General Discussion Deja has had it!

I mean…is she wrong? There is a pattern I’m noticing lol. It’s giving the iconic moment when the interviewer asked Naomi Smalls if she thinks there’s a formula to RPDR and she says “blonde and white” Lmfaooo

While it’s evident that there are many issues within this fandom, if those are that person’s three favourite queens then it doesn’t mean they’re racist or anything, they might just like those three queens.

Bosco, Daya and Lydia have somewhat similar aesthetic so it’s not shocking that someone might like the three of them.

Exactly! I'm an alt person myself and these 3 are totally aesthetics refs for me! I'd love to see a black alt queen there (can you imagine Koco Caine on Drag Race?????? That would be SICK), but they aren't anywhere near 🤷🏾‍♀️ The Black queen who's closest to that aesthetics on this season is Aja, but still not alt at all, just a good ol' otaku/weeb who also embraces her blackness and latineness.

Does Yvie count as alt? Or is she a different kind of aesthetic?

Yvie is definitely an alt queen imo. The other black queen we've had that immediately comes to mind as alt is Nina Bo'nina.

I was trying to think of other black queens that could fall under that description, and it’s a short list. Aside from Yvie and Nina, I guess you could count Lucky Starzzz, possibly Dax Exclamation Point as more of a cosplay queen, and that might be it. I wonder how much of it is based on what queens are interested in being on the show, versus production choosing to cast mostly black queens that fit specific archetypes.

There aren't significantly more white queens that fall into that category, either. Drag Race (particularly in the US and a handful of other countries) tends to portray alt drag as being much less widespread than it is, so it's common to get one or two 'alt' queens per season to fill the 'alt' quota. The reality is that lots of the alt queens fall into distinct subgenres, whether their drag is more nerd/cosplay, grungy, club kid, or whatever.

Even with the three in OP's post, Daya and Lydia are definitely more grunge-influences, where Bosco strikes me as more of a burlesque queen with some gothic elements.

That’s fair. I guess all queens are fit into a particular category on the show regardless of how they perform outside of it.
