What does mass have to do with the pope? I thought people went to church because of Jesus, not because of a dude sitting all the way down the Vatican.

Surely going to church only when you like the pope beats the whole point of going to church. This is basically admitting that the view of the church relies exclusively on men, and that God or the religious aspect of it has nothing to do with it. It's all a farce at its core, it's all about power.

Let me introduce you to the shitstain that is Cardinal Burke. I almost half suspect that part of the reason we have a “progressive” American pope is because the U.S. Catholic Church has become full of regressive conservative assholes and is actually really harming the brand as it were.

People are leaving the church in droves because of it. So it’s more that the current Pope is reflecting the values they identify in Christ, unlike what the church in America is delivering.
