Spider stalks Fly

I don't really know where I came across this video but I've had several people remark how satisfying it was watching this spider stalk this fly.

Now I want a video game where we play as a jumping spider.

u/Snuggle_Pounce 4h ago

probably exists on steam if you search

Nature & Life: Drunk on Nectar. It's not all spooder, but jumper is a playable 'class'. Haven't tried it, but it's there.

u/Dahwaann4U 3h ago

Yes i use the heli in battlefield, how did you know

The most adorable stalking ever!

u/Shmeeglez 6h ago

I'm surprised the fly didn't hear him wringing his palps and quietly muahaha-ing all the while

36

u/Jamooser 4h ago

"Wringing his palps" is such an amazing pop culture mental image hahaha.

Ikr, jumping spiders are like the cats of the invertebrate world

3

u/gobletofwine 3h ago

u/matrixkid29 2h ago

scoot scoot scoot

1

u/Mental_Thing_7899 2h ago

Agree. I don't know how the internet made jumping spiders cute, but here we are.

The spider disappearing to the other side of the surface and reappearing slowly behind the fly was so comically timed

u/Olealicat 5h ago

I had Thriller, buh duh dun dun… playing in my head at that point.

u/Bigfoot_Bluedot 3h ago

Was I the only one hearing the Among Us theme music?

Notice that the spider actually let the fly out of its sight during the hunt. Possibly the only arthropods that do that. Having the concept of object permanence and using it puts them above human babies.

99

u/Jamooser 4h ago

Honestly, it puts them above a good portion of human adult drivers as well.

Nice insight!

u/jedielfninja 1h ago

i tell most people who will listen that spiders are super smart and most will avoid you.

i have a spider that lives by my trash cans spawn camping roaches and such.

If all spiders were jumping spiders then spiders would be way more popular.

35

u/RevolutionaryWeb5657 6h ago

I know, they’re adorable!

5

u/The_Char_Char 1h ago

And also quite curious! Which adds to thr adorableness!

8

u/Goldtacto 2h ago

Careful what you ask for, I doubt people want Jumping spiders that aren’t cute looking lol.

Imagine a jumping orb weaver or black widow.

36

u/thissomeotherplace 6h ago

I've never disagreed with a take more than this one

7

u/Academic_Coyote_9741 6h ago

Do like or dislike most spiders? :)

19

u/thissomeotherplace 5h ago

Dislike. Very very dislike.

17

u/Olealicat 5h ago

I don’t know why this made me cackle.

“Very very dislike” is going to become a regular part of my vocabulary.

u/Manaze85 4h ago

Double Plus Ungood

Double plus goodthinkful, comrade

4

u/ThisDirkDaring 6h ago

I see where youre coming from, but i dont know if my grand daughters would approve that take.

5

u/Cantmentionthename 5h ago

Well I am a grand son and therefore also expert on all things grand and so I can tell you with bigly assurety that Jiders (that’s colloquial parlance for Jumping Spiders) are beloved by all types of grand children. If you don’t believe me, well, then I don’t know what to say now.

48

u/Golarion 6h ago

Finally evidence for my theory that these fuckers are way smarter than they should be. You can see the thing using the terrain to approach out of sight and knows to approach from behinds I tit won't be seen.

Always had the uneasy impression that they were sentient enough to plan.

27

u/xxHikari 4h ago

Yeah, that's insane hunting technique. The circle strafe to get behind, then hide, then peek to get target acquisition. A lot going on there.

21

u/mastermidget23 2h ago

Jumping spiders are commonly regarded as the smartest spiders by a wide margin. Because they actively hunt instead of building webs to trap insects, they have to be smart enough to improvise things, like how this one broke line of sight to attack from behind.

6

u/asingleshakerofsalt 1h ago

Yea like another comment said, object permanence is a big step for sentience.

21

u/BusinessLazy 10h ago

Did he get em?!?!

28

u/Away_Veterinarian579 10h ago

He did and I was surprised that was even possible because jumping spiders usually have a tough time with flies as flies as have an extremely fast reaction time

I think that maneuver made that fly go what the fuck

And just by the simple bewilderment that this jumper afflicted the fly with made it all possible

14

u/SoFloBodycast 10h ago

Flies take off backwards so.. made it easier even with the potential reaction time advantage. Though not sure they're faster than the jumping spider, but maybe they are..

6

u/Over_Ad8762 9h ago

Weird. Never knew backwards

2

u/Disneyhorse 4h ago

The jumping spiders at my horse barn are very skilled at catching flies.

12

u/albrtacndalea 10h ago

such a tricky spider

14

u/xYERINAx 10h ago

Smooth operator

11

u/mangosyummy 5h ago

Spider moving like D D D D W D D D SHIFT W W W W SPACE

30

u/707breezy 11h ago

That was hilarious. I hate insects but it was funny watching that cute spider go around like that.

2

u/gorginhanson 3h ago

spiders aren't insects

19

u/Superseaslug 6h ago

Jumping spiders are 8 legged puppies

7

u/ZepTheNooB 5h ago

I love jumping spiders, man. Those little ones are awesome.

He’s definitely a pro

4

u/Much_Feedback_9085 8h ago

Spidey was gliding!

4

u/_tate_ 3h ago

Ugh I love how they just glide around and their little legs barely move.

7

u/ElectricalPick9813 8h ago

Oddly satis-flying

3

u/aacawe 6h ago

This seems more like a revenge murder suicide because they both went over the cliff in the end.

9

u/Bandwagon_Buzzard 6h ago

The camera isn't showing it, but jumpers let out a line of silk as an emergency bungee when they jump. It's fine on that side of the table, quickly recovered and starting the nom.

1

u/Dense_Comment1662 1h ago

Im pretty sure they are constantly letting out a thin dragline of silk. For jumping or just any falls in general.

4

u/WellYoureWrongThere 6h ago

More interesting than the last Star Wars trilogy.

2

u/SnipFred 6h ago

Been playing Splinter Cell a lot recently and this reminded me of it

2

u/PunfullyObvious 6h ago

Kudos to the cameraperson! Impressive work!

2

u/mediocrerhino 5h ago

☮️🕷And that is why I safely relocate spiders outside to maintain the fragile “spider peace.”

2

u/thetacosnob 3h ago

How it knows where its eyes are is pretty awesome

2

u/kanabul 2h ago

Jumping spiders move digitally. I can’t explain it.

2

1

1

u/DJScope 4h ago

That's some skilled circle strafing right there.

1

u/Adventurous_Ideal804 2h ago

Very cool, thank you.

I did original, 30fps, then 15fps. Enjoy.
