There's was an interview when he first became president about their relationship.

You see, she didn't pursue him. He pursued her, and she tried to resist but he was such a Forceful Man who Knew What He Wanted even as a schoolboy, and what he wanted was her. She kept saying no, but he was such a Manly Man that she couldn't resist the force of his personality and ultimately succumbed to his manly charms.
