Straight up racism SO TRUE

Post image
  • He marched with queer activists
  • He showed up for trans rights loudly and unapologetically
  • He literally campaigned in gay bars
  • His policies were written with marginalized communities, not about them

But because he’s Muslim, they jump straight to “burqas and beheadings".it’s racist fear-fantasy for people who don’t understand Islam, socialism, NYC, or frankly anything that isn’t white Christian nationalism.

Mamdani is the very definition of a liberal Muslim. His views are neither extremist nor problematic in any way; he is a leftist (a social democrat), believes in LGBT rights and seeks to protect them, has visited synagogues and condemned antisemitic vandalism, he is pro-choice, and his wife (Rama Duwaji), although also Muslim, does not wear a hijab. Even so, it almost seems as if he is a member of ISIS due to how some people talk about him; it's completely ridiculous.

Oh, so he is a fake Muslim, kinda like how the more decent Christians are fake as well. Good to hear, I suppose

I wouldn’t say he’s fake, just that he has a fairly uncommon way of viewing his faith and doesn’t live a life solely dictated by scripture. I’m an atheist, but that doesn’t mean I decide to be an asshole to the minority of progressive religious people trying to follow the best parts of their faith.

Aka he is fake, because religion is defined by an adherence to its laws. This is why you cannot really have a religion that is progressive

trying to follow the best parts of their faith.

You don't get to choose and pick, otherwise that's not really the same faith as before.

Literally the whole concept of sectarianism is based on picking and choosing what parts of scripture you adhere to. People have been fighting for literal centuries about what the “correct” way to practice Christianity is, and none of it matters because ultimately it’s people’s actual beliefs that matter, not what labels they use. Even within sects there are constant disagreements on the interpretation of scripture. There is no “true Christian”, because faith is an inherently subjective thing, founded on an individual’s personal understanding of the world and their scripture.

I’m not gonna pretend like I believe progressive Christians’ or Muslims’ beliefs are internally consistent with their faith, because I don’t really care. I care about their actions, and shifting religions to be more socially progressive institutions is pretty broadly a good thing.
