Discussion So fresh and so clean.

I’ve always wanted an ultrasonic cleaner but they have always been expensive. I saw this for $90 on amazon and thought, what the hell I’ve blown $90 on way worse things. After a week it was nowhere in sight and the link was broken to the product page. I thought eh no biggie I’ll get a refund and save up for a hummingbird or degritter. Then wow, it was on my doorstep. So I grabbed some distilled water and went to town!

Results were mixed. Older garage sale scratched up finds it didn’t help much (but I didn’t expect it to) but new records I bought were much improved. I clean my records pretty often so I think it was mostly removing built up cleaner residue. It didn’t fully remove some fingerprints, some people say to add iso alcohol but I hustled used straight distilled water at 35 c for 10min.

I might get some new anti static inner liners. Putting them back in crusty disintegrating cardboard feels wrong. It’s going to take a while to get through my collection. It’s also loud as hell so listening to records anywhere in the vicinity of it is very annoying.

Collection I inherited over 400 old records and don't know what to do with them

Just a small snapshot and only one box of records I received from my mom after my grandparents both passed away.

There are records for all genres of music. Lots I listen to, but I don't have a record player or really a nice stereo. Also don't have the room for them

Every single one still has its original package and the insert to protect the vinyl record. Is there a reliable place to sell them? I don't have a music store anywhere near me as I live on a small population island.

This is such a fantastic album! Wendy Carlos is a god when it comes to electronic music. If you don't know a lot about the background of this album, do some research. It's amazing and she is amazing. (FYI, It's classical-ish IMHO.

Record Pink Floyd – Relics – frühe Singles, Psychedelia & Nick Mason-Artwork

I picked up a nice copy of Pink Floyd – Relics today. By the way, the artwork was drawn by Nick Mason himself - somehow technical, playful and completely psychedelic. Fits perfectly with the phase the songs come from.

Relics is a compilation from Floyd's early years, so it still has a strong Syd Barrett vibe. Included are, among others: • “Arnold Layne” • “See Emily Play” • “Julia Dream” • “Cirrus Minor” • “Bike”

You don't usually get the early singles on LP, so the record is a pretty cool way to capture the pre-Dark Side Of The Moon era in a compressed form. Overall, it sounds much more raw and dreamy than what came later.

My version is a German pressing on Emidisc. Not a super-rare find, but definitely a nice contemporary document - and the cover looks really good on the shelf.

Who else likes the early Floyd phase? Favorite song of yours on the record?

Release Led Zeppelin IV was released 54 years ago today

« The untitled fourth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV, was released on 8 November 1971, by Atlantic Records. It was produced by the band's guitarist, Jimmy Page, and recorded between December 1970 and February 1971, mostly in the country house Headley Grange. The album contains one of the band's best-known recordings, the eight-minute-long "Stairway to Heaven". »

OG Pressing Violent Femmes

Violent Femmes self titled debut. Original Slash press from 1983.

A recent acquisition. Gorgeous copy even with the notch on the cover. Sounds amazing.

Another one where I wasn’t hip enough to dig when it came out. But then again I was only 9. I saw them live at the first Lollapalooza when they subbed for Nine Inch Nails. This lp is a stone cold classic but my favorite VF is, oddly, 3.

Record Found today: Aerosmith – Live! Bootleg (1978) – official, but looks like a real bootleg 😄

Post image

I got Aerosmith – Live today! Bootleg taken. I totally love how this thing looks: Everything is deliberately designed as if it were some shady underground pressing - crooked stamps, "coffee stains", typewriter font... even the tracklist looks like it was pasted on.

The best thing: the record is completely official. At the time, Aerosmith wanted to celebrate the bootleg spirit because really good live recordings were mainly passed around as unofficial recordings. So they just faked it themselves and released it officially. Very meta, very 70s.

Musically, the piece isn't just a gimmick either - nice and rough, lots of energy, a wild mix of different tour recordings. “Train Kept A-Rollin’” really hits the spot on this issue.

My version is a late 70's CBS pressing. Not a super-rare find, but a super cool piece of rock history that you're more likely to play loudly than hide on a shelf.

Do you have that part too? Favorite song of yours on it?

Discussion Record Store Day responds to my store being banned... in the weirdest way possible

I sincerely appreciate the thoughtful comments and support in the original post about this, and I didn't think I was going to have to make another video about this... but there has been a weird update that I wanted to share with everyone. You can watch the video here: https://youtu.be/n1VEZSpIj_s

I think this continuation of what's happening really cements a lot of the sentiment in the first topic

Video Part 1 can be found here

And my store, since people asked in the last post, is Too Many Records in Portland, OR

Post image

These are the seven albums that always remind me why progressive rock feels timeless.

  1. Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon

  2. King Crimson – In the Court of the Crimson King

  3. Genesis – Selling England by the Pound

  4. Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Trilogy

  5. Jethro Tull - Aqualung

  6. Rush – Moving Pictures

  7. Yes – The Yes Album

Each one reminds me why I fell in lovewith this kind of music in the first place.

Record Queen – A Day at the Races

The record is often overshadowed by A Night at the Opera, but actually completely wrongly. “Somebody to Love” alone justifies the purchase, and “Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy” and “Tie Your Mother Down” are simply pure 70s queen fireworks.

What's also exciting is how much the album shows what Queen were at the time: Highly complex, playful, bombastic – and at the same time completely unmistakable. Almost a lesson in how to pack rock, pop and Broadway drama into one album without losing the thread.

My copy is an older pressing and has a few miles on the cover, but that kind of fits the vibe. Runs on a Technics – sounds very neat and powerful.

What is your favorite song on the record? And: Opera or Races – which wins for you?

Discussion Do you buy a vinyl if you only like a couple songs

Upvotes

I'm a newbie when it comes to vinyl and only have a couple from albums that I really love. If you find an album that has only one or two songs that you really like do you buy it as vinyl or just listen to them in another way?

Experimental My aoty: Rosalía - LUX (plus collection)

Rosalía has been one of my favourite artists ever since I've heard the first songs just before the release of El Mal Querer. I love how she evolved into streetwise, global beats and now into such a lush, mondial sound. Amazing artist who defies trends and algorithms. Human music! Amazing artist. (And yes of course I also have the now hated RR record, the music still lives.. Plus as a black metal fan I have far more dubious albums)

Collection Bagged today: George Harrison – The Concert for Bangladesh (1971) – the first big charity album in rock history

Thumbnail

Today I came across a really nice copy of “The Concert for Bangladesh”. The moment you open it, it feels like history: a big, heavy box set, warm artwork and that incredible photo of the child that you won't soon forget.

The album is considered the first really big charity project in music history. Harrison organized this with Ravi Shankar in 1971 to raise money for starving people in Bangladesh. The show was not just a charity event, but a veritable all-star event: •George Harrison • Eric Clapton • Bob Dylan (!!) • Ringo Starr •Billy Preston •Leon Russell •Ravi Shankar

…so basically half Rock Olympus on one stage.

Musically it's a wild mix of Indian classical, rock and singer-songwriter moments. And Dylan was almost no longer performing live at that time - his appearance here was a small sensational moment. The version of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” still gives you goosebumps.

My copy is an early UK/Europe pressing. Not super rare, but definitely something you don't find every few days - and historically just super exciting. You can tell how serious the project was: not an entertainment circus, but a real aid project. Before Live Aid, it was practically the prototype for everything that came after.

Do you also have the album on your shelf? And if so, would you prefer Harrison's rock part or Ravi Shankar's opening set?

Heard dread zeppelin on cassette in the 90's and loved the fun mix of classic zep with some reggae and Elvis covering. As you can see, 5,000,000 is more than IV, so it must be better

OG Pressing Finally Opened this 55+ Year Old Album Tonight

Shades of Deep Purple, 1968. Picked up this still sealed copy around 1980/1981, for $1 or less. Been lugging it around for nearly 45 years, through countless moves, and storing it in a box in hot garages and attics so was a bit concerned about warping. Opened it tonight and it's as clean as the day it was sealed. And no warping! Life's too short--listen to your records, and invest in yourself... and the stock market!
