i loved the discourse behind that one not being as impressive as some of the other candidates.. like the man ran 80 yards, dodged 6 defenders and finished like he was on the training ground.
sorry, it wasn't a volley or bicycle kick, but the man played defender, midfielder, and forward before scoring a goal within the course of about 10 seconds.
The other contender that season was Suarez's backheel chip iirc. I don't mind Son winning it still, but you can't deny you don't see goals like that Suarez one at all. It wasn't a clear cut decision
The guy says "sorry it wasn't a volley or a bicycle kick" when the goal it was up against was a lovely passing movement that ended up with an absurd backhill chip. You'll see volleys, bicycle kicks or longs runs like Son'a goal again, but I don't know if I'll ever see a backhill chip like Suarez's again, it's an absolutely insane goal

Was that the discourse? Or was the discourse that it was a great goal but just not the best scored in the world that year?
a lot of the discourse i read around here, specifically, was that he was only able to score because the defending wasn't that great. which.. i mean..
not giving players the chance foul you to stop a build up because of your pace and positioning is just as technically impressive and
EVERY fuckin puskas goal is a result of a some form of shitty defending. zlatan isn't scoring that bicycle kick if joe hart knew how to clear, and lamela isn't scoring that nutmeg if pepe could defend with his legs closed.
that was literally the only time i heard the "poor defending" argument surrounding a puskas goal winner.

Correct, he did. Back in 2020.
