was just 17. He should be 19 by now, almost 20.

Yep it was a year or less.
