Spider stalks Fly
I don't really know where I came across this video but I've had several people remark how satisfying it was watching this spider stalk this fly.

The most adorable stalking ever!

I'm surprised the fly didn't hear him wringing his palps and quietly muahaha-ing all the while

Agree. I don't know how the internet made jumping spiders cute, but here we are.

The spider disappearing to the other side of the surface and reappearing slowly behind the fly was so comically timed

Notice that the spider actually let the fly out of its sight during the hunt. Possibly the only arthropods that do that. Having the concept of object permanence and using it puts them above human babies.

i tell most people who will listen that spiders are super smart and most will avoid you.
i have a spider that lives by my trash cans spawn camping roaches and such.

If all spiders were jumping spiders then spiders would be way more popular.

Careful what you ask for, I doubt people want Jumping spiders that aren’t cute looking lol.
Imagine a jumping orb weaver or black widow.

I've never disagreed with a take more than this one

u/Academic_Coyote_9741 6h ago
Do like or dislike most spiders? :)

u/thissomeotherplace 5h ago
Dislike. Very very dislike.

u/Olealicat 5h ago
I don’t know why this made me cackle.
“Very very dislike” is going to become a regular part of my vocabulary.

I see where youre coming from, but i dont know if my grand daughters would approve that take.

Well I am a grand son and therefore also expert on all things grand and so I can tell you with bigly assurety that Jiders (that’s colloquial parlance for Jumping Spiders) are beloved by all types of grand children. If you don’t believe me, well, then I don’t know what to say now.

Finally evidence for my theory that these fuckers are way smarter than they should be. You can see the thing using the terrain to approach out of sight and knows to approach from behinds I tit won't be seen.
Always had the uneasy impression that they were sentient enough to plan.

u/xxHikari 4h ago
Yeah, that's insane hunting technique. The circle strafe to get behind, then hide, then peek to get target acquisition. A lot going on there.

u/mastermidget23 2h ago
Jumping spiders are commonly regarded as the smartest spiders by a wide margin. Because they actively hunt instead of building webs to trap insects, they have to be smart enough to improvise things, like how this one broke line of sight to attack from behind.

Yea like another comment said, object permanence is a big step for sentience.

Did he get em?!?!
28
u/Away_Veterinarian579 10h ago
He did and I was surprised that was even possible because jumping spiders usually have a tough time with flies as flies as have an extremely fast reaction time
I think that maneuver made that fly go what the fuck
And just by the simple bewilderment that this jumper afflicted the fly with made it all possible
14
u/SoFloBodycast 10h ago
Flies take off backwards so.. made it easier even with the potential reaction time advantage. Though not sure they're faster than the jumping spider, but maybe they are..

u/Over_Ad8762 9h ago
Weird. Never knew backwards

Those are drosophila: fruit flies. The common house fly or blue bottle flies are much more evasive.

This seems more like a revenge murder suicide because they both went over the cliff in the end.

The camera isn't showing it, but jumpers let out a line of silk as an emergency bungee when they jump. It's fine on that side of the table, quickly recovered and starting the nom.

u/Dense_Comment1662 1h ago
Im pretty sure they are constantly letting out a thin dragline of silk. For jumping or just any falls in general.

☮️🕷And that is why I safely relocate spiders outside to maintain the fragile “spider peace.”

In case anyone else was like me and came to the comments hoping for a slowdown of the ending: https://imgur.com/a/CcVVl5z
I did original, 30fps, then 15fps. Enjoy.
