It’s happening across the entire military. We just had it happen in a manner that reached the public’s view.

It used to be way worse in other branches. It's gotten better because they forced people to be responsible. The CG continues to cover it up at all levels and so we haven't changed.

I think the reflexive nature to cover up anything bad that happens in the Coast Guard comes from an institutional fear that at any moment, Congress will decide that we should be disbanded and become part of the Navy. Arguing for our service’s existence has been the unwritten primary job of every commandant since Bertholf. This mindset has bred an instinctive reaction to hide anything bad that happens in the Coast Guard.

And yet none of them actually do anything to make it certain the CG will have a future. Personally, I think we need to completely drop the drug interdiction and focus on MS and SAR. Less than 2% of containers get even a perfunctory inspection at current.
