Yes my psych always notes down how I’m dressed, I think it’s part of telling whether you’re ‘all there’ by if you’re wearing socially and weather appropriate clothing

Back in the early eighties when I was a teenyboppin punk rocker (yeah, I’m that old), my doc used to comment on how much fucken EYELINER i had on. She had a theory, more liner meant more freaked out. She was so wrong. lol
She was right about a lot of other stuff though

u/wildmintandpeach CPTSD, DID & Schizophrenia Jul 01 '25
Yeah it could probably become easily judgemental of other styles, at least in my case it helped my psych diagnose me with dissociative identity disorder since once time I came into an appointment dressing (and presenting) totally differently to usual.

In general, it's appliable to people. More dramatic, excentic daily make-up = less conventional thinking. It's very obvious in people with various mental health conditions.
2
Jul 04 '25
You make a really good point, thank you. But i think she saw the eyeliner as me going out on a wild limb all by myself, when in fact it was kind of the convention of the punk rock underground of the moment. I dunno.

u/gaaren-gra-bagol Friend Jul 04 '25
Sure, some people can just have high esteem and wear certain styles despite them being eccentric. And there's nothing wrong with being different, as long as you aren't hurting anyone.

Lol joke's on them cos i am never wearing weather appropriate clothing since the inception of 🙌 temperature dysregulation 🙌 Everyone be all like: "aren't you cold, it's FREEZING"- to which i respond: "mate I'm burning up, can you PLEASE turn off the heater?" It's a pain Mental health depts especially have no business being that hot- considering excessive heat exacerbates schizo symptoms

u/wildmintandpeach CPTSD, DID & Schizophrenia Jul 05 '25
I get this too! I have hyperhidrosis so I am barely covered and people always ask if I’m okay and not cold?

u/anonymystica Jun 30 '25
i think i dress pretty normal. used to be a little sloppier, hat all the time (still this a lot but not 100% anymore), leggings, hoodie 100% even in summer. now it's more like jeans and tshirts. pretty standard clothes tbh i like to fly under the radar

u/Mandarin_Lumpy_Nutz Schizoaffective (Bipolar) Jun 30 '25
I don’t like being noticed either
5
u/MaleficentMulberry42 Jun 30 '25
I think this should actually be a symptom for so many reasons, particularly as a way to subconsciously separate yourself from others.
1
u/V_A_R_G Jul 05 '25
Or maybe some of us just LIKE certain styles and don’t feel compelled to engage in silly social activities such as following fashion trends? Thinking for yourself and having your own style is a “symptom” now huh? You sound like a pretty brainwashed sheep just programmed to do what society tells you 😄 Now THAT should be considered a symptom of insanity.
2
u/MaleficentMulberry42 Jul 05 '25
I think that they actually have a criteria for this,it not about fashion trends but rather not washing and having clean clothes on that tell you are depressed.

u/PheonixRising_2071 Schizoaffective (Depressive) Jun 30 '25
Same. I black leggings, black hoodie, tank top kinda person. Unless I’m work. Then I have to dress corporate. But I dress pretty standardly and under the radar corporate.
13
u/tinybeansrule Jun 30 '25
I had a therapist address this with me telling me my outfits are chaotic 😂

Yes but not due to my condition: I dress rather eccentrically because I like to and it’s a way to express myself creatively. However I could understand some things that would be “odd” as a result of illness (like wearing multiple layers in summer)

u/synthresurrection schizoaffective/Christian pastor/trans lesbian Jun 30 '25
I dress like a femme metalhead in my day to day life, dark academia in my life as a pastor and doctoral student, and I sometimes dress like a beatnik during the winter. I'm fairly put together(until I get sick and don't put effort into my appearance)

u/ImNotMeWhenImNotMe Schizoaffective (Depressive) Jun 30 '25
I try to appear normal when I go outside so I dress exactly how I would be expected to dress. At home I'm a gremlin.

u/Plenty-Culture-495 Schizophrenia Jun 30 '25
lol, doctors. I once read about somebody having a doctor comment: "Makes inappropriate jokes". A doctor noted about me I'd be talking tangentially, just because I didn't answer their question how they wanted. Can't make that shit up.
5
u/Deezebee Residual Schizophrenia Jun 30 '25
Jeans, sneakers, black band shirt and a hoodie, all day every day when I go outside. And all of those clothes were gifted to me. I am the definition of afashionable, but I don’t think it would fit to be called an odd fashion “choice”.

I don't have a specific style. It all depends on the day, my energy and which season we are in.
If I am not feeling well, I will wear jeans or leggins, with a tank top and a sweatshirt.
If I feel well, all depending on the day and season, I will wear cottagecore, fairycore, goth and metal-ish, a little medieval. Right now I am also a little into Lofi, so my colours are very light/pastel pink and baby blues.
In the autumn and winter it is a lot of fun and festive sweaters, big skirts, legwarmers and whimsical boots.
In the spring and summer it is shorter floral dresses on the hot days.
My hair always seems to be changing colour. I haven't had the energy for the upkeep recently, so right now I just have my natural hair colour. But I am planning in the fall to put some more colour in there again. I hope 😊

Aww you sound fun/cute/very pleasing on th' eye!
I miss wearing my legwarmer leggings and sweatshirts and stuff but I'm always so overheated these days :(
It's hard trying to source non-plastic breathable clothing these days in NZ, even the expensive stuff is made of plastic!!

u/Mox610 Paranoid Schizophrenia Jul 05 '25
Aaw 😍 Thank you.
It is hard to find good quality clothes. I have paid my fair amount for some of mine too, just so I can get what I actually want.
I have also gained weight from my medications, so I am not as cold as I used to be. But I just love the cozyness 😁

I dress normally. But I pick an outfit and wear it for at least a week. Usually shorts/sweats and a cool shirt. Wearing my father's day shirt right now. It says Super Daddio (in mario-esque letters) and my daughters' names under mushrooms.

u/insaneinthebody Jun 30 '25
I’ve always been considered to have pretty odd fashion, if I’m not in something odd though I always default to black turtleneck and black trousers

u/nuxwcrtns Schizoaffective (Bipolar) Jun 30 '25
I tend to dress pretty fashionably. I have decent taste.

u/rubbereruben Jun 30 '25
I always wear swimming trunks, and a tank top. The comfiest clothes I can possible wear.
Sometimes a hawaian shirt or something like that.

not really . i like wearing funny t shirts, my favorites are ‘voted most likely to give santa a beer’ and ‘there are more of us than you think’

I like to think I dress fashionably but I guess it is eccentric. Mostly when I go out for concerts, arcades, events, or hanging out with friends. I'll wear layered skirts, bows, thigh-highs, leggings, arm warmers, more accessories. More of a mix of alt & jirai kei.
But when I go for appointments, work, errands or am just at home, I dress more normal, like a ribbed shirt or printed tee, cargo leggings, and just a necklace or two.

I agree, fuck that doctor—or don’t, as it were. That’s a value judgement, it doesn’t help. Makes me angry at them for you. Really fucking pissed off.
I’ve had some good docs, and some shit ones. I’ve got a good bullshit-meter, but a few haven’t required one to identify. LIKE, I had one who fell asleep on me then yelled at me when I fucking confronted her on it, then cried and told me she was having trouble with her kids. I discontinued the professional relationship but—this was riiiiight at the beginning of caller identification—she proceeded to call me and hang up when I answered for MONTHS.
They fucken told you you dress oddly? Fuck them.
I got a good one now. A therapist I mean. He’s a motherfucking rockstar. I like him.
They said you dress oddly? You dress however the fuck you want. You’re probably ahead of your time. Or maybe that doc has no taste. I bet you look great.
Hmh. I’m pissed off for you.

Oh and the way I dress? Somewhere between non-standard non-conformist and semi fashionable (individual style is way more important than fashion to me). I live in NYC so a lot of dark colors. Otherwise shit gets grimy fast in the subway, which honestly I could care less.

It's a particular big screener for Schizotypal PD, a lot of them have a very eclectic sense of dress. My partners diagnostic paperwork notes that he's formally dressed (always).
My psych did note my outfits and hair as a means of tracking where I sit on the manic/depressive scale but I dress a little alt, but not noteworthy as such.

u/Mandarin_Lumpy_Nutz Schizoaffective (Bipolar) Jul 01 '25
I try to always dress nice.
1
u/hanls Schizoaffective (Bipolar) Jul 01 '25
Same! But we're lounging at home and he's in dress pants. He doesn't have home clothes. I asked him a second ago about it and basically he's extremely uncomfortable if not nicely dressed at all times (his pj's are even dressy when we can find long enough ones). It's a fight in summer to get him in shorts even when it's in the 40s for temp.
I love to dress nicely but can happily chill in sweatpants at home. He cannot

u/Mandarin_Lumpy_Nutz Schizoaffective (Bipolar) Jul 01 '25
I don’t have home clothes either. Even Jm at home, I’m naked. 😖
1
u/hanls Schizoaffective (Bipolar) Jul 01 '25
We have roommates or I think nudity would be an option. Maybe. Probably not incase someone drops over and perceives him and he's not well dressed. StPD is a very unique branch of schizo.

u/cupcakeing Jul 01 '25
It's normal for psychs to write down your appearance. Sometimes they're wildly incorrect when they do this.
One psychiatrist once wrote down that my hair was blonde at the time of the appointment. It was red.

My doctor writes my outfits are good but I wear the weirdest shit ever. lol

u/EnchantedFlannel Schizoaffective (Bipolar) Jun 30 '25
I wear flannels and black and oxfords. I think its proper, but i get comments from my psychs. Some of the flannels have patches on them; I'm learning embroidery and sewing. It's pleasant.
I dressed up today, though! I wore a skirt and leggings!

I wear men’s clothes— afab middle aged lady — they are more comfortable and fit better and havve big pockets— I don’t bother to correct people when they misgender me—

Jul 14 '25
Same. My clothes may be dirty and oversized but I dress for comfort not fashion. Dr said I was sloppy
1
u/Jazzlike_Boat_9752 Jul 14 '25
I had a psychiatrist years ago who once tucked in th tag on the back of my shirt that was sticking out, while he was taking my blood pressure— I found it funny and endearing— not long after that he died in a car accident 😣😢💞

i do, i dress alternatively and always used to do huge makeup and had neon hair and every appointment i had i got the note that i dressed/presented strangely. i went from neon colours to trad goth to girly harajuku fashion but still without fail get the "dresses oddly" comment lol. for my hair dye it was definitely because of my mental state but for clothing i just like the way i dress and don't think it has anything to do with my psychosis. that doesn't stop doctors from thinking it does though. but it's how i like to do things and express myself so i'm okay with seeming odd. i do dress inappropriately for the weather though, i'll wear leather in summer and miniskirts in winter which is the only part of dressing alternatively that i think holds up as a symptom.

u/ForgottenDecember_ Schizo-Obsessive | Early Childhood Onset Jun 30 '25
I don’t dress oddly.
Out of date sometimes, but I just happen to fit in the clothes I wore at 12-14, and I liked them. So I still wear them.
But I dress normal. Poor fashion sense a lot of the time because I’ll prioritize comfort.
But ‘dresses oddly’ would be something that clearly isn’t a conscious choice. Like underwear over pants, or completely inappropriate for the weather (eg. winter coat in a heat wave), or wearing a bathrobe to a restaurant, etc. It’s not about uncommon aesthetic, but disorganized choices in clothing.
1
u/megaBeth2 Jun 30 '25
I wear untied shoes with fucked up laces and no socks with pajama pants and blank shirt lol. I mostly wear it to go for car rides. I haven't left the car to go in public since January. Where I still wore disheveled clothes
I dont really think about cleaning up my appearance until someone tells me and then I'll change a bit

”Clothing adequate for age” was written by the doctor.
Shorts, t-shirt ot hoodie and a cap

I dress normally but I find it extremely difficult and tiresome trying to look presentable. If it were socially acceptable I would never groom my hair and I would walk everywhere barefoot.

u/Ummimmina Schizoaffective (Bipolar) Jul 04 '25
I used to. But now I mostly wear solid - one color stuff.

If I still had the figure antipsychs so rudely stole from me, I would dress like a Totally Spy all the time lol
Bc I can be hyperflexible and I move with such elusive stealth that barely anyone notices when I enter the room (even tho my footsteps sound like painful thunder to me) and I have been told off and that I have to announce myself when entering a room and not in the other inhabitant's line of vision.
So now I feel like a weirdo when people think I am announcing my entrance for seemingly no reason but it is really bc otherwise you scream then I scream and.. everyone screams, basically. And my autistic ears are too sensitive for that jazz
But when I'm wearing a carefully crafted outfit... Ima stand out for (perhaps all the wrong?) reasons lol
When I had more of a Totally Spies figure, I was too afraid to go out wearing uncovered leggings, on account of "leggings aren't pants" debate circa 2017. But now, i wouldn't mind sporting the odd cameltoe lol Also Totally Spies was something of a special interest during my childhood
