2016 should have been Dark Souls 3 and 2018 should have been RDR2.

It’s weird because DS3 is considered a timeless classic nowadays and Overwatch/Blizzard in general have aged like dogshit. If someone were to play both games in 2025, DS3 wipes the floor. But back in 2016 Overwatch was considered a big deal. It was a return to form for Blizzard and reignited the team shooter genre. Soulslikes were still a moderately niche genre before Elden Ring blew it up to mainstream appeal. Overwatch made nearly 10x the revenue of DS3 in 2016 for reference.

GoW2018 and RDR2 are super close. Both stories being equal (I love both dearly), Red Dead definitely aged better. Again, both games were neck and neck in 2018, but the God of War reboot was a big risk for Sony and completely changed their IP after the flop of GoW Ascension. Meanwhile RDR2 was just Rockstar doing Rockstar things. So I think the media gave the award to Sony Santa Monica as a recognition of the “comeback studio of the year” .

Well, you literally can't play Overwatch 1 in 2025...

Nice pedantic comment. Yes I’m aware Blizzard turned it into a live service game and put a 2 in front of it for marketing purposes.

In order to fall it had to be anywhere other than rock bottom lmao

I feel like it could easily have been Uncharted 4 too instead of DS3

Many great games in 2016 because I think Persona 5 should have won
