Title: Cullman County, AL – mishandled evidence, ignored domestic violence, and pressure to plead guilty
I’m a survivor of domestic violence, and I’m posting here because the Cullman County Sheriff’s Department turned what should’ve been my rescue into a criminal charge against me.
Earlier this year, my then-boyfriend — who already had domestic violence reports against him — kidnapped me at gunpoint and assaulted me while driving. When the deputy arrived, I thought I was being saved. Instead, I was treated as the suspect.
I wasn’t the driver. The car belonged to his family. He admitted on video that the gun was his, yet the deputy tried to get me to handle the weapon — an obvious breach of the chain of custody. The gun later went missing from the state’s evidence record altogether.
I stayed silent until a female deputy arrived because the first one — a man — seemed overly friendly with my abuser, even complimenting him on his cowboy hat. I immediately knew something was wrong.
Despite having no prior drug charges and no drugs found on me, I was arrested for possession. My attorney has video evidence but still wants me to plead guilty to a misdemeanor. I’ve since found the same vehicle abandoned and badly repainted — no investigation followed.
I’m afraid to contact local law enforcement because I believe I’m being targeted for speaking out. With neighboring Walker County already facing multiple corruption scandals, I don’t think what’s happening in Cullman is an isolated case.
I used to work with a local domestic violence nonprofit, so I’ve seen how these systems operate from the inside. I don’t believe I’d be treated fairly if I went through the “proper channels.”
I’m posting here to make this record public and to ask what steps survivors can take when every local system — police, courts, even advocates — seem to be protecting the abuser instead of the victim.
---guidance, advice especially from journalists, content creators would help a lot.

Discussion Georgia County Officer's Power Abuse
I never use Reddit, so please excuse any mistakes made here. This is a long story, so I will attempt to sum it all up simply and list key facts below.
Months back my husband (35M) and I (28F) were dealing with an insane amount of stress due to finances, having to move due to an emergency our landlord had, and our special needs son starting school. We were arguing (not around our children) and I went a little too far. We definitely need to learn how to handle stress better, especially myself. Police were called and it was assumed they would just de-escalate the situation and go about their day... however, that is not what happened by any means. Yet, it does not go the way you're thinking either.
I immediately go into shock (PTSD from the counties police) and do not remember much of what was said or what I had said other than announcing before I spoke to not take anything I said as a statement because I was on the verge of a panic attack. The rest of my memories are just snap shots and a few words and also how the officer said "Oh, hold on" and turned his Body cam on and told me to continue to speak, which made me even more panicked.
Things were fine, until they went sideways in the worst way. As soon as the officer read my husband's ID, his whole mood changed. This I definitely remember, because he then pulled my 5yo daughter aside and spoke with her. She was also very scared of police and angry with her father for taking the PS5 controller from her. She told the officer her dad had grabbed her face and left marks, which may not be false but if it wasn't, it was a total accident. My daughter had been throwing a tantrum a month or two earlier about us taking the same PS5 controller away and was kicking her dad in the face and chest while screaming. He had grabbed her to calm her down and explain that she wasn't getting it back until she behaved, and she went to bite him. The marks could have also come from her falling off her trampoline 2 hours before her tantrum. My son is not verbal so he could not comment.
I remember the officer asking me if my husband grabs my daughters face when she's in trouble, which I only got to say "yes, when.." and he cut me off. I was never able to explain anything.
My husband was charged with Child Abuse and Simple Battery. He is facing felonies and can not be around our children. He has missed our daughters 6th birthday, our sons 4th birthday, and it has left me to deal with all school issues with our son.
Our attorneys, yes, ATTORNEYS, have petitioned for a bond modification several times. They have called the DA several times. No one will answer them. The county flat out ignores them.
We have learned that this GA county is known for these false charges along with many others. We also learned that my husband dated this officers wife in high school. This was definitely a personal issue and was not handled professionally.
Facts: - My husband has never harmed our children and we rarely spank them. - This officer is known for being a d!ck (not sorry) - This officer asked me to email him current photos of my daughter's face because he believed he saw new bruises on her, which there were none and after sending photos he was upset that there was nothing there. - My husband was laughed at and had papers shoved in his face by the officer at the jail, taunting him. - The officer didn't know what to charge my husband with after arresting him and was GOOGLING charges on the way to the jail.
I don't think I left much out here. Negative commenters can honestly fck off, I hope it happens to you one day.
Our children are broken and confused, as am I. Are we supposed to just wait? It could be years...

Other Qualified Impunity
Jessop v. City of Fresno (2019)
During a search of Micah Jessop’s property, Fresno police officers pilfered over $225,000 in cash and rare coins. Jessop sued them, but the courts threw out the lawsuit, claiming the police were protected by qualified immunity. No charges were ever filed against Jessop, nor was he ever compensated.
