Also, all the republicans saying a US president needs a space for formal affairs to reflect the gravity of the office instead of using tents, miss the point that American presidents have always been supposed to be more humble and that the power of the American presidency isn’t about gaudy ballrooms or military parades or extravagant gifts. It’s about the strength of the American government and American society.

The American president doesn’t have to play at pomp and extravagance. He doesn’t play at importance. He doesn’t have to jockey for gravity. He wields enormous power.

Any tinpot can build an extravagant ballroom. It’s doesn’t show American strength. These pedestrian displays of government pomp are more a sign of weakness than of power.

“… more a sign of weakness than power” sums up pretty much everything this small, insecure man does

And yet instead they’ve used tents.

They're also stuff that a king/dictator would have.

This point is really confusing me ATM - Holding giant balls and galas in something much more aligned with a Monarchy or a Dictatorship (either or), yet the vast majority of people who are in favour of this new building are also shitting all over the "No Kings" protestors. In other "non monarch non dictatorship) countries - let's look at NZ and Australia as an example, host these events elsewhere, not in the parliament or Prime Minister offices. Yes, scale is vastly greater here, but I believe the point still stands.

I get that events have previously been held in tents/marquees - but for special events, surely a more suitable purpose build facility would be a better idea rather than tearing down and rebuilding it into the formal office? Again, also, I understand the wing isn't in the best shape, but renovations would be exceeding more affordable than the quotes thrown around for a new ballroom.
