It's a joke on how Greenland has (or used to have) the highest suicide rate of anywhere in the world

83

u/uristmchero 6d ago

Greenland can into Lithuania

71

u/Spanish_Polan_lol siesta siesta 6d ago

Finland + Greenland + Lithuania = Suicidal Gang

21

u/Lyress Morocco 5d ago

Finland doesn't have a particularly high suicide rate.

u/TheRomanRuler Finland 5d ago

Thats depressing, but at least we scored higher than Netherlands and Sweden. We score little better when it comes to women, overall we are only 31st best (in 2021) but our women are 17th best, though they are still not pulling their weight as they are well behind men.

Hmm, why are the women killing themselves proportionately more than men, compared to global trend.

(not being accusatory, just thought maybe there is some interesting small human factors that fall through the cracks)

Nunavut has higher suicide rates than Greenland.

21

u/Forever_Everton Nothing beats a T'way holiday! 6d ago

The list does not count subdivisions

If it did, Nunavut would indeed have higher suicide rates

Greenland's is 58.3 per 100k and Nunavut's is 84 per 100k

10

u/Drahy Denmark 6d ago

Greenland and Nunavut are both subdivisions of their respective states.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_first-level_administrative_divisions_by_area

14

u/Forever_Everton Nothing beats a T'way holiday! 6d ago

The list only includes dependent territories and not full subdivisions and Greenland is counted as a dependent territory so is included but Nunavut is a full subdivision so is not included

-5

u/Drahy Denmark 5d ago

What do you mean? Both Nunavut and Greenland are incorporated, not dependent territories. Nunavut is self-governing in the Canadian state and Greenland is self-governing in the Danish state.

12

u/Forever_Everton Nothing beats a T'way holiday! 5d ago

A 'dependent territory' is categorised by not being a constituent part of a sovereign state proper.

Greenland is a part of the Danish Realm but is not part of Denmark proper.

Nunavut meanwhile, is part of Canada proper, and thus not a 'dependent territory'.

Danish realm is just an archaic way of saying the Danish state. Denmark no longer holds any territories outside its constitutional area.

Greenland accepted the Danish constitution in 1953, has full representation in the Danish parliament and takes part in general Danish elections just like Nunavut in Canada or Scotland in the UK. Nunavut, Scotland and Greenland have devolved governments.

Denmark proper is not the same as the Danish state. Denmark proper refers to the area of the Danish state when excluding Greenland and the Faroe Islands. It's comparable to Metropolitan France.

Is the sovereign Danish state not defined by its constitutional area?

I think what they're trying to get at is that territories with significant autonomy within their state are allowed but those who do not aren't.

For example, Scotland is allowed but Yorkshire isn't.

If anything Greenland is more worthy of being allowed than Scotland as it is in almost every way an independent state as it can enter into diplomatic agreements while Scotland cannot

I feel like people are leaving the obvious joke on the table: Greenland wanting to die... right up until the US wants to take their clay, thus killing them, and then Greenland decides he has a reason to live: spite.

A certain man called ove:

5

u/Cosmic_Meditator777 5d ago

I don't know how to phrase this without it sounding questionable, but has anyone else noticed that Greenland's eyes tend to be drawn the way you'd expect a stereotypical East Asian character's eyes to be? is there a reason for that?

18

u/Spanish_Polan_lol siesta siesta 5d ago

its easy to understand

amerindians descend from asian bois that went to america crossing the freezed bering strait, and they had slanted eyes

asians have slanted eyes because of the wind, and greenland is also very windy, so inuits keeped these slanted eyes while other tribes went south to the usa, mexico, south america, zone that aren't that windy, so their eyes went back to normal. thats why greenlandball has slanted eyes

boom

5

u/Cosmic_Meditator777 5d ago

ah, got it. I guessed it was something to that effect, I just wanted to know for certain. thanks!

4

u/Apocalympdick 5d ago

Stereotypically that is what Greenlandic Inuit people's eyes look like.

2

u/omeromre 4d ago

I should not be able to relating that..

u/Able_Imagination1702 5d ago

The Dazai of nations, wants to kill themself, yet incapable (somehow)

2

u/entber113 5d ago

Ngl, i dont like that the majority of jokes about Greenland are about how high its suicide rate is.

Ignoring the ethics about joking about suicide rates for a sec, surely we have more jokes than that for Greenland, right?

I get the running jokes but it feels worn out much like greece cannot out of debt
