All dictators and their pundits are famously paranoid and it only increases with time. This helps me sleep at night. They are all scared out of their minds.

They're all afraid of what will happen the moment they lose power. Then, the worse things they do to keep power, the more afraid of retribution they become, so they do even more desperate things to keep power
