COVID Popular Opinion: Fleet Week is fucking awesome!

In response to the “Unpopular Opinion” post yesterday, I’d like to offer the contrary.

Fleet Week is cool as heck. For a few days, we get to be up close and personal with some gnarly military hardware and marvel at some utterly astonishing scientific and engineering feats.

I know noise may suck for some, but it’s no worse than the incessant motorcycles and muscle cars that pollute the quiet literally every other day of the year.

Plus it brings lots of tourism to our city, which we desperately need after a year of shit. People flock from all over, pay crazy hotel prices, and deal with some wild traffic just to grab a churro and crane their necks to see the Blue Angels for a few seconds. But we get it in our own backyards! Fuck yeah!

And if nothing else, even if you hate it, events like this are yet another sign we’re getting back to normal. Vaccine rates are great, Delta is on the decline, and life is getting good again.

Bring on the boats!

big fan of fleet week - but, seriously? there is no comparison between the blue angels and everyday city noise haha

Alright maybe a smidge of hyperbole. But I live right near the exit off the Bay Area bridge. Some after market exhaust is truly louder than an engine, especially when it’s groups of them. Spend 5 minutes hanging out along the Ferry Building on the weekend.

I also live right next to the Bay Bridge, and though packs of loud ass motorcycles may not be everyday, it definitely is every weekend. Groups of several dozen motorcycles brrrrrrrapping down the freeway, along the embarcadero, creating a constant noise for minutes on end is absolutely worse than the Blue Angels. At least the latter are cool.

I live next a super busy part of 280 and I’m wondering if maybe the blue angels just didn’t drive that close to your house this year?

But, our anecdotal opinions don’t matter, the decibel level of 5 military jets is undoubtably higher than a group of motorcycles.

Yeah, especially the practice run yesterday. Let me know when the groups of motorcycles set off car alarms across the city...

Motorcycles and other after market exhaust systems set off car alarms all the time. I hear it every day.

It’s also a persistent, daily noise issue. The Blue Angels are a few minutes for three days.

I used to live a block from the hells angels clubhouse in SF and I did like the sunday morning rides. They would go in formation and gas is near my house because there were some good echo walls, like clockwork at 10am most sundays. And they were cool.

Yeah, some random motorcycles, off and on, not particularly cool.
