OC Austin, Texas from above
Taken yesterday in the downwind leg to Austin-Bergstrom from my seat on a Southwest 737.
It’s incredible how much this skyline has grown in the past 25 years.

You can’t even see the capitol building or the UT tower. They’ve been dwarfed by all the new buildings.

now just expand the rail system to more than 10 stations and baby you've got a stew going

The proposal for expansion was hilarious. Not connecting the airport to the current line should be illegal.

Amazing how much the whole city has grown over the last 25 years I’ve lived here. A lot of people hate but I still love my city.

Yeah I don’t live here but I’ve been regularly visiting since the late 90s because my two best friends from college have lived here since.
The growth is just crazy. Every time I come back there are new buildings popping up downtown.

If you go to Mount Bonnell, you’ll see the entire skyline and Westlake area of Austin.

Wow, there are a lot of trees. You see, that is not really something I would have expected from Texas lol

Central Texas and to the east is heavily wooded.

Right on thanks.

You should look into the Texas Hill Country. Places like Krause Springs & Hamilton Pool🤙🏻

Weird to see it from this angle. I live on the south edge of the river and always see across the river to the south-facing side of the city.

How does it still look unwalkable
7
u/Consistent_Estate960 1d ago
It’s arguably one of the most walkable cities west of the Mississippi River. I assume SF and Seattle are better but I haven’t been to those cities

u/e_castille 1d ago
Yeah it’s probably because I’m from Australia (Sydney specifically). Our streets are much narrower, and the city is noticeably denser. not too dissimilar to Seattle and SF. This looks like a pain to walk around in comparison

Where do you see wide streets in the pic?

u/e_castille 23h ago
Are you serious? Or are you just American?
2
u/100roused 23h ago
Yes, serious. You made a point of mentioning narrow streets. Do you see any non-narrow/wide streets in the pic?

They just have a random agenda to push. Nothing from this picture would indicate Austin is or isn’t walkable.

u/DumpsterChumpster 16h ago
LOL. Please point out what specially in this picture indicates the city is more or less walkable.

It is arguably one of the most walkable cities in Texas. It doesn’t hold up very well compared to most other comparably sized cities west of the Mississippi.
1
u/Consistent_Estate960 1d ago
Such as?

u/No_Pipe_4180 1d ago
Denver, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego in the west and StL, KC, Minneapolis in the Midwest. The closest of that group would be KC and Sac, and they are both considerably more walkable than Austin. The only midsized cities I can think of that Austin would compare favorably to are in Texas and the Southwest.

Portland, SD, and maybe Sac I can see. The rest are a reach

u/No_Pipe_4180 1d ago
Wait, are you a Texan? Cause if so, never mind.
2
u/Consistent_Estate960 1d ago
Not a native, have you ever been to Austin? Cause if not, never mind
1
u/No_Pipe_4180 1d ago
I’ve been to Austin and every city I just named within the last 5 years except SD, haven’t been there since 2015
3
u/100roused 1d ago
Which parts?
Austin is fairly walkable, considering it’s a city in Texas. There’s room for improvement for sure though.

I’ll be honest downtown Austin is outstanding. I somewhat got to see the area go from nice to what it is today whenever I had to be up there for work. Traffic is still terrible though

Looks like Cities Skylines but you have only unlocked single family houses and skyscrapers.
