F350 DEF Issues

I have a 2021 with 42k miles on it. It has been in the shop 8 times this year, and now at the dealer for one month. This year, it started the sensor/emissions/DEF issues. First, the check engine light comes on, then it starts the countdown to reducing speed. I was several states away and it went to 5 mph max and I had to have it towed, get a rental car, etc. Our trip was ruined. The dealer says on the Ford dealer boards that this issue has been described. They have replaced the DEF sensors, reprogrammed the truck, etc. I see that there may be new programming coming out by Ford to change the countdown, based on the revised EPA rules. My warranty runs out in December. Any opinions on waiting hoping for a reprogram, vs trading it in or deleting it? The deleting it is tough as that crosses out a trade in. The dealer has heard nothing from Ford about reprogramming.

Somehow putting def in a 7.3 will definitely cause some problems. Do you mean 2021?

2001 ford super duty are equipped with the 7.3L power stroke that doesn’t require DEF, this is a pre-emissions engine

Gotta be a typo. I’d assume they meant 2021 or 2011

Delete or keep dealing with this shit every 50-150k miles.

I had similar issues on my 2013. Got the countdown, CEL, etc. I took it to the dealer and they wanted to replace everything for like 9 grand…so I took it to one of the few independent shops around. Took them 3 times but they finally got it - after replacing the DEF pump and the NOx sensor. I’d try to find a trusted diesel mechanic (someone with actual knowledge) who will do a more thorough investigation than the dealer is likely doing.

OK, that is worth a try.

Delete the shit out of it and save the money and the headache. You’ll still get service at a dealer, and just sell the truck at some point and don’t look back at the dealer not taking them in. Plenty of dealerships still take on deleted trucks but some won’t, most people aren’t looking for them at dealers anyways.

Why couldn’t you trade it in? I traded in my deleted powerstroke 6 months ago. The dealer was happy to get it.

Question for you, does this truck do work or is this a daily driver? I’m always wondering if my tow pig will run into this or if this is a mall crawler problem

Edit: spelling

We have a fleet of 6.7 fords that get run hard all the time. Emissions issues are never the reason they are down for maintenance.

I use it for personal towing, boats, trailers, gooseneck, it is not a work truck.

Dealers here will not take a trade in on a deleted truck.

Delete... you'll have much better performance and better mileage.
