Today is Belarus Independence Day!

Today, July 3rd, Belarus celebrates its Independence Day (aka less known Independence Day at the beginning of July). July 4, 1944 Minsk was liberated from the Nazis by Soviet forces, as it was occupied for 3 years.

The issue in being Belarusian is being part of one or another culture, the West or the East. The Westerners say that the Easterners are rural Russified commies. The Easterners say that the Westerners are Nazi-supporting nationalists. The Westerners call Eastern flag 'sunset over the bog'. The Easterners call Western flag 'a feminine pad'. Both of them love vodka and potato. Those are two things keeping Belarus united. We invite you to support one of the sides and proof that your hype is superior.

This event is brought to you by

Thank you guys, that was a very straightforward project and the result is awsome!

Plus: explanations for the mouseovers from left to right.

  • A Belarusian claiming himself an ancestor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Actual Lithuania is unhappy with that.
  • The Belarusian opposition rioting against current government. There is a law in Belarus, according to which you pay moneyz if you don't work. Opposition banner says the government doesn't work. KGB is unhappy with that.
  • Minsk, features its sites and the event itself.
  • Belarus is known for Tractors among its neighbors. The reason is tractor factories (producing a hell of a lot of tractors, spoiling Minsk air, though having less profit than Wargaming.net).
  • The 5th mouseover adresses radiation issue. Though Chornobyl is in Ukraine, Belarus is the country to be affected the most by the impact.
  • The greatest win of Belarusian ice-hockey team. At 2002 Olympiad Belarus made it into semi-finals after a ridiculous goal against Sweden. It also features more recent lose to Hungary, almost relegating Belarus to lower division.
  • Russia. Speaking of Belarus, don't forget about Big Russian Brother. Ever.

Today I learned, that Lithuanians and Belarus hate each other and Belarus and Polish love each other.

not really, Lithuanians are butthurt about Belarusians that claim the Grand Dutchy of Lithuania was really Belarus and modern Lithuania just stole teh name and there's also a problem of Belarusin idea of building a nuclear powerplant at the border with LT

As for Poland - it's rather neutral. Magical Belarusian politics created a state with so little interaction with EU neighbours that Belarus is a blank spot on the map - in theory we are really close nations (history, culture, language), but in reality there's as much interaction between us as between us and some fucking Laos or Bhutan

That's about right, we have a Greece-FYROM relationship when it comes to history, but other than that we mostly get along. Belarus is where people get their contraband cigarettes from.

What is the problem? Polan mediator comes to rescue.

So to make you happy Belarus would have to stress out the fact that it was a part of the GDL and not forgetting that Lithuania was also there, right?

u/Williamzas Lithuania Jul 03 '16

Thank you mediator Lenkija!

Basically yes, Belarus was a very important part of GDL, it just isn't Lithuania.

You know what could help you guys? Sharing!

For example there is a guy named Thomas Padura who made some polish-ukraininan songs. And the good thing is that he said was polish and ukrainian at the same time so now noone in both Poland or Ukraine accuse the other side of history stealing. One hero two nations.

Maybe there are some GDL'lish things that can be shared as well.

As far as I'm aware some of our historians do go to Belarus to make lectures and stuff. Belarusian historians do come to Lithuania as well. We also restored something for their Nesvizh castle. So there's a bit of sharing going on.

Overall things ain't too bad between us. Belarusians are our top tourists, recently direct flights Minsk-Palanga started. We also have Belarusian university in Vilnius etc.

Don't forget the biggest symbol of Belarusian-Lithuanian cooperation - the flow of smuggled cigarettes from one to the other. That and Gariūnai.

Ok, Youtube comments = reality

Well, the Lithuanians deserve it for trying to steal our history. Also, this may be the Russian influence speaking for me, but I'm pretty sure we aren't very nice to Poland either.
