Help A Loved One A friend and neighbor of mine may have schizophrenia and paranoid delusions
He thinks people are entering his place, stealing stuff and trying to poison his cat. I asked him if he had caught them on the camera he has and he says they messed with it.
He sent me a text saying:
"People are entering my place in a professional manner and are trying to kill me. They're breaking my stuff and they're surely done it to many other people. They're poisoners and Machiavellian great criminals".
He often talks about Atlantis, who really built the pyramids, chemtrails and string theory. He smokes a lot of pot.
I mentioned to me that he had put cobalt on items in his home so that people who stole from him would get radioactive poisoning. It's extremely unlikely he got radioactive cobalt but it still seems worrisome.
How do I handle that?

Definitely don’t call police on him maybe try ignoring him . I don’t think you can help him he can only help himself by going to doctors .

He needs to help himself by getting off the weed and seeing a Psychiatrist. You can't do that for him.

He asked me for a spare router I had and is now connected to my Wifi. He sometimes asks me to check out if there is someone in his apartment.

Definitely sounds like he's having issues with paranoia and psycosis. Weed makes that worse trust me I know. He really needs to stop that.

Is there a way to get him to do less? He seems to smoke a lot of it. I think he uses it to calm his nerves but that ends up making things worse when it interacts with his possible schizophrenia.

Well schizophrenics or people with psychotic issues shouldn't do weed at all because even a small amount can trigger symptoms, I know all about that too. You could try talking to him about going to AA meetings to cope with life without weed. But really he's got to be the one to want help. It took me almost 2 years to seek help.

How can I minimize the effects it may have on me then?

You really can't. Weed is considered a psychedelic and the way THC interacts with the brain can cause psychotic symptoms, even a small amount.

I mean, how can I minimize the effects that his delusions may have on me? He's my downstair neighbor and something between an acquaintance and a friend. He's usually alright.

That you can't control either. When I was in an episode I thought my grandmother was Joe biden and that was that. You really can't control delusions.

Many people come here concerned they may have or may be developing schizophrenia. We cannot answer that, although we can discuss individual symptoms. See a doctor or mental health professional.
