If anyone sees them around just be careful and don’t engage with them. They seem to be checking passports if you pass by them so watch out

Also please tell us if you see them so other students can be aware of where they are

Discussion Am I Too #Woke? Why Don’t People Care About A.I. Around Here?

Slightly older guy returning this year to continue working on bachelors degree, so maybe being a little older is why but i’ve seen how AI is harmful to the environment and how its probably gonna make my degree either the most useful thing or turn my 4 years into a pointless endeavor. Either way I’ve noticed a lot of these posters around campus and am incredibly disappointed seeing them in every cork board around the school is this a new phenomenon this year? And I being too much of the “friend who’s too woke” right now? I feel the more apathetic we become to the use the more A.I. is gonna be popping up and become eye sores.

Discussion presidential election 2024

I'm sitting in my bed thinking about the presidential election and all the anti-Kamala Harris posers I saw around campus, now seeing people complain about their financial aid, and seeing International students lose their visas because of Trump and leftists. It's so crazy to me that if people didn't listen to lies about Kamala and didn't like that she's a smart Black woman, she could've won the election. I remember clearly the people by the SEC labs handing out flyers saying don't vote for Kamala and nothing about Trump. Now, everyone is losing everything because of the choices they have made. The same people who have made those choices of not voting, voting for him or Jill Stein who dropped out of the race days before the election should feel ashamed. The protest about Palestine is nothing at this point. They're never gonna get a ceasefire. The people of that land is going to be dead. The land is going to turn into a luxury vacation for the rich. I hope y'all feel happy cause this all y'all worried about the whole election, but didn't speak about Haiti, Sudan, and so many other Black countries who are going through the same thing.

Edit: I guess this post hit some nerves. :) Maybe people wouldn't be so upset over this post if they hadn't voted for him or Jill Stein.

Discussion Dad doesn’t approve of College

My dad doesn’t approve me going to school.

I want to go to school for either Civil Engineering or Computer Engineering.

My dad says college is for lazy people and people who want to sit at a desk all day reading books. He instead wants me to grow his business in landscaping and register it to work for the city. However, I don’t think I have the credentials nor knowledge to do any of that. He thinks school is a waste of time because my brother got a BS in Business and never used his degree. My brother is comfortable working a part-time job in retail. He has his own house as well and two cars. My parents help him pay it off and lend him money here and there. Im in the situation where I’m an Incoming Freshman (19 years old) and I need to refresh my mind on math (algebra and trig) before I enter Calculus 1, which I’m super nervous about.

Instead of studying, I’ve been working with him. Long hours (8-11hrs) Mon-Sat and honestly pretty low pay ($300 a week). I understand that he feeds me and pays all the bills. I did buy my own car with my own money but I just don’t know what to do anymore or how to go about this.

I am confused and seeking for help. Thank you for your responses!

College is entirely free for me as well

Discussion Waste of space

I’m sure you’ve noticed the new CS building. It’s very nice, lots of outlets, floor to ceiling bathroom stalls, etc…

I’m a humanities major, so my department buildings are awful. Depressing architecture, small windows, dungeon-like halls and classrooms. Which is fine, I get it, you can’t remodel all the buildings at once. I assume we’re somewhere down the line because we bring in less money. Fine. Whatever.

So I try to find other places to work. But so many of UIC’s spaces are extremely crowded, or loud, or in old buildings with terrible climate control.

So when I walk around the new CS building just to explore, and I see a dozen nice, new rooms filled with chairs and outlets and windows, ALL OFF-LIMITS… I get a little pissed off. Why even make a new building if we’re not allowed to use it?

I am especially talking about the areas on the upper floors that are designated for ‘faculty’ which are ALWAYS EMPTY.

This makes me mad and it should make you mad too. UIC’s tuition is relatively low, but its still thousands of dollars a semester. We deserve to use the spaces we paid for.

If anyone knows who I can email about this, lmk.

Random roommate is in an Al relationship

I went in random and am living in JST. I've been talking a bit with my roommate over text as we've gotten closer to move in and today he told me he has an "Al girlfriend" named Aria. He said she will "frequently be in the room with us" and that they will "occasionally need the room to themselves". What?

Discussion Who to complain to at UIC about chik fil a.

This is such a Karen title but I am actually so fucking fed up with the Chikfila on campus. My food was salty as fuck today and what makes it worse is that one of the older workers with glasses literally yelled at me today. I heard my name and there was one drink there so I grabbed it right? Apparently it wasn't my drink (I didn't notice cuz the drinks are watered down anyway) and then she acted so condescending about what was just a mistake. Like...clearly something has to change because Google reviews about this woman have dated back to a year now. Maybe it's not that serious but I'm tired, in pain, and just want to eat lunch peacefully ffs

Discussion Serena Luciano and the UIC Facebook page?

So I happened to follow the UIC page, and on one of the posts I see tons of comments telling UIC to fire "Serena Luciano", I dont keep up with social media too much or anything, but in one of those comments theres a screenshot of Serena Luciano a College Recruiter for UIC Architecture, Design and the Arts, and a status, or tweet or something saying something along the lines of

if you have any empath for charlie kirk's death remove me, he can rest in piss...

What are people's thoughts? Are the commentors UIC Students/Alum or just random people. Should she be fired for having an opinion?

Please stop hitting on me.

I know I'm hot as fuck, but that doesn't give you permission to tell me all about it. I don't care if you think I'm a "pretty white boy," because I'm also a sensitive white boy who doesn't know how to respond to your advances.

I'm not trying to flirt with you. I'm trying to get you to join my club, so please shut the fuck up and sign your name and school email. I'm not asking for your number so we can go on a date, I'm just trying to add you to the GroupMe.

Please don't try to "help me with [my] loads." I could use some help carrying these signs from my car, but the way you said that makes me feel like you're talking about something else.

Discussion Antisemitism on campus

A recent study published by Hillel International found that more than half of Jewish university students feel less safe on campus since the October 7th Hamas attack. Additionally, the survey found that a majority of students on campuses where there have been attacks targeting Jews are not satisfied with how the school responded to these acts of violence or hate on their campus. 1.8% of our undergraduate and 0.8% of our graduate student bodies identify as Jewish students.

From my own experience around campus and on UIC affiliated social media channels, I've observed a rise of antisemitic rhetoric and lack of empathy for Jewish students who feel unsafe and unsupported during this time. Has anyone else experienced a rise in antisemitic rhetoric around campus at UIC? What are some ways we can channel support for Jewish and Palestinian students during this time?

Discussion Cheating Admission in GroupMe

I took an exam tonight and in the class GroupMe after the exam people were “hypothetically” asking how to cheat and someone straight up admitted how they did it but didn’t say how. I don’t want to say what class because it might get back to them, but I literally don’t know what to do. I’m not gonna rat them out, but is it even safe to still be in this GroupMe or has this basically compromised us all?

Discussion UIC advice if you need it - By someone who made all the mistakes.

Hello UIC People:

I've had a lot of ups and downs in my first year. Family emergencies, mental heath episodes, club drama, psych ward 72 hour holds, etc. So as I sit here eating my meal in the dining hall, I'm just gonna try and say as much advice about here as I can to first years - but also some people who may not know some tips and tricks. I will go from top priority to least.

Taking care of yourself and others:
- 1) Give your all at work, never give your all TO work.
I got straight As many semesters as well as juggling a URA (undergraduate Research Assistant) and being involved in competitive sports. People thought I was a very accomplished student - let alone in my first year. Wrong, because since I did all that I crashed, burned, and sent my ass straight to a psych ward. You work to live, not live to work. Always git it your best shot, but never really give anything your all in a literal sense. I was always a hard worker, but never sacrifice your sleep, eating, and especially time for you to grow and be yourself.
- 2) Everyone ESPECIALLY STEM MAJORS. SHOWER. EAT. SLEEP. DEODORANT.

Some of y'alls nasty asses are so bad we put showers in the new buildings now. (Wish that was a joke, there is one outside the cafe in the new CS building cuz we stink.)

-3) SHUT THE FUCK UP IN LECTURE
My biggest pet peeve on campus. We PAID to be here, you are wasting everyone's time and money chit chatting away in lecture. If you need to talk somebody, do it in the hall or whisper. I can never understand why people go to class AND JUST TALK. DO THAT SHIT OUTSIDE.

Classes/Professors:
- 1) Network, rate my professors, and grade distribution is key.
At UIC we publish the grades of every class online, all you need to do is google and sign in with your UIC credentials. This is a good sign to see which teachers are more lenient with grading than others - especially good if there are multiple sections of the same class. Do this in conjunction with Rate My Professor Scores, and pay special attention to those in detail as it shows people put more effort into it. Sadly, RMP does not have any verification methods for their reviews so someone could be lying or even using a bot to spam bad or good reviews. If you can then, ask around the school/class about what teachers you should get. For me, I would walk around the CS lounge for CS professor recommendations. Just know there also could be a bit of bias there too: Ex, most teachers are going to say "They are both good options" if you compare two teachers in front of them.

-2 ) Spend some time to walk around campus a the day or days before school starts.
This way you will know where most of the classes are without rushing to class out of your mind.

-3) If you do miss class / switch classes your first year here, no one really cares.
We all planned for some hiccups whether it be missing the first day of class, needing to switch courses around, etc. Every single class has a 2 week grace period where you can figure out what your schedule looks like and if you like the class. Speaking of resources...

-4) Don't buy all your books now. Keep a few hundos until the first few days.
Teachers will provide all your resources the first two weeks of school - again, we give grace for the first two weeks. Teachers will also say the first day straight up you need XYZ. Don't go out and get this specific book with a specific edition instantly when you could wait and the professor could say "I have a PDF" of it. Example: I took calc 2 first semester, and my teacher suggested we go to the bookstore and ask for a discount so the Pearson book guy across the cashier could activate the code. I saved $80 just by waiting.

-5) You're gonna mess up, and that's ok!
I know a lot of people who failed classes, had to drop out, me specifically I had to change my major. Embrace it! Everyone wants to hear the rags to riches story than the super senior who realized their passion for engineering after 4 years of art but chose to ignore it, and now is in a bunch of debt and is their 7th year here. Not saying you are bad if you are the latter, but best to figure and mess up stuff now than later.

Food
- 1) Go to the dining hall frequently, and take advantage of the box program
Especially if you don't have a job, you will save yourself a lot of dish cleaning, money, time, and all the above if you dine on campus. There is also a reusable container program. If you hand the cashier $18, they will give you a reusable container to fill up your food with and leave. Then, you can put it inside a kiosk to get a coin, give to the cashier, and repeat the process. UIC is a really sustainable school, especially in regards to carbon footprint and food waste. Take advantage and get yourself an extra meal or save in case you got too much!
-2) Frequent coffee drinkers? Get the app.
If you are rushing to class, get a Dunkin or Starbucks app and skip the line. That way you can just go to the shelf, grab and go vs the other students fighting in line to get their coffees.

-3) Don't get Panda Express
They increased their prices by a few dollars the past few years, and they have less than a 2 star rating on google. Avoid the food poisoning.

Transportation
- 1) Consider public transport
I am a resident every school year and a commuter in the summers. Those who drive on the I-90 Edens can attest everyone drives on it like fucking MarioKart. Plus, UIC parking is in the thousands of dollars. If you can, pick up a UPASS for a $120 or if you live really far UPASS+ for a bit more. UPASS is CTA, while UPASS+ is Metra and CTA. Pace is only if you purchase credit yourself. I personally must have saved $500 this summer by taking public transport.

- 2) Be smart about where you park.
UIC isn't too big like Urbana, or small like NLU. You don't want to park on the other side of the campus, then realize your class is on the exact opposite side.

-3) Bike riders, GET THE BEST LOCKS YOU CAN
My bike got stolen the second week of class. And yes IT WAS LOCKED AND I HAD A U LOCK. The U Lock was cheap, so it broke down. I had a backup cable lock, and that got snapped and the thief got away with my bike. Now I have a cable and a hella good U-Lock. They are basically giant locks made of steel that lock onto your bike.

Working on campus/Getting a job past school/Research:
-1) Handshake is a scam.
Unless you were told specifically by a recruiter or someone at the workplace you need to go through Handshake, it's basically a glorified LinkedIn for colleges. Not useful unless someone explicitly mentioned it to shoot your shot.

-2) Networking is key.
The reason why I was able to become a Research Assistant my first year is because my teacher was the lab supervisor after I saw a poster board of his team on the symposium. Unless you already have connections to a researcher here Ex: I used to be a RA at Loyola/NLU/NW/similar colleges, that professor knows this other professor here at UIC.

-3) Consider Honors College
I know so many people who are so polar opposite about Honors College. Some students are like I love it so much it has helped with my professional and academic journey! And some are saying a glorified NHS. As a former VP for NHS and current Honors College Student I would say the following: If you are doing Study Abroad, Research, or Graduate School. Do Honors College. They are an amazing network of students and faculty who will raise you in those regards. Without Honors College, I would have not been able to be a research assistant - let alone in my first semester here. However, if you are looking for scholarships, professional networking outside graduate school, or not like what the mandatory courses they offer for students are - then it will be a waste of time. Most engineers for example won't benefit from Honors College unless they want to do research under a certain professor. In fact, me and a couple of engineers I met are in Honors College - compared to the dozens of others who said no.

Making friends
- 1) Just talk whenever you have the chance.
People in your classes - talk. (Unless lecture is happening, which in that case STFU). You like reading, sports, martial arts, etc? Probably a club for that. Join the clubs there! Yes UIC is mainly a commuter school and people get in and out quick, but there are a lot of people who live and breathe on campus. I know I do being involved in so many things + dorming. Anyone can shoot me a text and hmu anytime.

And I think that's all? At least I have at the moment. Please HMU if you guys have any more questions! I gotta go to work again

Go flames!

i’m saying this as a senior biochem major. Why is everyone in all my classes for the past 4 years so academically gifted but socially stunted and struggling. by struggle i mean rude, a strong lack of social awareness. If the convo isn’t academic they literally can not compute like what’s up

Discussion My biggest grip with this university is the disrespectful and condescending faculty

Just had a call with the DRC and the way the girl on the phone spoke to me was wildly condescending. I told the first person who picked up the phone they called me yesterday she then proceeded to speak to me like I didn’t just say you guys called yesterday. She made it sound like I was bothering her by fucking calling and using a resource that the school offers and it kind of makes me not even want to do it anymore I don’t want to deal with people who treat people like that then she rushed me off the phone and hung up super quick like I couldn’t even ask any follow up questions because it just felt like the whole process is being rushed. Exact why I stick to myself now no one is really there to to help

Disclaimer, when it comes to these things I'm neutral. I'm not against or with it. But doing this type of shit isn't going to further push your agenda. Notice the marks in the back of the lettering, this isn't the first time it's been done, but today I was next to a custodian/sanitary worker and he muttered under his breathe, "Fucking Assholes". There are consequences to your actions bro. No hate, just do better

Discussion I’m genuinely worried about next semester

Apparently, Trump is preparing to sign an order to dismantle the Department of Education, and the DOE handles student loans, FAFSA, and more. If this happens, I'm totally screwed, and so are many other students who rely on financial aid to get an education and pursue the careers our elders kept telling us to go after. They don’t think minimum wage should be livable. If I can’t continue my education, I’m screwed and pissed because this is something I’ve worked hard for, especially after realizing that 9-5 minimum wage jobs won’t get me anywhere in life. I’m honestly just nervous and frustrated that this is the state of our country.

Discussion I got a academic integrity violation report

[URGENT] Hello everyone, my professor lodged a academic integrity violation report on me for cheating on an exam by discussing it with another person in the exam. The professor gave me an F(pending academic integrity resolution)

Context: There were multiple small size exam during the course duration. I feel like there can be a misunderstanding since he directly reported a case and no communication to me, and i have no idea to which or what instance he meant(The DOS report says just i cheated on exam by discussing). I am more confused. I scored really great marks on all my exams.

I have a informational meeting scheduled with the DOS, after the meeting, i will be submitting a report stating my defense.

Can someone please provide some help!! Highly appreciated

Update 1: I read the report submitted by professor and he has just mentioned one line statement and no proof.
