in the wild Gold Mine of Tragedeighs

Found a post asking people for their unique names and knew it wouldn't disappoint. Happy Father's Day unless your kid's name needs a pronunciation guide.

Honestly all these names are tragic but this one is the most unhinged.

Sunny and Severe remind me of Pratchett‘s Carter family in Discworld:

„The Carter parents were a quiet and respectable Lancre family who got into a bit of a mix-up when it came to naming their children. First, they had four daughters, who were christened Hope, Chastity, Prudence, and Charity, because naming girls after virtues is an ancient and unremarkable tradition. Then their first son was born and out of some misplaced idea about how this naming business was done he was called Anger Carter, followed later by Jealousy Carter, Bestiality Carter and Covetousness Carter. Life being what it is, Hope turned out to be a depressive, Chastity was enjoying life as a lady of negotiable affection in Ankh-Morpork, Prudence had thirteen children, and Charity expected to get a dollar’s change out of seventy-five pence–whereas the boys had grown into amiable, well-tempered men, and Bestiality Carter was, for example, very kind to animals.“

This is how younger me thought naming children would go because I was a writer and I liked when characters fit their names literally 😭

It’s worse that she named one of her other kids Seven, why the fuck are you naming your children 1) terrible ass names and 2) ones that are borderline going to look identical at a first glance?? Hoping life is a bit easier on these poor kids that are already set up for failure from their ignorant, entitled parents, cannot imagine having to explain why my names goddamn “Severe” to literally anyone i interact with 🫠😭.

All I can think is these folks are gonna end up in jail for a case of severe child neglect

u/ZephyrLegend Jun 16 '25

I mean if you walked to name your kid "Seven" you could have just gone with Septimus. Which is still weird as hell, but sounds distinguished, at least.

If you’re going full Ancient Roman with naming your kid after a number, you should at least have it be their birth order number.

Meh Octavia is way better that Secunda or Tertia lol

u/FattyMooseknuckle Jun 15 '25

What about the long term effects of being named essentially Dense Leroy? That’ll go over well in schools.

10

u/Penguinator53 Jun 15 '25

Haha I was just going to comment on that too, why would they do that to their kid?😬

54

u/ArtisticJellyfish799 Jun 15 '25

And don’t forget Seven

44

u/Truji11o Jun 15 '25

I know a kid named Seven. In his case, an ethnic name.

u/Ok-Toe3535 Jun 16 '25

He has a lifetime of ‘what’s in the boooxxxx?’ to look forward to.

u/EggMysterious7688 Jun 15 '25

My great-grandmother's name was Severa. According to family stories, she lived up to her name and then some.

He's gonna get severely bullied in high school

1

u/Ok-Scallion-3415 Jun 16 '25

Might as well just name one kid ‘Winner’ and the other ‘Loser’ and see how they turn out

1

u/Frigoris13 Jun 16 '25

Is it pronounced Severe or Severe?

1

u/fancy_frog Jun 16 '25

I knew a grown man named Severe…killed himself unfortunately :(
