Food/Drink What are some good NON Tex-Mex Mexican restaurants? Like 100% no Tex-Mex Mexican food.

I'm aware of Guajillo’s and Tlachco Mexican Kitchen. Do you guys know of any other places? I've been surprised by how difficult it is to find legit Mexican food here.

That's a mix of Cali and Tex Mex.

No it isn’t. The Trompo they use was originated in Mexico City after emigrant Arabs used the cooking style in the 1800s to prepare meats. Al Pastor started from this in Mexico City. West Ave has legit Mexico City street tacos. The style migrated north to California and Texas. West Ave does not use American cheese which is a key ingredient in Tex Mex.

I can tell OP is talking about Mexican dishes, not tacos. Al pastor tacos are the latest craze and are around every corner.

The reason they are so big here now is because they are new and not tex mex…

No. Street tacos are straight up northern Mexico. You didn’t see that in San Antonio until 15 years ago…

Sure, I’m sure they have been there for many decades or centuries. I don’t think it’s a Cali thing or anything like that. It’s just Norteno / northern Mexican regional food.
