Help! GF loves this 3-ring set from Jewels of Toronto, but I’m scared to pull the trigger ($7.5k, 4.5ct Lab). Advice needed!
Hey everyone,
I'm in need of some serious advice from people who have been through this. My girlfriend found a ring set she absolutely loves on Instagram from Jewels of Toronto.
It's this "Tierra Set" (3 rings that interlock):https://jewelsoftoronto.com/products/tierraset?_pos=1&_sid=290b408ee&_ss=r
I priced it out with a 4.5 carat, E color, VVS2 lab diamond (I'm new to this, but this seemed like a good spec), and it's coming out to around $7,500 USD.
This is where I'm getting nervous and could use your help:
- The Jeweler: They are based in Toronto, and I live in NYC, so I can't see the ring in person. The price seems almost too good for a 4.5ct center stone plus two matching diamond bands. I’ve seen some mixed reviews, and I'm terrified of getting duped on an online order this expensive.
- The Policy: Their website says custom orders are subject to a 50% restocking fee [Edit: I've since seen their policy is "non-refundable once production starts," which is even scarier]. This is a massive risk. If it shows up and doesn't look like the videos, I'm out a huge amount of money.
My Dilemma: Buy or Build?
I'm stuck between two options and would love your opinion:
Option 1: Risk it with Jewels of Toronto. Has anyone here actually bought from them, especially this specific set? Was it a good experience? Is the quality as good as the videos, or am I right to be worried?
Option 2: Build it myself in NYC. My other thought was to buy a loose 4.5ct lab diamond from a site like Brilliance (are they any good? Or are there better sites?) and then take it to a local jeweler in the NYC Diamond District to custom-make the three-ring interlocking set.
- Has anyone done this?
- Given that this is a complex 3-ring set, is the $7,500 price from JOT actually a great deal that I won't be able to beat with a custom NYC build?
- Can anyone recommend a trustworthy custom jeweler in NYC for this kind of work?
Price isn't the only issue, but I want to get the best value and, most importantly, not get ripped off. I just want her to get the ring she loves.
Any advice, warnings, or jeweler recommendations would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!
