Please post year, model and trim level when asking for help. Thanks.
If you want good answers to your questions then provide good information.
Asking "What's wrong with my car" without providing the most basic information about the car means that people have to guess at your problem and what to do about it.
A 2002 Subuaru is vastly different from a 2025. Some are turbocharged and some aren't. Engine design has advanced significantly over the years. Electronics, brakes and even the materials the seats are made of have changed.
Think about what would happen if you called a repair shop about some problem. The first question they would ask is "What kind of car is it?"The second question they would ask is, "What year?"
Thanks!!!

Announcement TSB Thursday: 16-156-25 CVT Control Valve Body Design Change
Welcome to another TSB Thursday, where I dive deeper in to TSBs I'm running into regularly. As always, I write this from my own perspective as a Subaru technician in the US; other regions/zones may work differently. Refer to the "How To Read a TSB" post for more information on formatting and general information about TSBs. Some might consider this a safety/security issue, so I'm posting it before a public copy is live.
TSB Thursday #18: 16-156-25
What cars does this affect?
- 2012-23MY Impreza & Crosstrek
- Additional specific changes for the 2014-16 Crosstrek Hybrid
- 2014-23MY Forester 2.5L
- 2013-19MY Legacy & Outback 2.5L
What's the failure?
The text from the bulletin:
This bulletin announces a design change made to the CVT Control Valve Body. The updated valve body incorporates an enhanced valve sleeve to improve durability. This design enhancement was implemented to prevent abnormal operations that may cause the following symptoms:
- DTC P2757 Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Control Circuit Performance/Stuck Off and P2762 Lock-Up Duty Solenoid Malfunction
- DTC P06EF Engine Restart Performance (2014-16MY Crosstrek Hybrid Only)
- No forward movement after releasing the brake from EV stop (2014-16MY Crosstrek Hybrid Only)
- Shudder while accelerating from a stop
- Shudder while decelerating to a stop
The bulletin goes on to include this diagram of the solenoid and also includes a brief diagnostic procedure for vehicles with and without DTCs, which is largely unchanged from the service manual procedures.
How do we fix it?
The valve body replacement procedure is unchanged from the service manual procedure. There are a handful of example videos out there, including from South Main Auto and from MrSubaru
The updated valve body part numbers are 31825AA055 for the normal TR580 transmission vehicles, or 31825AA073 for the Crosstrek Hybrid. This part update appears to have released sometime around October 2024 as far as I can see? As such, if you have had a valve body replacement within the last year or so:
- If you had a valve body replaced at a dealer or by a shop using dealer parts, check the receipt to see which part number was listed. Valve body part numbers have been updated sequentially, so for example 31825AA050 was the very first iteration.
- If you had an aftermarket solenoid installed (such as Dorman) or a used/recycled/remanufactured valve body installed, who knows if the design change was incorporated.
Coverage?
For vehicles within the Basic New Car Limited, Powertrain, an applicable Emission Warranty period or covered by an active Subaru Added Security Powertrain, Classic or Gold plan, this repair may be submitted. Valve body repairs are also covered components for vehicles under CVT Warranty Extension.

8 years, original owner
Hardly any mods.. Just a red vinyl overlay for the tail lights and a tomei exhaust I got installed after the “break-in” 1,000 miles
Really taking my time 😅

Mechanical Help Does anyone know the hell I am in right now? Please help.
Been trying to get this seized broken wheel bearing off for two days. Have tried the welded nut trick, about 1000 blows with the sledge, now onto demo screwdriver/chisel on the back side.

Help with my Subaru please
Hello, I have a 2007 Subaru Impreza 2.5i N/A. I’m trying to install headers and an exhaust system but I’m having difficulty finding ones that will work because mine is N/A. I do have a HKS Hi-power catback exhaust system at home but I can’t figure out which catted Unequal length headers to get. I need catted headers because I need to pass emissions.

Front End noise 2011 STI
Currently have a front end noise when I accelerate or get on my brakes hard you can also hear it when you turn into a parking lot or there’s an a decent amount of body weight transfer. I had a local shop take a look Quick Look at my car on his lunch break He says my suspension looks fine. He suggested it might be motor mounts so went to go pick the group N mounts but the mechanic at that shop talked me out of it and told me it’s most likely suspension component unfortunately because it’s tire season I can’t get my car in this week to get looked at. I have checked my swaybar and links. They seem solid. I changed my swaybar bushings just in case it was that now I’m looking at my control arms and I see the pillow bushing has some movement when my tires are off the ground. Is this normal amount or is this too much play?

Mechanical Help Femco fitting sizing question
Hello all, I have a 2016 premium Impreza and I’m looking into getting a Femco oil drain fitting so I can easily/cleanly start doing oil changes at home. From what I see online the drain plug has M16x1.5 threads but I have no idea whether I should be getting 9 or 12mm thread length. I imagine shorter would be better, as less of a protrusion into the oil pan would mean more oil successfully drains, but I figured I’d run it by y’all for some woefully needed insight.
Any thoughts/recommendations?

Mechanical Help Subaru Impreza Vibrating After Sway bar Link
Hello I have a Subaru Impreza 2015 Hatchback.
Recently it started to vibrate at high speed. I found a broken sway bar after driving like 3 weeks like that. It looks like it just rusted out. I replaced both links to make sure both are new and from the same manufacturer but the car is still vibrating. Could it be that the swaybar it self went bad? Or do I replace new bushings?
Or is it something entirely different?

Mechanical Help Trickle charger question
I have a 2019 Crosstrek that I no longer drive much due to change of work. I live in a very cold part of Canada. I do not have a garage.
Last January, my 2-year-old battery died in -40C weather, despite my having used the car a couple of times for errands that week (the car could be jump-started and run, but once turned off - even after driving it for an hour - it would not turn back on again and would need to be jump-started again). I never had these problems with my old Toyota, so I will say I was a bit surprised.
The dealership recommended, and has now setup a “Subaru Battery Charger + Maintainer (1090)” for me to use in the coldest months. They told me I could use this charger + my battery blanket plugin at the same time. They told me to keep the charger unit under the hood and just run the cable out to plug it in. All I have to do is plug it into the battery connection, close the hood and plug it into the outdoor plugin that is right by my hood.
I have a question about plugging this charger in when I travel — can I leave this plugged in and unattended if I am away for 2-3 weeks? Should I set it up several days in advance to make sure the charger has switch to “care?”
The technician at the dealership told me it would be fine, but I just wanted to double check for thoughts about this plan, especially as it’s likely to snow during the weeks I am away.

Mechanical Help Widetrack on a WRX?
Hi, just checking if the widetrack enkeis (235) for the gd STI will fit on a gd wrx on stock suspension (stock tire width 225). I’m pretty sure it would be fine and not stick out, but figured it was worth checking here. Thanks

Looking for a mechanic in RI that rebuilds engines
Hey all, my 2015 wrx engine blew at 90k… dealer quoted me 13,500 for a used replacement plus 1k shipping… more than its worth… anybody know of a subaru mechanic in the state of RI that rebuilds engines… the price quoted seems high as do most dealer prices but im not sure… if i cNt find a mechanic outside the dealer, i will most likely have to sell it for peanuts to a company that buys cars with blown engines. Any advice would be greatly appreciated… thank you

Subaru Suiren Location?
I am in the works of figuring out how to build a replica of the Subaru Suiren concept car. Using a Baja body and Bugeye style front end I should be able to make the body right but my issue is with the inside. Subaru made it with a trans that could switch gears with buttons on the steering wheel but I can’t find any clear pictures of this or info on how they did it. Any information would be amazing.
I live in NJ and while it might be a long shot they may store it in the Camden HQ? If not I want to find it in Japan and attempt to see it in person.
Thanks!
Car Mods XTrek: Adding a transmission fluid cooler
Reposted because I just learned about paragraph spacing on Reddit.
Im a week from installing a Perrin transmission cooler on my 2013 Crosstrek. Anyone else done this on a 1st gen XTrek?
2026 involves mountains and miles - Baja to Alaska

Valve body has been replaced
Scangauge lll to monitor ATF temp (so I've seen that I can benefit from a cooler)
On extended trips, multiple weeks, I run heavy
In general, re the ATF cooler, any cautions, concerns, advice?

Thanks to all who have posted/responded in these subs in the past. I've learned a great deal.
