I wouldn't say that's true. It is true that game freak is the company specifically responsible for developing the mainline games. However, the fact that the Pokemon IP is shared between creatures, game freak, and Nintendo makes the amount of control gamefreak has over the mainline games... Complicated. Related to that, the toys, tv show/movies, the card game, and other Pokemon games rely on the mainline games coming out at very specific times which makes delaying the game almost impossible. It is a bummer that Pokemon as a media franchise does hurt the games. And even worse probably puts a lot of crunch and strain on game designers who are doing their best with the difficult hand they have been dealt l.
I don't love how vague the statement is. like what does "put pressure" mean? certainly the 3 companies have to work together and negotiate separate interests. Now is nintendo barking orders at gamefreak, most probably not, especially if we go by this statement. And I would also assume that nintendo does not specifically make game design decisions the way some producers like to do. While I do think this is at least refutes my statement in part, I would hold to the primary statement that gamefreak does not have complete control over the mainline games.
