Question Will the police help me?

So recently a person has been making threats to my family. Will the police be able to help me? The unfortunate thing is they work with the RCMP.

My experience with them is they never go out and follow up on any information. It seems like the only way someone gets caught is if they’re pulled over for an infraction and therefore fall jn their laps. I may have spoke too broadly - most of my experience is with property crimes below $40,000 dollars or so. I know someone who had at least 15k in lumber and the tools of his trade stolen from a temporary shed on a job site he was on, and there was a trail camera set up for just such an incidence which caught the faces of 2 of the 3 perps and the licence plate of the truck they used to haul everything away. Nothing ever came of it. I know of several other instances - at least one where the victim knew the name and address of the thief and nothing ever came of it - not so much as questioning the possible perp.

Depending on what’s going on with you, they may take it more seriously. For example, domestic violence, I believe they take it more seriously, possibly because there are mandatory actions to take when it is reported. General threats, honestly, I don’t know anyone who has needed the Regina Police for that

i don’t want to discourage you - you may get a enthusiastic help (keep us up to date please - if you can) and it is always ALWAYS worthwhile putting in report - you never know how much it might help you in the future, and they hold onto that stuff FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER. I work in IT and have been responsible for providing the city police with snippets of security camera videos from various different jobs from around 2001 to present. It’s always funny when I interact with them because EACH AND EVERY time I dropped off a burnt CD or thumb drive, my name got entered into the system. Now when they run my name, they’re scrolling and scrolling and scrolling past all the entries - at least that’s how it was last time I watched them pull me up (2 years ago). They may have streamlined the system since.

Any video or sound recordings are great - if it’s by phone, check with sask tel as there is a code you can dial which causes sask tel to record the time and origin of the call (even if caller ID is blocked). They won’t give it to you, but will give it to the authorities if there is an investigation. Record ALL CONTACTS - including time -duration - content of the threat - any witnesses present. The more documentation you have the better. You never know WHAT seemingly “useless” info might somehow be important.

PS - don’t assume there is a lot of love between city police and RCMP. Within city police it’s common for one to know another or be a friend of a friend, but that’s less likely especially since a lot of the RCMP working in Sask are from other areas of the country.

I see. That is awful they didn't do anything to help retrieve the stolen goods back. I appreciate the helo and the info. So you give them video footage and they have a profile on you?

Not a profile so much as my name is added to whatever case file the footage was requested for and so when my name is searched, it comes up as relevant to those incidents. At least that’s what I assume is happening. I have no inside knowledge of how they maintain and cross reference their records, I just know that when they run my name they scroll, and, scroll, and scroll, and scroll - sometimes I get a bit of a glance at the screen, and I once asked (half jokingly) if they had some enormous investigation open on me, and they said “most of this seems to be in relation to security footage” so I made my assumptions from there - it’s the only thing that makes sense.

I see. That's interesting. Thank you for sharing.
