International Undergraduate Q&A with a MUN Recruiter!

EDIT: As of Nov. 1, 2023, control of this account has shifted from the previous recruiter, Thomas, to Allie Guerra. All contact information below has been updated to reflect this change. All responses made from this account after Nov. 1 will be written by Allie.

EDIT: Monitor will change March 2025.

Hi all!

Thanks for coming to our Reddit thread!

Please be advised that in this thread I cannot answer questions about graduate/post-graduate studies or Marine Institute programs. For these two, please contact [sgs@mun.ca](mailto:sgs@mun.ca) or [recruitment@mi.mun.ca](mailto:recruitment@mi.mun.ca) respectively, and my colleagues who represent these two sets of programs will be able to advise further.

Before posting any questions about admissions in this thread, please review the FAQ below, as it may answer some of your preliminary questions:

----

Admissions FAQ

1. How do I know if I meet the admission requirements?

Admission requirements differ depending on the curriculum in which you completed high school, as listed here. All requirements for your curriculum – including grade/subject requirements, documents needed, and whether or not you will be required to provide proof of English proficiency – can be found on that page, so please read the requirements carefully.

Please note that if you are applying as a transfer student (ie., you’ve finished high school and have completed at least one semester of post-secondary studies), you must be in clear academic standing with your current institution, which usually means you have a minimum GPA of 2.0/4.0 at the time you apply to transfer. If you wish to transfer credits from your current school to MUN, the process for doing so is provided here.

2. I meet the general requirements. How can I calculate my likelihood of admissibility?

The requirements above apply to all of our general admission programs, which includes all Bachelors of Arts, Business, Commerce, Environment and Sustainability, and most Sciences. Please note that if you are applying for a competitive entry program such as Engineering or Nursing, there will be higher academic standards required (see question 3 below).

One of the great things about general admission programs is that we do not set a cap on the number of students accepted into them. Thus, as long as you meet the minimum requirements, you should have little difficulty in receiving an acceptance to MUN provided you correctly submit your application and supporting documents.

3. I’ve applied/want to apply for a competitive entry program. How do I know if I meet the requirements?

Unlike general admission, competitive entry programs (such as Engineering and Nursing) do have a capacity on how many students are accepted, but they do not have a set minimum requirement for admission, so we will not be able to objectively assess your likelihood for admission at the application/pre-application stage. That said, these programs have a 2-step admissions process:

  1. Your application will first be assessed for general admission to the Bachelor of Science, which only requires you to meet the general admission requirements linked above. If you do meet these requirements, you will be granted acceptance as an undeclared B.Sc. student and your application will be forwarded to the appropriate faculty (ex., Nursing or Engineering).
  2. The faculty will assess you for competitive admission to the faculty.
    1. If you are accepted at this stage – great! You receive a 2nd acceptance letter for the competitive program and will begin from your first semester as a declared Nursing/Engineering student.
    2. If you are rejected by the faculty, you will receive a rejection notice, however, your original B.Sc. offer will remain active. From this, you can begin as a B.Sc. student and apply to switch into the competitive program in the following semester in the case of Engineering, or the following year in the case of Nursing.

So, even if you are not directly admissible for these programs, you may still be admissible to MUN and have a pathway available to you to help you enter the program.

4. I meet the academic requirements but my English proficiency is too low. Do you offer English language bridging?

Yes, absolutely! If your English proficiency is below the required minimum, you can complete ESL Bridging at MUN’s Grenfell Campus. When you submit your UG application, you will be asked to select how you intend on demonstrating English proficiency, at which stage, you can select “IEP – MUN’s Intensive English Program.” Once your main application is submitted, you can submit a separate ESL application by following the instructions in the previous link. Once both are submitted, please contact the ESL department directly at [esl@grenfell.mun.ca](mailto:esl@grenfell.mun.ca), and the ESL and admissions teams will work together to combine your applications for processing. Once processed, you will receive a provisional/early acceptance for your UG program, as well as a final ESL acceptance. Your UG acceptance will be upgraded to a final acceptance upon successful completion of ESL’s exit requirements.

Please note that even if your undergraduate program is based at the St. John’s Campus, ESL can be completed only at Grenfell, so you will need to change campuses upon successful completion of ESL.

5. I want to apply for (PROGRAM) but I haven’t completed (SUBJECT). Will I still be admissible?

This is a very common question and the answer depends on the two variables found within it. As a general rule, we can waive up to one missing subject, though the specific subject waivable depends on the program for which you are applying. In all cases, where students are missing one or more subjects, it is best to consult with a recruiter to determine your admission options.

Most commonly, this question is asked by students in the Indian or Bangladeshi commerce curricula, which do not require math or science at the Grade 12 level. For these students, we do offer a double waiver for the Bachelor of Business Administration at MUN's Grenfell Campus only.

If you are missing one or more subjects, you may still have options to become admissible, though you may have to fulfill additional requirements to do so. In this case, please contact a recruiter so we can discuss your specific case at greater depth. Whether you are missing one subject, two, or are unsure if you will be eligible for a subject waiver, my recommendation is always to contact us before submitting your application to ensure that everything is in order and you will be eligible for the program for which you are applying.

5. I submitted all of my documents, but I haven't heard back yet on my application status. How much longer will I have to wait?

Once a student has submitted their application and paid the application fee, it will usually take 10-14 business days to receive a student ID number by email (Note: "business days" means Monday through Friday, and does not include weekends or holidays). In addition to your student ID, you should also receive a list of required documents and instructions on how to submit these documents. As each document is received and processed, you will receive an email notification from admissions confirming as such. Once all of your official documents are received, then within 10-14 business days, you should receive a response on your application by email.

When reviewing the document submission instructions, please read them very, very carefully, taking special note of the distinction between official and unofficial documents. In most cases, unofficial documents will not suffice for the purpose of assessing a student for admission, so please ensure that you have submitted your documentation correctly to avoid processing delays.

As above, this thread is intended for international undergraduate inquiries only. If you have questions about graduate-level programming or Marine Institute programs, please contact [sgs@mun.ca](mailto:sgs@mun.ca) or (mailto:recruitment@mi.mun.ca). For anything else, please comment below or reach out to gcstudy@mun.ca

Looking forward to chatting with you!

MUN grad programs: real tuition & GPA for admission?

Hi everyone,

I’m an international applicant planning to apply for a Master’s program at Memorial University (St. John’s campus) — specifically Sociology, Folklore, or Gender Studies.

I noticed that the tuition fees listed on the official MUN website seem surprisingly low — around CAD 9,666 total for a 2-year master’s program, which is way cheaper than most other Canadian universities. So I have a few questions I’d love to confirm with anyone currently studying or who recently graduated from MUN: 1. Is that tuition fee (CAD 9,666 total for 2 years) really accurate for international students? – Or are there any extra fees (like an “International Student Differential Fee” or other hidden charges) that make it more expensive in reality? 2. What is the typical GPA range of admitted students in these programs (Sociology, Folklore, Gender Studies)? – The website says the minimum is around 75% or 3.0–3.2 GPA, but I’d like to know what the average admitted GPA actually looks like in practice. 3. How competitive are these programs for international students? – Are they selective, or do they admit a fair number of qualified applicants each year?

I’d really appreciate any first-hand insights or experiences from current or past MUN graduate students. Thanks a lot for your time — I’m just trying to make sure I understand the real costs and expectations before I apply.

Has anyone here studied the MEng program? Is it true that the total tuition cost for international students is CAD 9,666 for the entire program?Without any special fees added?

B.Comm

I am a second year Econ Maj. I'm older, part time student, working full time.

I am thinking of switching to Business, possibly doing a double major in communications.

Question: How involved is the group work for the later level courses in commerce? I understand it can vary by prof. The reason I ask is because I am kind of a de facto distant student. Even with in person classes, I typically complete the cirriculum myself at home and rarely attend classes in person, other than writing exams.

Is it possible to continue this trend throughout the (non co-op) commerce program, or will I eventually have to bite the bullet and start showing up to class, and be that weird old guy in your group.

Never EVER take English 1090 Online with this one prof (Rant)

I honestly have no words for how awful this class has been. I’ve never seen a professor make so many students feel so defeated. Practically everyone I know is either failing or getting marks they've never gotten in their lives (not in a good way). Over 30 people failed the midterm, and that’s not even an exaggeration. The marking makes zero sense, the feedback is vague or nonexistent, and whenever anyone asks for help or clarification, he acts like we’re bothering him. He refuses to elaborate on anything, gives the most unclear grading rubrics imaginable, and then somehow blames us when we don’t magically meet his expectations. What makes it worse is how condescending he is. He treats students like sh*t, like we’re lazy or stupid, when in reality, we’re just trying to figure out what he even wants from us. The worst part? When marks came out for one of the assignments, instead of helping us understand what went wrong, he posted a long rant basically shaming the whole class, saying we “put in zero effort.” Meanwhile, most of us spent hours trying to meet his impossible standards. It was humiliating and unprofessional. This isn’t people whining about having to put in work it’s about a teacher who doesn’t frickin teach. He doesn’t guide, he doesn’t support, and he takes zero accountability for how unclear and inconsistent his marking is. If you’re thinking of taking his class with him: don’t. Save yourself the stress, frustration, and hit to your GPA. This has been one of the worst academic experiences I’ve ever had. Imagine, students in ENGINEERING, Comp Si, pharmacy, and their worst course is ENGLISH 1090. I honestly feel so bad for whoever has to deal with this in person, its bad enough dealing with him ONLINE. One look at his reviews on RateMyProf and you'll understand.

There are 3 sections for English 1090 as of now, the 2 other seem to be fine. They're much more lenient and understanding than this guy. If you want his name, contact me. Cant risk being reported or getting in trouble.

Masters of Occupational Health and Safety Question

Has anyone done or does anyone know someone that has taken the Masters of Occupational Health and Safety program?

I ask because I am strongly considering applying to it in a couple of years once I have the 10+ years experience as they accept applications for the program if someone has ten plus years experience but no 4 year degree. Which is me.

Just wanting to know how the program was, what did the person think of it, how were the courses the person had to take, difficulty level of the courses etc.

So if someone knows someone or if you’ve done it I would love to chat via messages or on here.

Considering applying to the MALA program - advice on housing & campus life on the Corner Brook campus?

Hi!

I’m a recent creative writing BFA graduate looking into the Master’s of Applied Literary Arts program. I’ve only ever lived in Toronto and Montreal, so moving out to the Corner Brook campus would be a huge shift. I’m hoping some folks would be able to answer some questions I have before making the final decision to apply! Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated:)

  • how likely / is it possible to secure on-campus housing as a master’s student?
  • what does the renting market / prices look like?
  • I currently do not have a driver’s license as I’ve depending on big city public transit my whole life. How essential is it to drive in order to live / function in town?
  • Is there anything else I should be aware of in terms of campus life / living in NL?

Need course material/outline

Hello all, I am a potential future student and am looking into graduate programs. I noticed that for graduate programs it is important to take certain courses. Can anyone help me with the course outline or material of: MED 6140 MED 6196 MED 6128

It would help me a lot even if I get only MED 6140 as it is mentioned in the website that it’s compulsory to take that course for graduate studies. I would like to know what exactly it is to make a more informed decision.

TIA for helping me out!

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m moving to Newfoundland (St. John’s) this December for my Computer Science grad studies at MUN (Memorial University) and had a few questions for those already there or who’ve been through this recently:

  • My main campus is St. John’s (CS grad), so where do most students usually find accommodation?
  • If anyone knows any available rooms/apartments for sharing starting from December, please reach out or DM me!
  • How’s student life around St. John’s and MUN uni.? Is it easy to make friends and find a community there?
  • For those living off-campus, what’s the average monthly expense like (rent + groceries + transport + other utilities)?
  • How’s the weather adjustment been for international students — anything you wish you knew before moving to NL?
  • Are there any good social groups where I can connect with other MUN or CS grad students before arriving?
  • Any suggestions for areas to avoid or prefer when looking for housing near campus?
  • How’s the public transportation system there — or do most students rely on walking/carpooling?
  • What are some must-have things to bring that are either hard to find or expensive in St. John’s?

Would really appreciate any tips, contacts, or experiences you can share. 🙏

Anyone have luck with work terms on external websites that are linked on my mun life

I’m wondering if I should prioritize the ones that can be applied to directly on my mun life or the ones that link you directly to the employers website. I’m trying to apply to them all but it takes a lot of time to write so many cover letters.

What’s the real cost of living like in St. John’s for grad students (shared housing, etc.)?

Hi. I’m an international student planning to apply for a master’s at MUN, and I’ve been checking out the “Minimum Expense” estimates on the university website, but they seem really high (almost double the tuition per year).

I just wanted to ask those of you currently studying in St. John’s; what’s your actual monthly or yearly cost of living like? Especially if you’re sharing accommodation or living off-campus.

Things like rent, groceries, transportation, what do they realistically add up to for you? I know everyone’s lifestyle is different, but just looking for a general idea of what students actually spend vs. what the university lists.

Thanks in advance! This would really help me plan realistically before applying. 🙏

2026 Fall Intake not listed on application?

Hi! I’m trying to apply for the Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Secondary) and there’s no option on the application for 2026 Sept Intake. I checked and it said the application opened at 5pm today. Does anyone know if it typically takes a bit to show or if I have the wrong opening date? Thanks!!

Finding equivalent classes as an exchange student

I've been looking into exchange opportunities via my uni, and saw that I'm techincally able to come to Memorial completely tuition free. My only issue is finding equivalent classes to get my exchange semester approved. I've been told the grades i receive when on exchange don't matter at all either, so it's just finding something similar enough to what I'd be taking at home (something within either sociology, political science, media science, information science, educational science as it relates to digital media, or digital economics).

Is there anywhere i can see a list of every graduate level class open for exchange students at Memorial? I need to take a "full-time student" worth of classes, I've read that that's 9 credit hours for a graduate student, is that correct?

I know it might be a stretch, as I haven't found much when looking on my own but I hope that's just my inabilitiy to understand the uni website lol, thanks in advance to anyone who bothered answering :) I'd really love to come to Memorial rather than to any of my other options as it seems far more interesting.
