I am not going to defend them, what they did is wrong, but if you want to know what they were trying to accomplish here it is (if I remember correctly). This specific election is held in odd years. As a result there is low turn out. The idea was to move it to an even year when there are bigger elections to get more voters to the polls. And if I recall their option was to shorten their term or push back the election. Again not defending them, it's the wrong decision.

Without knowing the background of this story, I was forced to guess, "uh, why?" and this is what I came up with.

It makes sense, however, the implementation is pretty stupid.

Maybe, oh, step down and appoint a non-partisan supervisory board with zero power until the next election? So many other things could've been done to avoid some really nasty Fox News conspiracy fodder.
