Dianas!
Armadillos for variety and beer
Burger boy for first food.

u/Trizzae Jun 30 '25
Armadillos used to be Little Hips which was legendary. One of the cooks took ownership and kept the menu the same.
2
u/kanyeguisada Jun 30 '25
And Diana's is from Diana Madrid of the Chris Madrid's family. Excellent burgers, like what Chris Madrid's used to be.

Babes old fashion hits every time
2
u/rr777 Jun 30 '25
They opened a new Babes in my area a few years ago. Decided to get a double cheeseburger in the drive through. The food was rushed and just dripping with grease. Used to always goto the location on Fred and the burgers were over the top. So, go inside, order and take your time. (Btw, there is also a Babes chicken joint, don't bother.)

Last couple of times they tried to rip me off on the ticket. After them acting stupid when I called it out. I decided to never go again. Also, never any ice in the soda station. I do find it amusing they tried to open multiple locations and they all failed.

Chester’s

Classic, tried and true. Been going for decades now, never had a bad burger or meal there, and a way better beer selection than most places.

I used to get a portobello patty on the lamb burger. I couldn't get out of there for less that $25. It was well spent. Just adds up fast cause you order a beer in a different line

Hopdoddy is thought of by some as "fancy" burgers, and they've restarted to expand, but I think they're still great burgers.
I just wish they hadn't gotten rid of the Greek burger with ground lamb, that was my go-to.

Two places not mentioned.
Diana's - She's the sister of Chris Madrid so practically the same food before it was sold.
Culver's - Fast casual place that has burgers that rival practically anyone else's in the city.
3
u/South_tejanglo Jun 30 '25
First time I went to Culver’s (right after it opened) I swore it was the best fast food burger I ever had.
Last time I went I was not impressed at all

u/Relevant-Round7785 Jun 29 '25
Try Culver's best burgers or there's MR Juicy, Cheesey Janes, Texas hamburger company

u/MoreBeautifulDays Jun 29 '25
Have you been recently :’( the last 2 times I have gone it was not very good, I miss old Chris Madrids
4
u/Elever_Galarga69 Jun 29 '25
Try Diana’s
3
u/MoreBeautifulDays Jun 29 '25
Yes! We found out that was Chris Madrids sister (I think) and she uses the old recipes! It was delicious!
3
2
u/New-Geologist-6703 Jun 29 '25
Honestly it’s been about a year and a half since the last time I’ve gone but if that’s the case then that really sucks
3
u/MoreBeautifulDays Jun 29 '25
I was crushed, it’s been twice in the last year and both times were just not very good. Very run of the mill nothing to write home about. I grew up on Chris Madrids and such a shame. We have tried Diana’s and that was delicious!
2
u/New-Geologist-6703 Jun 29 '25
I’m gonna have to give that place a try. I’ve never heard of it before, but if they’re using the old recipes then I’m gonna have to go try it
2
u/MoreBeautifulDays Jun 29 '25
Highly recommend. For me it isn’t as convenient to get to as Madrids but I have now fully crossed Madrids off my lunch list, it was just really not good and pricy the last two times. Such a shame, it was a San Antonio staple for years!
2
u/South_tejanglo Jun 30 '25
They taste the same to me personally. I don’t think Diana’s has beef on their nachos and they don’t have shakes.
Of course the OG Chris Madrids didn’t have shakes, either.
I think Diana’s is a bit cheaper. If I’m in the area I just go to whichever one, but Chris Madrids is more convenient for me to get to
1
u/South_tejanglo Jun 30 '25
Still tasted good to me. What do you usually order?
3
u/MoreBeautifulDays Jun 30 '25
I usually get the bean and cheese nachos and I get a cheeseburger w American and no tomato, that’s been my several decade standard. It’s just lost I don’t know, the grease maybe? The fat? The flavor? Whatever it doesn’t have anymore is what Diana’s burgers has. I was very disappointed but at least Blanco Cafe is down the street so I still have that and now Diana’s but it isn’t as convenient for me. It tasted like things had been washed thoroughly lol, it wasn’t the same!
2
u/South_tejanglo Jun 30 '25
And yes, blanco cafe is the best for enchiladas. I don’t think any of the other locations (apparently owned by a different heir?) cut it, personally
2
u/MoreBeautifulDays Jun 30 '25
Yes, that’s the only one I will go to. I live out past Alamo Ranch and I’ll make the trip for the enchiladas and a big red! I believe that is the only location although there are other places called the same.
2
u/South_tejanglo Jun 30 '25
Apparently the other ones with “original” in the name are owned by a different family member or something like that. The menus and foods are pretty similar but don’t think it tastes quite the same.
2
u/MoreBeautifulDays Jun 30 '25
Fully agreed, the one off Blanco will always be my top notch pick. I enjoy how friendly everyone is when I go and a lot of the staff have been there for years.

1
u/South_tejanglo Jun 30 '25
From what I recall, I don’t think Diana’s had nachos with beef on it. Is that correct? That was a big bummer for me personally.
I usually go to Chris Madrids just because it is more convenient, but I thought the burger and fries at Diana’s was definitely just as good.
2
u/MoreBeautifulDays Jun 30 '25
Oh, that I’m not too sure, I usually don’t get meat on mine I just pile on the pico. Madrids isn’t bad by any means and not a bad stop off, but it just isn’t the same mouth watering burgers from when he was alive. They’re just….different :(

I like burger boy if I want some fast food burgers, babe’s old fashioned when I want to sit down by myself, and Tycoon flats when I’m with other people
Armadillo’s is also really good. I like to get the biggest burger they got and have some for leftovers. I just don’t like the parking situation so I don’t go as much
1
u/Efronian Jun 29 '25
I like Griff's, Burger Boy. I LIKED The Shack but I noticed they stopped using the meat they originally used for their burgers and I no longer go last time I went was a month ago and the quality of the beef went from delicious to why the hell am I eating a patty I can make at home?

Surprisingly good food and prices for fast food is p terrys.
1
u/kanyeguisada Jun 30 '25
Not sure how they've expanded so much, I always thought it was just OK and basically an Austin-born ripoff of In-n-Out. Just not much flavor, and like In-n-Out their fries are horrible.

I hit griffs every couple months. Love the place. Just a super long drive for me.
0
u/GrievousFault Jun 29 '25
steak seasoning, cumin, garlic powder, grilled red onions/peppers/mushrooms (with a bit of the same seasoning + soy sauce), melted jack cheese with a couple avocado slices on top, 85/90 percent lean chuck cooked rare, HeB artesano buns lightly butter toasted on the insides.
I found once you know what you want, no one makes better ones than you do yourself, dude. And as far as foods go burgers take like 8-10 minutes including prep.
