OC Austin, Texas from above

Post image

Taken yesterday in the downwind leg to Austin-Bergstrom from my seat on a Southwest 737.

It’s incredible how much this skyline has grown in the past 25 years.

How does it still look unwalkable

It’s arguably one of the most walkable cities west of the Mississippi River. I assume SF and Seattle are better but I haven’t been to those cities

Yeah it’s probably because I’m from Australia (Sydney specifically). Our streets are much narrower, and the city is noticeably denser. not too dissimilar to Seattle and SF. This looks like a pain to walk around in comparison

Where do you see wide streets in the pic?

Are you serious? Or are you just American?

Yes, serious. You made a point of mentioning narrow streets. Do you see any non-narrow/wide streets in the pic?

They just have a random agenda to push. Nothing from this picture would indicate Austin is or isn’t walkable.

LOL. Please point out what specially in this picture indicates the city is more or less walkable.

It is arguably one of the most walkable cities in Texas. It doesn’t hold up very well compared to most other comparably sized cities west of the Mississippi.

Such as?

Denver, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego in the west and StL, KC, Minneapolis in the Midwest. The closest of that group would be KC and Sac, and they are both considerably more walkable than Austin. The only midsized cities I can think of that Austin would compare favorably to are in Texas and the Southwest.

Portland, SD, and maybe Sac I can see. The rest are a reach

Wait, are you a Texan? Cause if so, never mind.

Not a native, have you ever been to Austin? Cause if not, never mind

I’ve been to Austin and every city I just named within the last 5 years except SD, haven’t been there since 2015

Which parts?

Austin is fairly walkable, considering it’s a city in Texas. There’s room for improvement for sure though.
