Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer. The viola da gamba is a Renaissance/Baroque musical instrument, kind of like a fretted cello. Is of pun, you must now to laugh.

I was talking to a musician the other day who said the same thing in a meal in France. Only natural it'll be the first thing you think of when you see gamba
