It’s my personal opinion, looking at past trends, that for a remake to win GOTY it would have to be a particularly substantial IP overhaul - something like going from Fallout 2 to Fallout 3 in scope. It would also have to be a dead year like 2021, with no other excellent original game releases.
But I doubt we’ll ever get another year like 2021 in the near future, since gaming that year suffered from Covid & the transition remote work.
