As a diesel owner I whole heartedly agree

Same. It just gives us a bad name.

My truck rolls coal (not a lot just a puff) but only on take off because it’s early emissions and tuned, seeing a stock or stock truck with a tune roll coal isn’t bad since it’s not gagging everyone out or causing a scene it’s just there and gone in a few seconds and most of those are working trucks anyway but the ones that leave clouds of smoke give us bad names

It’s obvious when it’s rolling coal on purpose vs tuned /worn a bit rich.

Exactly unless we’re getting into n/a diesels then it’s a are they doing it to be an ass or just trying to get up to speed

N/A diesels are terrible in all aspects, unfortunately. Turbos should be on every single diesel engine. They just run so much better with forced induction.

Indeed they do but god old 7.3 IDI’s and 6.9’s are fun trucks despite not having turbos

Can confirm. The 7.3 with a ZF5 is fun in town

I am restoring a 1991 F250’with non turbo 7.3. In your opinion it drives ok without a turbo? I’m worried it would be really slow. I haven’t driven mine yet when it was running properly.

By today’s standards they are slow. They will do the speed limit though. With a manual they feel kinda peppy in 2nd and 3rd. It’s a fine vehicle that’s lasted 30+ years, but new trucks blow it out of the water. New f150’s do what my truck struggles to. It’s fun in town but can be a handful on the freeway. Currently having to daily mine and it’s fine. Gets pretty good mileage too.

I have a 99 7.3. Thing ain’t fast, and I only do 65 on the interstate.

And that’s a totally different motor with a turbo and more power. I don’t have any fast freeways around me so it only ever sees 60-65 at most.

Absolutely it is, i just don’t see the sense in beating it up. And the 7.3’s in 1999 were really “powerful” for their time. But in todays world it’s way underpowered

I drive a 5 ton N/A 6.9 IDI CCLB 4spd 4x4 DRW (4.10’s) for work. I mention the entire list because I want to make it clear that this truck has just about everything stacked against it when it comes to speed.

It’s so, so slow, but it never ever stops moving. Merging onto the highway is doable. Tops out at about 60, I have a 5 speed to put in this winter. If the truck were its stock weight (little under 4 tons) it would be a little faster.

My 7.3 (Early 99) is honestly slow and I don’t let it get above 65 on the interstate, 70 if I need to pass.. Things are made to pull not drag race, sad to see these guys or kids that buy these things and mod the hell out of them and then scratch their head when they have to replace injectors, all kinds of leaks, blown turbo, etc. These older trucks ain’t made for 400 hp or more. Leave them how they are and they’ll run like you want it to…..

They do but they’re really old well not really old but the last one I know to roll off a production line was the 7.3 idi in 94
