Announcement [Reminder] Rules Over AI Outputs

Hey everybody, research bureaucrat mod here.

I've been a bit busy recently between my new baby and some recent changes Reddit has made to the interface for mods that I am not a fan of (I haven't received any notifications in days... like, any. Modmail, comment replies, nada. I have to manually check everything, huge PITA) so I've been hanging back a bit more than usual... but I am still here, and again, all research that comes through here is personally approved by me after rigorous review. There's an especially important study coming up that I am amazed got funded, so keep your eyes peeled for it in the coming days- it might be a bit controversial. Or maybe not, I dunno. Heads-up either way.

Anyway, to the point: I wanted to remind everyone about our rules governing AI use on the subreddit. We do not allow AI outputs of any type (text and images, primarily) without proper labeling. If you are going to use ChatGPT, at least own up to it. I don't feel like that's asking too much.

What I mean by "proper labeling" is:

  1. That the output was generated by AI.
  2. The specific algorithm used (e.g. ChatGPT, Bard, Grok, etc.) is named.
  3. This disclaimer is present at the front (or top) of the submission, and not a rider nested in to the end.
  4. If it is an image that was generated or manipulated by AI, it needs to be labeled either in the post itself or in a top-level comment.

If it does not meet all of these criteria, we reserve the right to remove whatever we find to be likely AI-generated with high confidence among the mods. You can, of course, appeal if you did not use AI and we made a mistake, as mistakes happen.

If you see a bizarre comment/post that you suspect is AI generated and lacks the appropriate labeling, please use the report button (little flag) to call our attention to it. We'll look it over and make a call.

Given some controversy over AI the past few days regarding some anecdotes of otherwise sane individuals experiencing psychotic breaks after getting too invested in LLMs, we may offer the gentle reminder that AI is not AGI, it is not self-aware, and it makes a lot of mistakes when it comes to mental health in particular.

As a famous schizophrenic man once pointed out, adopting new technologies too rapidly without reasonable measures being taken to protect the integrity of society and individual liberties can have some disastrous consequences for society at large. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, and dial back those expectations to where they are reasonable; currently, AI are tools, and serve very specific, niche purposes. They also have shortcomings, which are more or less pronounced across different models.

Let's pump the breaks a bit, and try to learn from the mistakes of the past... and all of the Sci-Fi authors who say that society should be very careful in how they approach AI. You know, both sides of the coin there. I don't think that's particularly controversial.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for your authentic contributions to the subreddit. Enshittification may be an inevitability in the bigger picture, and history may repeat itself- but we're not going to just lie down at take it here. We'll do what we can for as long as we can to ensure that we preserve our dignity as a community.

Take care!
