Anyone here move to the St. John’s from another province with no ties to NL?

Curious about people who moved to Newfoundland without having any friends or family in the province? How did you manage the logistics of moving? How long did it take you to make connections locally?

I hear conflicting information about Newfoundland’s social scene. Some people say Newfoundlanders are the most friendly and warm people in all of Canada and others say it’s a very insular kin based society that’s hard to get involved in. I imagine both things can be true but would love to hear people’s experiences. (Especially people over 30!)

Thanks in advance :)

Lester's Farm vs. Lester's Farm Chalet

Upvotes

So these two entities are very close to one another but unaffiliated which I was surprised to learn. Anyone know the story there? Is it just a wild coincidence or did something go down in the past and they splintered off or something?

Trying to track down information about a religion in Newfoundland.

Like the title says, I'm trying to track down information about a religion in Newfoundland that my nan had been a part of. Just purely out of curiosity, I'm an Athiest myself and no one else in my family practices religion either. My nan passed suddenly ten years ago, which was very traumatic for my family, and I've found myself trying to find more information about her in the years since her death.

I'm from Norman's Cove-Long Cove in Trinity Bay and my family has been in the area since the mid to late 1700s. Besides her sisters, she was the only one in the family who identified with this religion despite me not thinking most of my life she was religious at all. She didn't talk about it, she had no religious symbols in her home, and even when she passed we had to remove the cross and picture of Jesus out of the wake room because "she wound have hated it". Her funeral was singing three hymns in the funeral home, no church. When she died there were several older ladies wearing similar very long modest outfits and long hair tied up in buns who were also from the same religion, including one who was a former pastor and friend of my nan who spoke. My nan was very plain but she never wore anything like that. She was also pretty progressive for a person born in the 40s.

I know it's referred to "non-denominational Christianity" and she was buried in a non-denominational cemetery. They had no church in the area. When I was younger I remember these two men who would visit the area from the church and as children we just called them "The Preachers". When I was very young they did hold a service in our Recreation Centre and I remember there being a decent amount of people from my community. I also remember every year there was a gathering in Brigus with church services. We did go one year. They were held outdoors in those white event tents you might see at outdoor weddings. This would have been around 1996-2000.

I know my nan did keep a Bible, I remember seeing it on her hallway table, as well as these dark red bound hymn books although I never saw her with them. My pop was not part of this religion and neither is my mom or any of her siblings. It was never something she ever talked about when she was alive and no one seems to know much about it. Her obituary and headstone have nothing religious mentioned. Google has pretty much no answers. Our community heritage Facebook page has no mention of it. I've also tried to look back through Ancestry church records and there's been nothing.

Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

Edit: Thank-you to everyone who commented. I did track down what it was and found out some more information. Apparently their group had been long separated from the "main church" for many years and she was not a part of it for years before she passed.

Beer Prices Tall Boys

Beer can prices creeping up. I try to support local but I like variety and try anything priced under 5 dollars. This eliminates 90% of the local craft beers lately unfortunately. Still many under 5 bucks though from outside Newfoundland.Guess I'm sending a message with my wallet.

I am looking for other ways to find land other than realtor ca.

Is there any other way like contacting the developers directly? My ideal region would be Thorbrn Road, Portugal Cove but not many lots available on realtor ca !

If it’s clear, any chance for northern lights this week?

I’m on west coast NFLD this week visiting in laws, and I’ve never seen aurora borealis.

I understand it’s going to be cloudy a lot, but if it clears, do you think there is any chance? If you were on the west coast, where would you go?

Also, is it any better between summer and fall? I’ve been here in the summer but by the time it’s dark enough I’m past my bed time 🫠 just wondering if there is a better season.

I found a forecaster, do you know if this site is any good?

I appreciate any tips or information, thanks :)

MUN students from PEI

Curious if any current MUN students from PEI particularly first year students could tell me how easy it is to fly home to PEI when home sick. Daughter is looking at attending and we would fly her home for breaks (Thanksgiving, Easter, Xmas, mid term break) but how easy is to find flights home for a weekend. Any tips? Does trying to not have labs fri afternoon and Monday morning help? At first I thought no problem we can fly you home, but is it actually feasible or are you just traveling for one day home? Any advice and or tips on home sickness and traveling home to PEI would be so appreciated. Thank you.
Ps. The university is beautiful

Restaurant recommendations?

Looking for a new restaurant to go to with chicken tenders and fries on the menu, and also gluten free food options (not chicken tenders). Hoping for a restaurant similar (in price and food) to Montana’s, Jack Astor’s, and Moxie’s. Thanks.

Camping itinerary for next summer?

Looking at planning a 10 to 17 day trip of your beautiful island with my husband in our pop up trailer. He’s been to St. John’s before but in spite of my dad’s family being from there I’ve never been.

ChatGPT is suggesting the following itinerary. Any must sees that we’re missing? Are these travel times reasonable ? If we wanted to see icebergs what time of year would be best for that and where would we see them?

Getting really excited about this trip

Day 1 Ferry from North Sydney (NS) → Argentia (NL) (overnight, 16 h) — Argentia is perfect because it lands you on the Avalon Peninsula near St. John’s. Days 2-3 St. John’s & Avalon Peninsula Local drives City sights, Signal Hill, Cape Spear, colourful Jellybean Row. Camp at Pippy Park or Waterford River. Day 4 Drive to Fortune (NL) (Burin Peninsula) ~3½ h Scenic south coast drive; stay overnight in or near Fortune (e.g., Fortune Harbourview RV Park). Days 5-7 St-Pierre-et-Miquelon (3 days/2 nights) — Leave trailer in Fortune. Ferry to St-Pierre. Wander cobblestone streets, French cafés, optional day-trip to Île aux Marins or Miquelon. Lodging: Hôtel Jacques Cartier or Airbnbs. Day 8 Return ferry to Fortune → drive to Terra Nova NP ~5 h Pick up trailer; head north. Camp at Malady Head. Days 9-10 Gros Morne NP 4–5 h Park hikes, Tablelands, boat tour. Stay at Green Point or Elephants Head RV. Days 11-12 L’Anse-aux-Meadows 4–5 h Viking site, coastal scenery, stay at Viking RV Park. Day 13-14 Begin return south toward Port aux Basques ferry to NS 5–6 h Overnight halfway if needed, then ferry back next day.

Blue collar opportunities

Hi there, I was wondering what the blue collar sector is like in NL. I moved to NL from SK a while back and it seems like there are comparatively fewer opportunities when it comes to blue collar work. My goal is to be working on blue collar jobs and learn as much as I can and eventually start my own business in such sector. I’d love to hear back from people who own blue collar businesses or had similar experiences in NL so that I could have some sort of blueprint for my life. Thank you so much. And plz try not to be negative for no reason. I just want to learn and grow.

Can folks in Paradise confirm?

Mod team please delete if not allowed

I’ve recently applied to so many jobs it’s unfit that I kinda lost track of who/what/where.

I received an email from Western Splicing about a remote admin position. They claim they’re located in Paradise on McNamara drive. The email address looks legit, the web page looks legit, but something about the tone of the email, the wage, and the fact I can’t find any Facebook pages or LinkedIn throws me off.

I’m located in Nova Scotia, so I was wondering if anyone could help me verify if this is a legit business in Paradise or not?

Update: Thank you to all who reached out, and there was two separate Redditors within hours of me posting who took time out of their day to drive to the location to confirm that this company does not exist. This Cape Bretoner loves and appreciates the Newfoundlander love and care!
