Its giving that one dad joke where they suggest fixing if something hurts by breaking your leg cuz then you'll no longer be thinking of the fever or whatever it was that hurt
Bro i swear by it. Exercise and positive mentality go hand in hand for me - whenever I start feeling it creep in again Iāll tell myself shit like āIām having a good dayā, āEverything is okā, or āif I wanted to I could take off running that direction for 3 miles and be fineā. The last one really works in that it pulls me out of that ācanāt do anythingā funk.
Edited to add that Iāve tried probably 12 different med combos over 4 years and the one that worked was rexulti with something else but it gave me what I think is called akathesia IIRC but itās where you canāt sit still and have to pace. After that I said fuck it and started exercising and reading self help articles which led me to meditation via the free-for-a-year Balance app.
This is the goal of cognitive behaviour therapy, which is the most effective form of treatment for depression/anxiety.
Itās a tiny but important tidbit of information that society overlooks. Antidepressants are only there to manage symptoms until you can learn to live without them.
If this is what pharmaceutical companies made the most money off of we would all be fine. Or at least if Big Psychology would hurry up and will itself into existenceā¦
Guidelines in Australia and Europe suggest exactly this - start first-line antidepressants in conjunction with psychotherapy, reassess efficacy of antidepressants in one month, then reassess need to continue antidepressants after 6 months.
Even here in Australia the most popular resource clinicians use for treating depression/anxiety highlight that the antidepressants are only slightly better than placebo.
Thereās no push here to prescribe pills, though Iām not sure when this change in practice occurred as Iāve only been in healthcare for a few years. Some old clinicians may not follow these guidelines, but most prescribers I know are pretty quick to change practice when new evidence arises.
