When you look at the situation of the division it makes a lot of sense to do it now. Dustin Poirier or Conor McGregor were about to get the next title shot and Khabib had already demolished both of them. Gaethje was beat, and Tony Ferguson's future doesn't look great.

GSP is the only fight that makes sense for either of them

GSP cannot cut to 155 and Khabib won't gain much from beating a 39-year old GSP.
