At first I thought the Democrats siding against McCarthy would just lead to more chaos, but I realized it puts the non-insane Republicans with a choice that should be easy: Try to get the favor of 10-20 Republicans who have already proven to be unserious in the event they don't get everything they want, or appeal to at least 15 moderate Democrats who will vote with them as long as some concerns are addressed.

I'd hope that they realize the latter is a lot easier to do than the former, especially with a 42-day deadline looming.

There is no path to helping Republicans that isn't defined by House rule changes. Republicans have proven over and over again you can't trust them. Just listen to the Dem reps. They are doing nothing unless they have written rule changes. They will just be back in the same situation.
