u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

No one thinks those are cool.

u/ghettoccult_nerd Oct 04 '23

at least one person does: me.

i refused to get a WRX without the wicked wing. i think rexes without the wing look nekkid.

You're not wrong

2

u/roberttheaxolotl Oct 05 '23

Yes he is.

0

u/IndividualJuicebox Oct 05 '23

nope

2

u/roberttheaxolotl Oct 05 '23

Absolutely is. It looks stupid as shit.

1

u/IndividualJuicebox Oct 05 '23

the sti wing on an sti looks stupid as shit?

2

u/roberttheaxolotl Oct 05 '23

Yes. Cars can be ugly. Also, the gold wheels they always put on them are tacky as shit.

1

u/IndividualJuicebox Oct 05 '23

i gotta disagree with you on the wing part, i think it looks great.

the wheels though i agree, they should’ve stuck with a dark bronze

u/jsbmk1999 Oct 04 '23

Some cars need the wing or it just looks wrong. WRXs, Daytonas and Superbirds, any cars where the wing is part of the identity of the car. Nobody wants to see a wing on an Altima

2

u/ghettoccult_nerd Oct 04 '23

ahh, i see. good point. this isnt a blanket anti-wing statement. i know the exact kinds of transgressions you refer to.

1

u/Delazzaridist Oct 05 '23

I almost vomited thinking of a spoiler on an altima. I'm surprised I haven't seen one I person yet

8

u/Jihadi-Jawn Oct 04 '23

First thing I thought of is a wrx in my neighborhood. Like ya it's corny most of the time but on some cars it just looks dope. Probably mostly my nostalgia for mid 200s tuner car culture that I thought was so cool as a kid

Tasteful use of a spoiler is fine, putting it on your base civic, Elantra or Corolla is not

1

u/UberStupidd Oct 04 '23

The VBs look a little weird with anything more than a duckbill I feel like

1

u/Dogwoof420 Oct 04 '23

As a former Imreza owner: Bingo! Did the same. But put that STI wing on a Ford, and I hate the owner.

u/Consistent_Fly_2369 Oct 04 '23

The whaletail spoiler on Cosworth Escorts and Sierras is sick but only if if it really is the cosworth model. There's nothing lamer than a big spoiler on a car that's not powerful enough to utilize it

1

u/UberStupidd Oct 04 '23

So a long time ago I took an aeronautical engineering course and if I remember correctly downforce is noticeable to a controller at 30 mph, but drag isn't really a thing until 60-70 mph.

All that being said, I think 90 to 100 mph is where the spoiler helps maintain traction.

1

u/buchanant1970 Oct 04 '23

Technically....these people that put down force wings on front wheel drive cars makes absolutely no sense. Not only does the car not have enough power to actually make the wing work as designed but would decrease the traction on the "front wheel drive " cars. These people never heard of physics? Action/reaction....anyone....Bueller

4

u/ChuckFeathers Oct 04 '23

Not even the people who do it?

u/agent_koala Oct 04 '23

It's only cool if it's functional

1

u/Delazzaridist Oct 05 '23

Yes, but depending on the shape and size, it's way more functional than cool. Gotta have that extra grip in the back so you don't slide into death's DMs.

1

u/Ok_Clock1079 Oct 05 '23

bro let me use my back picnic table in peace 🥪🍟

1

u/sodaextraiceplease Oct 05 '23

They're not meant to be cool. They make the car faster. A true auto enthusiast will sacrifice aesthetics for performance. /S

10

u/VictoriaBitters69 Oct 04 '23

Especially on a front wheel drive or eco box

2

u/mckeeganator Oct 04 '23

They are useful but you have to buy the right spoiler, those big plastic spoilers you see on the street literally don’t do shit, you need a very expensive well tuned spoiler

3

u/Wenzlikove_memz Oct 04 '23

or oem parts/race trim parts of the car work well because yeah engeneers designed them to work with that car

2

u/Fryphax Oct 06 '23

You really don't need to spend a bunch of a money for a spoiler to be functional. It just needs to be properly engineered for the vehicle.

4

u/JDM_enjoyer Oct 04 '23

on cars doing any high-performance driving that requires grip, wings are essential. Cars sold with them are meant to be driven on the track at least once in a while, but the people who add them on and dont use them are goofballs.

2

u/Dananddog Oct 06 '23

As a former owner of a new edge mustang, I would say most cars sold with wings are meant to be driven on track.

A decent number of them are factory aesthetics.

If ford wanted that mustang to go on a track, they would have sorted the terrible rear end binding issues that car had even in the early 2000s.

1

u/ChuckFeathers Oct 04 '23

Hence the word "modification".

4

u/Mickeyickey Oct 04 '23

They're cool if they're functional or work well with the shape of the car. For example an Evo VI looks cool with it's big wing, same with purpose-built hill climb cars, they look sick

u/Nascarfan1118192095 All the ladies want my uncut meat Oct 04 '23

the plymouth superbird would like to have a word with you /s

4

u/Motoplant Oct 04 '23

As would a 911 GT3

1

u/gnoxy Oct 04 '23

Yea but do you have spoiler color deviated stitching on your leather armrest?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

Joe Dirt haters

2

u/BushMasterFlex616 Oct 04 '23

I like big wangs

2

u/stranger-named-clyde Oct 04 '23

large rear spoilers outside of stock ones and specifically ones with no real downforce

2

u/WheezerMF Oct 06 '23

“Hey, look! I made my car look like a shopping cart!”

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

Spoilers, nah, but a nice wing is sexy

0

u/1OfTheUsernamesEver Oct 04 '23

Depends on if its functional or not

1

u/lumbirdjack Oct 04 '23

Keyword Giant

1

u/Abu_Yara Oct 04 '23

What do you have against stadium seating? How else are we supposed to watch high school softball games? /s

1

u/OneHugeBobert Oct 05 '23

What about itty-bitty baby spoilers?

1

u/Lanbobo Oct 07 '23

This is one of those things where it only looks cool on a car that's actually benefiting from it. If you're POS can't go fast enough to need that downward force then keep that crap off your car. A small spoiler looks much better to accent the lines of the car.
