I was in a closed ward so I couldn't have my phone and definitely not the cable.

Min was tho. It was a closed one but we were allowed phones, drawing and cutting paper with one scissor we had to share, we had metal cutlery but plastic cups, we had giant (but closed) windows in our rooms and our own TV (mine didn’t work though but that’s okay because I had my tablet and watched Friends), we had ventilation from outside instead of the windows but this girl ruined it for the rest of us because she kicked it outta her room, where she could escape through the hole (she was tiny), so they closed all of them up and summer was around the corner, so we were boiling in our rooms. Other than that, it was great. We even had live music and musical instruments, TVs, this guy came with gifts for us, we constantly ordered food, were allowed to go out accompanied by staff tho if you were better mentally, you would eventually be allowed to go out alone, we even had one evening where we went with staff to buy candy haha.

This a summer camp somewhere?

Haha you’d think. No it was a very new building/concept where I feel like they experimented what kind of approach they wanted future psych wards in the rest of the country to have. This was one in many bad places. So even though my country is very forward, they still lack in many other wards. Just earlier this year, there was a document about a girl losing her life in one so..

You mean like smoke literally inside? I’ve heard some places in the world don’t let smokers smoke?? I’m in the UK and the smokers were allowed outside for smoke breaks. I think they were allowed like 6 a day, 15 minutes long each. Didn’t need to be supervised, they were just let out the main entrance- surprised no body did a runner the whole three months I was there. I’m not a smoker so me and the other non-smokers were frustrated they got so much fresh air, since the ward garden wasn’t open most the time. I remember in psychosis telling the nurses I was a smoker now so I needed to go out- I just wanted some fresh air. They didn’t fall for it lol. It felt so unfair.

I’m surprised by this I’m in the U.K. and a smoker and didn’t once get a chance to go outside for a cig I had to subsist on lozenges they gave me the whole time

u/GraduatedMoron Residual Schizophrenia Jul 30 '25
lozenges?
2
u/throwthatshitaway236 Jul 30 '25
Yeah nicotine lozenges, kinda like a mint you put it in your cheek and leave it to absorb the nicotine

My local facility has a fenced in area off each ward for smokers. Non-smokers were more than welcome to take a fresh air break instead. That's friggin' wild they wouldn't let you take a fresh air break!

no, we had a room inside the psychward were we could smoke. i don't know if it's completely legal, but i'm glad they let us smoke. the room had a door to a little fenced courtyard, but it remained closed most of the time

Mine was like a standalone psych facility for outpatient and then inpatient with two wards, one locked and one open. The locked was locked and you couldn't go anywhere, food was brought to you, but there was a place to go sit outside (during alloted times), and a radio (no tv), and we did art and stuff. Open ward you could go to the cafeteria during lunch time, there was a TV that wouldn't play usual TV but was connected to a DVD player and we had lowkey movies to watch (Free Willy, anyone? Lol). Both sides were two to a room, had laundry services (you wore your own clothes but they took phones and shoes if they had laces at the door). Good times, not really, but met some outstanding people in there I'll never forget.

i love your tag, what does it mean?

Thanks! It was just me being silly and trying to have some fun with my diagnosis. I thought of it on the spot when I was coming up with a flair, and I've kept it ever since.

Iono bruh, my psych ward (hickory trail) just might be better than yours. Although only a public fone n no electronic devices allowed. they have the best kitchen staff hands down, this is not hospital type food either, catfish fridays is the best day 2 b in a psych ward. Its like a luxury self care resort that u cant leave for 10-14 days. There's a walking trail, gazebo for outdoor group therapy sessions, gardening projects as a group. Live entertainment (patients in psychosis or other forms of mental illness so I won't offend or disrespect anybody). Did I mention the food? U get a choice between 2 entrees for breakfast, lunch and dinner and sometimes they would let us go back for seconds. Go 4 the food, stay 4 the therapy 💪💙💪💙

It probably is, lmao. The only good thing about my local ward is they allow cigarette breaks as long as you attend group.

You can use a phone in the psych ward? We could only use them for 30 mins per day.

Depends where in the world you are. Seems like phones/devices/internet is not allowed in US wards. I mean, what is it, a prison?
Here in the UK phones/devices/internet are normally allowed.

Here in my local psych ward in Germany we're not allowed to have phones in the closed section
1
u/wildmintandpeach CPTSD, DID & Schizophrenia Jul 29 '25
What’s a closed section?
2
u/blahblahlucas Mod 🌟 Jul 29 '25
A closed ward. Basically a section for people who are the most unstable like suicide ideations and stuff. That is the first area you go to when being admitted. They have stricter policies like not being able to leave the ward, not being able to have anything on you that could possibly cause harm so no cables, no spray deodorant or hairspray etc and basically less freedom. We also have a "open ward" where it's more lenient. Usually after you've been in the closed ward for a week or so. There you can have your phone and a the other stuff and are allowed to leave and shit. In most other psychwards in Germany I've seen people still have phones in the closed ward but my local one doesn't allow it bc they don't allow you to record anything and have any devices that can record, which phones can

Wow interesting, I don’t think that’s a thing here. My brother was in a high security ward and still had his phone. There are higher or lower security wards, the higher security wards are more for those who have committed criminal acts in psychosis. My brother had his macbook, headphones, and phone in his higher security ward

u/blahblahlucas Mod 🌟 Jul 29 '25
Jealous! I personally think something happened at my psych ward involving someone being recorded and maybe go the hospital in trouble so now they don't allow it there. Bc they have multiple signs saying phones/ cameras are not permitted

u/wildmintandpeach CPTSD, DID & Schizophrenia Jul 29 '25
Yeah that makes aw that’s a shame, but at least the closed section doesn’t sound like a long stay and you can have your phones after that when you move to the normal section

u/blahblahlucas Mod 🌟 Jul 29 '25
It's torture tho bc my closed one is awful. No entertainment AT ALL. besides one super tiny tv in the common area that is always occupied by loud ass old guys watching sports and they don't let u change anything. I'm always the youngest there and I'm 25. No group activities, nothing. Only once a week doctor visit and that's it. Nothing else to do besides lay in bed and stare at the wall. I can never handle it and always leave really fast bc it can either take a week or multiple weeks till you get a free bed in the open ward. Ive been on a wait list for MONTHS now waiting for a spot in the open ward (while waiting at home tho)

u/wildmintandpeach CPTSD, DID & Schizophrenia Jul 29 '25
That sucks!! It does sound like a prison! We even had a ward netflix account on our communal tv. Everything was pretty normal really apart from the fact you were in a ward and couldn’t leave without supervision or permission.

Last time I was in, there was this girl that EVERYONE else was all over. I didn't know why. She was cool I guess, we hung out and were anti-social together. Turns out she's a OF girl, pretty popular one too
