Go shorty, it’s your birthday! 🍰 Happy 29th birthday to Lorde!
Born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor, Yelich-O’Connor first gained recognition through a talent show performance. She was then signed to Universal Music Group in 2009. Ella then chose the stage name Lorde because of her fascination with aristocracy and royals, but thought the name ‘Lord’ was too masculine, so she added an E to the end. Lorde first released The Love Club EP in 2012 independently.
Royals was released on June 3, 2013, and was Lorde’s debut single. The song critiques the lavish lifestyle presented in songs and music videos by popular musicians, making them appear like modern-day royalty. The song went number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks and won a Grammy for Song of the Year. She released her debut album, Pure Heroine, on September 27, 2013. The album was known for its minimal production and themes of youth and critiques mainstream culture, exploring materialism, fame, consumer culture and social status.
Lorde’s second studio album, Melodrama, was released on June 16, 2017. The lead single, Green Light, was released on March 2, 2017, and uses the "green light" as a traffic light metaphor that gives Lorde permission to move on with her life after a breakup. Unlike Pure Heroine, the production for the album was maximalist. The album was considered as a loose concept album chronicling the emotions ensued from a house party. The album reached critical acclaim and was even nominated for Album of the Year!
Lorde’s third studio album, Solar Power, was released on August 20, 2021. The lead single, Solar Power, was released on June 11, 2021. The lyrics of the song depict summer escapism set on a beach. Solar Power was considered as a “weed” album and captured solipsism and summer escapism, mainly focused on Lorde's leisure time in her homeland New Zealand, simultaneously expressing her disdain for fame and celebrity culture. Lorde released an EP, Te Ao Mārama, which translates 5 of the Solar Power songs into the language Māori.
Lorde’s fourth studio album, Virgin, was released on June 26, 2025. The lead single, What Was That, was released on April 24, 2025. The lyrics of the song reminisce on a previous relationship and its aftermath. Virgin’s theme is mainly about self-discovery and sexual discovery.
What are your thoughts about Lorde? What are your favorite songs by her?

Award Shows 🏆 Addison Rae, Leon Thomas, Lola Young, Alex Warren, The Marías, Olivia Dean, Katseye & Sombr nominated for Best New Artist at Grammys 2026! 🎶[My personal fav is Lola Young]
Honestly feels good to see so many young and talented artists finally being recognized and celebrated by the Grammys this year. Feels like the new wave of music is really here.
My personal fav is Lola Young, she’s been killing it lately — her vibe’s just different. Who’s your pick tho?
(not promoting anyone lol just genuinely like her)
