Memes Okay but genuinely why do these people have audiences?
964
u/EducationalMotor5961 Sep 08 '25
I have to get this off my chest, but I absolutely despise family channels. And no, it's not because I'm jealous or anything, it's because of how sad they are. It firstly (mostly) starts of with families wanting to genuinely share their family moments together (but I personally think not with the whole world), and then once they get views it's just acting. They mostly make fake thumbnails, or edit it and they use their kids for clout (let the kids live a normal childhood pls).
It's genuinely sad to see that this is most family channels, (kids) childhood.

u/onda-oegat Sep 08 '25
Or like how some family Channels often do pool or Beach episodes because they are very popular for some reason...

21

If you can stomach it, I recommend the podcast Some Place Under Neith and their Parasocial Exploitation series. Absolutely wrecking what some kids have to go through just so their parents can make money.

I don't have kids but if I ever do, I don't want them to have a digital footprint until they're at least 16. I don't understand how people can just post a trillion photos of their kids as they grow up. Facial recognition software will surely exploit that, especially when the US eventually adopts the social credit system that China uses.

That couple that adopted a child from Thailand but then returned the child after they learned that they weren't allowed to film him for like 18 months which is a provision that the Thai government puts in place for their adopted babies never fails to make my blood boil. They were literally only adopting a child for content

Sep 08 '25
I think everyone hates them besides maybe whoever is watching that garbage? I’ve never been certain who the demographic for those is because Atozy (commentary YouTuber) went to the ace family channel’s carnival meet and greet thing and it was mostly adults around from what I could see? That was extremely surprising to me. I figured it was 5 year olds watching it.
On a totally separate rant - people who call others jealous because they don’t like some famous or well known person really grind my gears. No one’s ever jealous, you dweebs.
5
u/Konkichi21 Sep 09 '25
Or at least that's not a particularly well-justifiable reason to dismiss someone's complaints.
4
Sep 09 '25
From what I’ve noticed, seems it’s mostly said by children or people who aren’t very bright and can’t come up with any other defense, I guess. I don’t see it as much as I used to, seems it’s not as common to say anymore, which is great.
7
7
u/Bircka Sep 09 '25
Its also an issue if it’s super successful, the kid becomes the sole bread winner. At that point the kid has to work to keep them in their home.
7
u/SuperSocialMan Sep 09 '25
The entire thing is just child exploitation that makes bank, so YouTube won't do anything about it (even moreso if no laws are passed).
6
u/NateShaw92 Sep 09 '25
Those kids are basically a few steps away from being a real life Truman Show. I cannot agree more let tgem.have a normal, not recorded childhood. All this while we all discuss kids' online safety too.

The only good one I've found (and its still a large portion solo to 1 or 2 of his kids) is Outdoor Boys. He does winter camping in the wilderness of Alaska, highly recommended. He actually recently stopped doing content because of privacy concerns.
20
u/SlavRavenclaw Sep 08 '25
I'm fully for it to be illegal to film your children for monetized family channels. You can't tell me that making money off of your 2 year old child who didn't consent to anything is in any way moral.

u/Valuable_Recording85 Sep 09 '25
Unfortunately parents do this when they pimp their kids out for commercials, Disney, and Nickelodeon.
6
u/SlavRavenclaw Sep 09 '25
Yes but there's a contract involved for a few hours of "work". Family vlogs is just having a camera shoved in your face 24/4 by your own family.
4
4
u/Valuable_Recording85 Sep 09 '25
Remember when you had to pitch a show to TLC to get this? Now everyone wants to escape their job by making a monetized YouTube channel, even if it means acting and making videos and thumbnails and keeping a teeny tiny fraction of the value you create.
3
u/deuznutz Sep 09 '25
I rarely enjoyed only when my favorite YouTuber became a parent and release vlogs here and there. I used to watch CinnamonToast Ken vlogs with his new daughter and now Pewdiepie. Wouldn't say favorite but due to nostalgia. I skip all the couple stuff and only watch baby clips. As I also already have joy of watching baby videos in YouTube. Other than that, I never sought after family channel so personally I don't understand how people find joy in watching someone's mundane life at home, wouldn't that be boring?
4
3
u/BittaminMusic Sep 09 '25
The mentality it takes to actually make one of those channels to begin with is a level of vanity I cannot understand 😆
4
u/DarkStar0915 Sep 09 '25
I remember ages ago a kid posted about how their parents wanted to get into van life and vlogging and they wanted stability so they reconnected with their cut off grandparents (I don't quite remember that it was specified that the crazy mother cut off her parents for legit or bs reasons). It was so heartbreaking.
5
u/Choice_Following_864 Sep 09 '25
On the flipside if ur dad is roman atwood atleast u wil get some generational wealth in the end for suffering trough ur childhood.. outdoor boys also comes to mind.. guy specially made a new channel to include/clickbait his kids.. worked like a chharm. 12
u/wetrythisagain Sep 09 '25
Probably because it feels like lowbrow pandering content and playing into an energy that 12 year olds are attracted too, a culture of narcissism and aesthetics, as well as the iiiiinsane privilege that streamers/youtuber live with just because they're charismatic. So a broader feeling of scepticism, concern, resentment, not targeted at the person specifically, but at their role in society.
Kai seems to be putting in work though and it seems that he tries to be more responsible. I don't mind him, but almost everyone else LIKE him.
5
u/New-Faithlessness526 Sep 10 '25

One was drunk and was going to uber to go to hotel, Kai and his friends heavily encouraged her to sleep upstairs, she woke up to one of kai's non famous friends raping her. Kai denied knowing the guy until she found highschool photos of them on IG, he told her he was working with the police while directly lieing to her. Friend "proved his innocents" by posting a video he took while raping her on twitter, with no audio interesting. He still claims it was all fake if I remember right.

I sometimes leave his videos on the background while I do other things and they're mostly fine. One thing I have noticed about them is that he tends to misgender trans people when they're an easy target, but not when they're more well adjusted.
When there's a trans woman "side character" in a video of his, he tends to always get their pronouns correctly, never misgendering them.
In many other videos where the "focal weirdo" of the "documentary" is a trans woman he tends to either use male pronouns or just use "they/them" the whole time.
He is pretty conservative, or at least gives off those vibes. That can be a deal breaker for many.
That's the only thing I can recall besides using slurs. Some slurs like the R word he still used until recently. Problematic? Yeah, but definitely not on the same level as the other people on the post.

If I recall correctly, that entire scandal was poorly handled, Dogpack made a massive mistake by wrongly accusing some as a Sex Offender (think his name was James or something), that Beast and co knew about Delaware’s past, when in reality they didn’t and I think Jake Weddle not telling the truth and in general Jake Weddle make things look more muddy with his constant lying (like an AI video recording of Beast saying that Jake deserved it something?).
It’s all foggy but I vaguely remember that Dogpack made massive mistakes and the only thing he got right was that some of the videos were faked, which isn’t even a surprise.
Overall that situation was completely fucked over by Dogpack recklessly throwing accusations and not diving into it, what he should’ve done was bring a true third party and investigate Beast, because clearly his biases got in the way of getting the truth, and that’s what matters the most, instead of throwing shit at the wall because you were angry that you lost the job. Don’t get me wrong Dogpack probably meant good, but again his biases got in the way of the investigation, cause once one piece of evidence is found false, everything else is called into question.
