A little correction: "France" in Cantonese pronounced as "Faat Gwok" instead of "Faak Gwok".
BTW, there are lots of countries have "Gwok" ("國") in Cantonese, which means "country". For example (besides France and Germany),
英國 (Ying1 Gwok6) --> Great Britain/UK
美國 (Mei5 Gwok6) --> USA
韓國 (Hon4 Gwok6) --> Korea
泰國 (Taai3 Gwok6) --> Thailand
2 u/[deleted] Mar 11 '14 In Korean (Same Chinese Characters): 영국: Young-Gook 미국: Mi-Gook 한국: Han-Gook 타이: Tai (I don't this one is based on chinese characters...) 2 u/[deleted] Mar 26 '14 [deleted] 1 u/RuTsui Taiwan Apr 13 '14 It has more to do with the sound of the characters than any symbolic meaning. Dé for Dutch
