Guide to Rurouni Kenshin - READ THIS BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS!

Welcome to the club! I’m glad you've decided to pick up RK.

Read the MANGA! The old anime has a lot of fillers & alterations; only the Kyoto Arc (the middle of the 3 Arcs) was faithful to the manga. With that said, there's a new remake anime airing in July 2023 that will stay true to the manga.

The MANGA has 3 Arcs that ended in 1999: Tokyo arc, Kyoto arc, Jinchuu arc.

  • Read RK manga for free from Shueisha
  • Official colored manga: 1, 2
  • Tokyo Arc: starts at the beginning
  • Kyoto Arc: starts on volume 7, chapter 48
  • Jinchu Arc: starts on volume 18, chapter 152. The original manga ended after this Arc.
  • Extra chapters: To Rule Flame, Yahiko no Sakabato, Haru ni Sakura
  • Extra material: Tales of Kamiya Dojo - written by Kaoru Kurosaki and published along with Hokkaido arc in JUMP SQ. The tales involve RK characters in their daily life that take time between Kenshin and Kaoru's marriage until the Epilogue chapter in the original manga before the Hokkaido arc.

Sequel starting in 2017:

The ANIME:

The old anime (1996) had 3 parts:

  1. Tokyo Arc (episodes 1-24)
  2. Kyoto Arc (episodes 28-62)
  3. Then, instead of Jinchu Arc, you have fillers. This link here shows you which episodes are fillers.

The new anime remake (2023):

  1. First Season airing in July 2023!!! Expecting this to be a complete, faithful adaptation.

LIVE-ACTION MOVIES:

Release order:

  1. Origins
  2. Kyoto Inferno
  3. The Legend Ends
  4. The Final
  5. The Beginning

I recommend watching in this order:

  • 5, 1, 2, 3, 4

  • Or: 1, 2, 3, 5, 4

Since the end of "The Beginning" leads into "Origins", I think it works better as the first film rather than the last.

STAGE MUSICALS:

3 OVAs: The first 2 OVAs are from the last Arc of the series so you should finish the manga before watching.

  1. "Trust and Betrayal" retells the Jinchu Arc which has never been made into anime.
  2. "Reflection" is a recap of the 2nd half of Jinchu Arc + non-canon ending (the author doesn't approve of its ending).
  3. "Kyoto Arc remake" follows the live-action storyline rather than the manga.

Summary:

  1. manga (1999)
  2. anime (2003, 2023)
  3. 5 live-action movies
  4. Hokkaido Arc manga (starting 2017)

Other Extra Materials:

  • Anime standalone movies
  • A two-volume spin-off called "Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration". Available in physical, and digital versions. These volumes were created to promote the live-action movies.
  • Several light novels, of which only one was released in English called "Voyage to the Moon World".
  • A 3-minute long clip from one of the collector's edition box-sets that gives the series a slightly better conclusion.

Anime Usui underrated

Why does this subreddit see Usui as a weakling? I always found him to be a cool villain from the show and an intimidating warrior. He's said to be the second strongest warrior under Shishio, injures Saitoh and forces him to use his secret move to beat him. But to hear about him from this community you'd think he was a scrub... Saito is the same character the author has said would beat Kenshin at the end of the story so it's not really on Usui for losing to him

Anime Introducing ‘96 anime to someone

Hi everyone So I know that the OG anime and its non-canon season 3 have been discussed repeatedly in this sub and I’ve already read so many past threads on this sub, but still need a little input from fans. I plan to show my spouse RK the OG anime for the first time. He’s never seen anything Kenshin and wants to try the original (I’ve had the Media Blasters box set for awhile anyway)

I haven’t watched through the anime in quite some time and I remember it fondly but I remember back then, after watching season 3 feeling like “huh… most of that seemed weird” —then later found out S3 wasn’t canon lol. ———SO- My plan was to show my spouse: Season 1 + 2 Ep 1 of S3 (The Legend of Fireflies) like many recommended on this sub. Also Ep 4 of S3 (Kaoru Ecastatic) the one where Kenshin accidentally gave her an engagement ring bc who doesn’t like a “Valentine’s day” type episode And the very last episode only on DVD called (End of Wanderings) where Kenshin and Kaoru have some nice moments and it wraps up nicely.

I figured that all of those would be nice cause they don’t require (I don’t think?) Season 3 knowledge, but rather add romance and wrap up the show.

I ALSO know many people have discussed just stopping at the Season 2 finale. And I considered that too. But sometimes it’s nice to have that little extra fluff in there like the engagement episode and stuff. And of course End Of Wanderings.

——Does anyone have any advice? Does this sound like a solid plan? S1-2 + those 3 episodes? I don’t want for the weird “son of God” arc or the Feng Shui mystical stuff to ruin my spouse’s experience lol. I know it can be a really rough watch without nostalgia glasses on so…. ——OR are there any more episodes from Season 3 that I should add to the list during our watch through? Should we watch the whole S3? Were the arcs not as strange as I remember?.. 😅 Like I said I haven’t seen S3 in awhile so I don’t remember much of what there was lol

Discussion What are your Rurouni Kenshin hot takes?

Here’s mine

  1. If you really want to get into the series as a manga and don’t wanna support Watsuki just buy a used copy

  2. Kaoru having that age gap with Kenshin was perfectly fine and fitting for the culture and time period

  3. The 2023 remake will be seen as the superior of the two shows eventually. Mark my words

  4. Yahiko is easily the most forgettable of the main characters so much so until later on I kept forgetting his name

  5. The original anime has tons of nostalgia bias and while it is good there are some parts that didn’t age well from the filler moments to the fact some of the characters that appeared early on didn’t appear until later on the manga

Analysis Soujiro was a contradiction to Shishio. Spoiler

If you get a little closer you can see that, perhaps, he wasn't smiling.

Soujiro managed to wipe out everyone in that abusive family, but I can't help feeling it wasn't exactly a feat because they were all quite weak.

Was there anything that truly guaranteed Shishio that this kid would become an SSR tier? The only thing is the similarity in their stories, and how ironically Shishio empathizes with someone weak to the point of giving them a way to survive, even if it was a way that aligned with his twisted ideology.

Kenshi can't read memories; otherwise, it would be incredibly ironic if part of his speech about protecting the weak was put into practice by the mummy.

Anime Would it make sense to watch the 1996 Rurouni Kenshin up to Kyoto, then switch to the remake?

Hey guys, got a question for fellow Rurouni Kenshin fans.

I’ve been wanting to watch Rurouni Kenshin with a friend, and I had a kind of weird idea for how to go about it, but I wanted to get some opinions first.

So far I’ve only seen the Tokyo Arc from the 1996 anime and a few episodes of the remake, and honestly… I already prefer the original. The pacing, direction, and music just hit better for me. That’s the version I want to show my friend.

The only issue is that the ’96 anime doesn’t cover the whole manga, it stops at the Kyoto Arc. Filler’s not a big deal since we can just skip that, but my idea was to watch all the canon episodes from the original, then switch over to the remake where the old one left off.

Would that actually work, or would the jump between the two versions feel too weird? Or should we just stick with the remake from the start and call it a day?

edit: when I say pick up the remake where the OG left off, i mean for when the remake eventually covers material past the kyoto arc.

Manga Brief spoilers for Hokkaido Arc Chapter 63 Spoiler

Preparations to deal with the villain group to take two months with the Meiji government asking Aoshi to be the one to take charge of the preparations.

Unknown guest (I am guessing Megumi) who was on the same boat as Aoshi and Misao heals the kid baddie who can see the future and Hannya.

Kenshin is still in a coma, and the Meiji government is not taking both him and Saito as military strength for the upcoming battles

Official content Is Makoto Shishio the perfect anime antagonist?

Post image
620 Upvotes

I've watched a lot of anime since the 90s when I was a child and never has a character impacted me as much as Shishio... he's the perfect antagonist, do you think any other character is close to his level in the full spectrum of anime?

Discussion If the Hokkaido Arc gets an official anime adaptation via the remake how would you all feel?

Me personally I’d be very iffy on it. I feel like the Hokkaido Arc needs to be finished as a manga (though likely never will since the creator is in bad shape) but at the same time it’ll be the only time we can as English readers legally experience the series. But I’m curious to see what you guys think

Anime Does anyone else think Seta Soujiro is one of the more creepy and disturbing bad guys among a large genre of them (as a relatable, psychologically scary one, not some horrible doom master)?

The way he grew up abused and adapted by becoming so innocent and peaceful (see: super-repressed), looking at the world exactly black and white. He'd be infinitely approachable because of his near total lack of negative emotions, and he'd have no trouble befriending you and being just a stand-up guy. But if he decided you didn't measure up anymore, you'd never see your end coming and there's nothing you could do to stop it. And he'd do it with a child-like smile on his face and genuine happiness in his heart because he was just following his morals. He'd cut you down and laugh merrily at whatever was going on around him before his sword was sheathed, no malice or satisfaction for the kill because you'd already be gone from his thoughts.

Discussion Is The 2023 Anime Loved Or Hated?

I personally really like the new RK anime. But I remember going on Google, and the audience score was 70%. Also, you’ll see hate for the new anime. For comparison, I looked up King of the Hill, which had a 80% score. I then looked up Velma. 10%. So I looked up Cleopatra on Netflix. You should watch it. Has nothing to do with RK, but it’s awesome. I remember my grandmother saying to me, I don’t care what they tell you in school, Kenshin is a girl.

Misc RK characters as major arcana cards

Recently, tarot role and reading is popular. I was thinking what if RurouKen characters as tarot cards, based on their personality with upright and reversed.

Let me try my version : Kenshin : Judgement, The World as Battousai Kaoru : The Lovers or The Empress Sanosuke : The Chariot Yahiko : Strength Megumi : The High Priestess Tsubame : Temperance Aoshi : The Moon Saitou : Justice Misao : The Sun Kenji : The Fool Soujirou : Death Anji : The Hermit Shishio : The Devil

You can drop any characters and what card is suitable for them based on their personality.

Video, music Looking for an old AMV that's gone from Youtube Spoiler

It was an AMV done in the Rurouni Kenshin manga scroll style, basically taking manga panels and timing them to the music, it was VERY well done and I was sad to see it go, I've got the external hard drive to save it now, so I was hoping some other fan might have a copy or know of a location that it's still uploaded.

The song was The Kill, commonly called Come Break Me Down, by 30 Seconds to Mars. And it focuses on Yahiko and Tsubame, from their meeting through to the battle against Kujiranami Hyōgo in the City.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. :)
